Calendar Girl and Fat Poets: Dr. Deah Interviews Frannie Zellman ...

Trigger warning: Discussion of eating disorders.

Sometimes I get irritated with all of the special focus days/weeks/months that inundate my calendar. I?ve written about this before in posts about Love Your Body Day, International No Diet Day, and Fat Talk Free Week, etc. I think the source of my irritation comes from wishing there was no need to continue to wipe out eating disorders (EDs), fight for a cure for breast cancer, or acknowledge that people have the right to be whatever size they are without being bullied and stigmatized.? In a perfect world the celebrations on the calendar would not need to be reminders to fight the fight; but I understand the need to call attention to certain causes and if the increase of these days/weeks/and months is any indication of progress, then we are making a great deal of progress.

So in the interest of keeping you all up to date on upcoming dates I?d like to share the following thoughts with you.

Francie Berg: Healthy Weight Week

Francie Berg: Healthy Weight Week

January 20-26 was the 20th anniversary of?Healthy Weight Week. While there have been some issues by some folks about the name of the week because it sounds as if the focus is still weight-centric, when Healthy Weight Week was first established, it was a radical concept to reject dieting and accept the notion that people of different sizes and different weights could still be healthy. I had the pleasure of interviewing Francie Berg, the Chairwoman of Healthy Weight Week and author of Women Afraid to Eat. She shared some thoughts about what has evolved over the past 20 years.

If you would like to read that interview, click here.

February is Eating Disorders Awareness Month with February 24 through March 2 being National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. NEDAwareness Week now has its own website to make finding resources, activity guides, events and more, easier than ever! Visit to see how you can be a part of the largest outreach effort on EDs in the nation.

The increase of EDs among men is unfortunately increasing rapidly in our country. The National Association for Males with Eating Disorders (NAMED) is conducting a college campaign, in which fliers and brochures will be distributed to colleges to encourage male students with eating disorders to seek treatment, and promote NAMED as a resource. To sign up your college or make a donation toward this project, email Chris@NAMEDinc.org.??

Judy Freed, Food Fight

Judy Freed, Food Fight

If you are fortunate enough to live in the Philadelphia area, you may want to get tickets to for? FOOD FIGHT: A Solo Performance About Eating Disorders written and performed by Judy Freed. As a psychotherapist and performance artist, Freed takes the audience on a deeply personal journey of recovery, followed by a post-performance discussion. A portion of every ticket sold will go directly to the American Anorexia and Bulimia Association (AABA) of Philadelphia the Moving Creations, Inc. project Girls on the Move at Germantown High School. The show is on February 2, 2013 at 5:00 p.m.

There is an indisputable connection between fat stigma, size discrimination, and the development of EDs. Most people who have an eating disorder started off by engaging in some form of dieting in order to shape their bodies into a smaller version to conform to the belief that thinner is better, healthier, more beautiful.

One way that I will be acknowledging Eating Disorders Awareness Month is on February 13, at Pegasus Bookstore in Berkeley, California. Please join me and other contributing authors at?7 p.m. at 2349 Shattuck Avenue as we read our pieces from?Virgie Tovar?s new anthology, Hot & Heavy:? Fierce Fat Girls on Life, Love and Fashion. It seems perfectly congruent that the contributing authors will be reading about making peace with their bodies during NEDA month. To read more about the book click here.

And speaking of books, there is a new book coming out later this year called Fat Poets Speak II, edited by Frannie Zellman. I am honored to have one of my pieces included in this book and will share it at the end of this blog post. But more importantly, I had the opportunity to interview Ms. Zellman, who is also the author of FatLand, a novel published by Pearlsong Press, about the upcoming book.

Fat Poets Speak I

Fat Poets Speak I

Dr. Deah:? How did you first become involved in the Fat Acceptance movement?

Frannie Z:? I was always heavy, and yet I could walk my slimmer friends into the ground. I was also the most athletic of them. Somehow it always seemed off-kilter and at least faintly wrong when the doctors would tell me that I had to lose weight. And yet I tried, in several attempts, which always ended the same way?? with my gaining everything back that I lost on diets, and then some.

From a social justice and humanitarian standpoint, it seemed bizarre that fat people were treated unjustly and unequally and not given the same opportunities and medical care as slimmer people. As the daughter and granddaughter of Socialists (with a capital ?S?), I came from a family in which social justice issues were discussed at the dinner table nightly. And from a feminist perspective, it seemed highly suspicious that fat people, but especially fat women, were being told to starve themselves in the hopes that we would appear smaller and daintier than men.

My questions and suspicions found some answers in?Fat Pride by Marvin Groswirth (1971), although the book was less than generous to women in several sections. Making Peace with Food by Susan Kano (1989) nudged me further in the direction of Fat Acceptance. But it wasn?t until I happened to view an issue of Radiance? magazinie online (1998) that my confidence and belief in Fat Acceptance began to soar. Upon reading the poems in the first issue I viewed, I said two things to myself: a) these women believe as I do and b) I want to write poems that speak to Fat Acceptance and then, liberation.

That of course was another issue. As a poet, I?d felt all my life that my poems were somehow vaguely off-center, that I wasn?t speaking or writing from the heart, from the core of myself. When I read the poems in Radiance, I knew that what I needed to do was to write about myself as what I was and am?? a fat and proud woman. And that, more than anything else, sealed my identification as a Fat Acceptance believer.

Dr. Deah: ? How did you become involved with the Fat Poets? Society and become the editor of the anthologies Fat Poets Speak I and II?

Frannie Z:? In 2006, upon seeing the call for workshops and workshop leaders in National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA) online, I proposed a workshop in writing Fat Acceptance and liberation poetry with an emphasis on writing joyfully using images of ourselves as fat women. I think it was called ?Singing the Fat Self.? I was then duly asked if I wished to lead the workshop. I said that I would. After all, I thought, besides everything else, it would be a chance to use the skills garnered from my master?s in creative writing, and justify the hopes, such as they were, that my creative writing professors had once had in me.

At the 2006 convention, I met the poets in my workshop who would furnish the core of the Fat Poets? Society: Kathy Barron, Anne Kaplan, Corinna Makris, Lesleigh Owen (now Dr. Lesleigh Owen),? and Mary Worley, already a prominent figure in Fat Acceptance. We decided that we should start a Fat Poets? Society with the goal of producing a volume of poetry to be published. Although Mary had training in editing ? that?s what she does?? she felt that I would be more qualified, since my area was after all creative writing/poetry. So I edited, and contributed to, Fat Poets Speak: Voices of the Fat Poets? Society, the first volume of Fat Poets Speak. We met online through email. We then migrated to Facebook as we all established accounts there.

At the same time, I was writing what would turn out to be FatLand, my novel of a society and territory which has as its reason for existence the rights and equality of fat people. I first wrote it in installments in Marilyn Wann?s blog, just for fun. When I showed the results to a good friend of mine, who is also into Fat Acceptance, she said that she thought I should publish it. Pearlsong Press was the natural and inspiring choice for me and for the Fat Poets? Society, as well. CEO Peggy Elam is preeminent in publishing works that emphasize Fat Acceptance, and I knew that she would understand the objectives of the novel and of the Fat Poets anthology.

FatLand: A Novel and the first volume of Fat Poets Speak were both published in 2009.

Frannie Zellman, Editor Fat Poets Speak and Author Fatland

Frannie Zellman, Editor Fat Poets Speak and Author FatLand

Dr. Deah:? What made you decide to publish a second volume of Fat Poets Speak at this point?

Frannie Z:? Although we published the first volume in 2009, the poets involved in the Fat Poets? Society didn?t stop writing. Eileen Rosensteel, who had not been able to attend the workshop I gave in 2006, did indeed manage to get to the NAAFA Convention in 2007, when I didn?t, and attend a poetry writing workshop then. When I read her work, I was thrilled.

The Fat Poets? Society kept meeting online. I gave a workshop in writing fat fiction at the NAAFA Convention in 2008, while Dr. Lesleigh Owen, a ?charter? member of the Fat Poets? Society and a prolific contributor to the first volume of Fat Poets Speak, gave the workshop in writing fat poetry. Although we did give a workshop in writing Fat Poetry in 2009 at the Convention in Washington, DC, what I can only describe as life circumstances came into play then, and I was not able to attend any NAAFA Conventions afterward.

The circumstances which caused me not to be able to attend NAAFA Conventions in the three years after?? 2010-2012?? also impacted my writing and facilitation of the Fat Poets? Society. They started to ease in 2012. As I finally finished writing the second volume of FatLand, entitled FatLand; The Early Days, it was natural for me to start writing and giving more attention to poetry again, as well. And I knew that the poets involved in the Fat Poets? Society were still writing and would welcome an outlet for their poems. That was when I proposed to Peggy Elam at Pearlsong Press that a second volume of poems be published.

Fat Poets Speak II?? we have yet to finalize the complete title?? is slated to be published late in 2013.

Dr. Deah:? What changes have you seen in the societal attitudes towards fat people/size diversity in the time that has passed since the first book was published?

Frannie Z:? It seems to me that society in the USA has polarized so much more around the question of fat/size diversity and acceptance since 2009. There are more people who now accept or actively support the idea of Fat Acceptance, but there are also more people who are against it. There have been many wonderful books and anthologies that have come out in that period of time, including the Fat Studies Reader (ed. Esther Rothblum), with the entire field of Fat Studies now accepted as a scholarly area and pursuit. Fat fiction has burgeoned (have to give a shout out to my own favorite fat mystery books, by Lynne Murray, including (yum!) The Falstaff Vampire Files). The more books and writings on being fat and Fat Acceptance that emerge, the more legitimacy fat studies and fat poetry and fiction acquire. The more we write about being fat, the more our voices are heard, and the more strength and legitimacy we acquire as a group.

That said, there continue to be people, both well-meaning and not, who still haven?t gotten the word, who still feel that fat people (both children and adults) must be slimmed down to be accepted in and by society. Witness, unfortunately, the new Biggest Loser, which features fat kids being yelled at and bullied by slim and completely clueless trainers.

And yet Disney?s anti-fat section was shut down by the work of Fat Activists, the amazing Ragen Chastain prominent among them. Your own blog, Deah, is yet another example of the growth of Fat Acceptance, and that we are now reading and contributing to our own fat-positive media online. Every Fat Acceptance blog fuels more writing, which in turn, fuels acceptance and pride. The big change from the time of publication of the first volume of Fat Poets Speak, in 2009, is that Fat Acceptance has become a media force, with more outreach and more power behind it.

Dr. Deah:? Anything else you would like people to know about Fat Poets Speak?

Frannie Z: I realized as I was writing the above that the explosion in e-books and readers has fueled Fat Acceptance fiction and poetry and non-fiction, as well. What used to take days to acquire now takes minutes. (Yes, Fat Poets Speak is available on Kindle.)

The oh-so-wrong complex of ideas that caused Big Medicine and Big Pharmacy to collude in promoting the idea of fat people as sick and not worthy of equality is also starting to crumble as more and more fudged results of studies come to light. There is no magic pill to combat fat. But there is nothing wrong with being fat. What both volumes of Fat Poets Speak celebrate is that in spite of having been ostracized by a society that felt fat was wrong, we have found and find ways to live gloriously, happily, sadly and defiantly as fat poets and as fat people.

Dr. Deah:? Thank you so much Frannie Zellman for these important, informative and insightful answers.? Best of luck on your books as well! And if you are still in the mood to keep reading, here is the piece I wrote for Fat Poets Speak II: The Cure, or Dr. Seuss Meets Size Acceptance.? I hope you enjoy it!

Til next time,
Dr. Deah

(AP) ? Facebook delivered fourth-quarter results above Wall Street's expectations on Wednesday and sought to show that it has finally transformed into a "mobile company" after rising to dominance as a Web-based social network.

But its stock dropped in after-hours trading as investors placed more significance on the company's growing expenses rather than on its increasing user base and higher advertising revenue.

"Everything was slightly better than expected," said Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter. "I don't see anything here that would make me want to sell the stock."

Nonetheless, Facebook's stock fell $1.11, or 3.6 percent, to $30.13 in after-hours trading following the earnings report.

Facebook Inc. grew its revenue and increased the percentage of it that comes from mobile advertising ? a closely watched figure. But expenses also grew sharply. The company also said 2013 will be a year of "significant investments" and hiring as it focuses on long-term growth rather than short-term profits.

The world's largest social media company earned $64 million, or 3 cents per share, in the October-December period. That's down 79 percent from $302 million, or 14 cents per share, a year earlier when it was still a privately held company.

Revenue rose 40 percent to $1.59 billion from $1.13 billion, surpassing analysts' expectations of $1.51 billion.

Advertising revenue grew 41 percent to $1.33 billion, increasing at a faster clip than in the third quarter, when it climbed 36 percent to $1.09 billion.

Excluding special items, mainly related to stock compensation expenses, Menlo Park, Calif.-based Facebook earned 17 cents per share in the latest quarter. Analysts polled by FactSet expected lower adjusted earnings of 15 cents per share.

"There were no major red flags," said Raymond James analyst Aaron Kessler. "I think expectations may have even been just a little bit higher" than analyst estimates indicated, which may be another reason for the stock price drop.

Facebook's biggest challenge lies in mobile devices. Most Facebook users access it using a mobile phone or tablet computer, yet the 9-year-old company only started showing mobile ads about 9 months ago. Investors have been worried that Facebook isn't taking advantage of its growing mobile user base since before the company's initial public offering in May. Analysts said Wednesday's results show that it is on the right track.

Facebook said it generated 23 percent, or $306 million, of advertising revenue from mobile. That's up from 14 percent or $153 million in the third quarter, the first time it disclosed such information.

Facebook views the mobile space as its biggest opportunity, a point CEO Mark Zuckerberg sought to drive home during Facebook's conference call with analysts.

"It allows us to reach more people, we have more engagement from the people we reach and I think we will be able to make more money for each minute people spend with us on ... mobile devices," he said.

The inroads Facebook made in mobile advertising in the final half of last year impressed Bruno del Ama, CEO of Global X Funds, which owns about 50,000 shares of the company's stock. "We have been surprised about how aggressive they have been," he said.

Facebook has been trying to squeeze in more mobile adverting without alienating users who are more interested in conversing with their friends than being subjected to a marketing blitz. The company appears to be striking the right balance so far, based on the number of people still regularly using the mobile apps, said Kessler of Raymond James.

While Facebook's accelerated revenue growth is a positive sign, there's still a feeling that the company could be doing even more to mine revenue from its mobile audience, Kessler said. He expected Facebook's mobile ad revenue to rise to 25 percent of the company's ad sales or about $350 million in the fourth quarter.

Facebook's monthly user base grew 25 percent from a year earlier to 1.06 billion accounts. About 680 million of them access Facebook using a mobile device each month. The company also said that the number of mobile users who access the site every day surpassed daily users on the Web for the first time in the fourth quarter.

As of the stock market's close on Wednesday, Facebook's stock was up 60 percent since the company's third-quarter earnings report came out in October. But it still hasn't hit its initial public offering price of $38.

The May 18 IPO was by far the biggest one for an Internet company since Google's in 2004, but the excitement quickly deflated. With Wall Street now clamoring for even more mobile ad growth, Facebook's toughest task will be to increase the number of ads on the social network without alienating users.

Pachter suspects that investors may be worried Facebook's expenses are starting to outstrip its revenue growth. That was the case in the fourth quarter when the company's costs, excluding employee stock compensation, soared 67 percent from the previous year to $849 million, mainly due to hiring and infrastructure costs such as data centers and servers. And Facebook promises to keep on spending.

David Ebersman, Facebook's chief financial officer, said Facebook expects total expenses, excluding stock compensation costs, to grow by about 50 percent in 2013. In 2012, these costs amounted to $2.83 billion, an increase of 63 percent from 2011.

The company ended the year with 4,600 employees, a 44 percent increase from the end of 2011.

Website: http://www.clubcorp.com/club/scripts/section/section.asp?NS=PCH&MFCODE=AWMGC&SUBGRP=15

Course History:

This course was founded in 1952 and was designed for golfers that prefer a shorter game that is fun and not incredibly challenging. Most of the players here are women or seniors, but it is still well suited for a professional that just wants to brush up their game. The course has very narrow fairways so accuracy is definitely key.

What You Need to Know:

You can book your tee time by calling the number above, but at this time they do not have online tee times. However, they do offer specials on their website so we do recommend checking there first before you call. Although the prices are already quite low, you can save even more money.

This is a municipal course, so the dress code isn't as severe. However, we still recommend traditional golf attire and no denim. The course does not state whether they are a soft spike facility but we recommend these spikes just in case.

The pro shop is fantastic and is a licensed Titelist and Ping club fitter. The onsite grill has terrific food and can even provide a boxed lunch for your game. The clubhouse is a great place to relax after a game.

Playing Hints:

Although this is an easier course than some, you'll still need to be on your toes. The greens are very short, so working on your putting game is a good idea before you arrive. By the end of a round, you'll probably be a whole lot better at it since these do offer a bit of a challenge.

The first hole looks very easy, but you'll be shooting over the trees to make it to the green. We recommend a very strong tee shot to get the best results on this hole. The eighth hole is a double dog leg, and can be quite a fun challenge. Try to stay as close to the center of the fairway as possible. The tenth hole is considered to be the most challenging one on the entire course and has the reputation as being the narrowest fairway in the area. You'll really want to get a good tee shot to avoid getting stuck in the rough here.

Diabetes drug could hold promise for lung cancer patients

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Ever since discovering a decade ago that a gene altered in lung cancer regulated an enzyme used in therapies against diabetes, Reuben Shaw has wondered if drugs originally designed to treat metabolic diseases could also work against cancer.

The growing evidence that cancer and metabolism are connected, emerging from a number of laboratories around the world over the past 10 years, has further fueled these hopes, though scientists are still working to identify what tumors might be most responsive and which drugs most useful.

Now, in a new study in the journal Cancer Cell, Shaw and a team of scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies found that phenformin, a derivative of the widely-used diabetes drug metformin, decreased the size of lung tumors in mice and increased the animals' survival. The findings may give hope to the nearly 30 percent of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumors lack LKB1 (also called STK11).

The LKB1 gene turns on a metabolic enzyme called AMPK when energy levels of ATP, molecules that store the energy we need for just about everything we do, run low in cells. In a previous study, Shaw, an associate professor in Salk's Molecular and Cell Biology Laboratory and researcher in the Institute's new Helmsley Center for Genomic Medicine, demonstrated that cells lacking a normal copy of the LKB1 gene fail to activate AMPK in response to low energy levels. LKB1-dependent activation of AMPK serves as a low-energy checkpoint in the cell. Cells that lack LKB1 are unable to sense such metabolic stress and initiate the process to restore their ATP levels following a metabolic change. As a result, these LKB1-mutant cells run out of cellular energy and undergo apoptosis, or programmed cell death, whereas cells with intact LKB1 are alerted to the crisis and re-correct their metabolism.

"The driving idea behind the research is knowing that AMPK serves as a sensor for low energy loss in cells and that LKB1-deficient cells lack the ability to activate AMPK and sense energy loss," says David Shackelford, a postdoctoral researcher at Salk who spearheaded the study in Shaw's lab and is now an assistant professor at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine.

That led Shaw and his team to a class of drugs called biguanides, which lower cellular energy levels by attacking the power stations of the cell, called mitochondria. Metformin and phenformin both inhibit mitochondria; however, phenformin is nearly 50 times as potent as metformin. In the study, the researchers tested phenformin as a chemotherapy agent in genetically-engineered mice lacking LKB1 and which had advanced stage lung tumors. After three weeks of treatment, Shaw and his team saw a modest reduction in tumor burden in the mice.

Continuing the study between Salk and UCLA, Shaw and Shackelford coordinated teams in both locations to perform further testing on mice with earlier stage disease, using cutting-edge imaging technologies just like those used on lung cancer patients in the clinic. They found that early phenformin treatment causes increased survival and slower tumor progression in tumors lacking LKB1, but had no significant benefit for tumors with alterations in other lung cancer genes. This specificity in treatment fits with an emerging approach in cancer treatment nationwide, known as personalized medicine, in which the therapies for each patient are selected based on the genes altered in their tumors.

"This study is a proof-of-principle that drugs of this chemical type cause energy stress and lower ATP levels to where it kills LKB1-deficient cells without damaging normal, healthy cells," says Shaw, senior author of the study.

The Food and Drug Administration took phenformin off the market in 1978 due to a high risk of lactic acid buildup in patients with compromised kidney function, which is not uncommon among diabetics but less of an issue for most cancer patients. The issue of kidney toxicity would also be bypassed in cancer patients because the course of treatment is much shorter, measured in weeks to months compared to years of treatment for diabetes patients.

The next step is to determine if phenformin alone would be a sufficient therapy for certain subsets of NSCLC or if the drug would perform better in combination with existing cancer drugs. Based on their findings, the researchers say that phenformin would be most useful in treating early-stage LKB1-mutant NSCLC, as an adjuvant therapy following surgical removal of a tumor, or in combination with other therapeutics for advanced tumors.

"The good news," says Shackelford, "is that our work provides a basis to initiate human studies. If we can organize enough clinicians who believe in investigating phenformin -- and many do -- then phenformin as an anti-cancer agent could be a reality in the next several years."

Other researchers on the study were Laurie Gerken, Debbie S. Vasquez, and Mathias Leblanc of the Salk Institute, and Evan Abt, Atsuko Seki, Liu Wei, Michael C. Fishbein, Johannes Czernin, and Paul S. Mischel, of the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles.

The work was supported by the Salk Institute's Dulbecco Center for Cancer Research, the Adler Family Foundation, the Ahmanson Translational Imaging Division at UCLA, the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, the National Institutes of Health, the American Cancer Society, the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Leona M. and Harry B. dotMobi's top ten trends for 2013 - Mobile Entertainment

Marketing manager Martin Clancy offers his thoughts on what will happen in the mobile web world this year.

ME has recently partnered with mobile web specialist dotMobi for a mini-series, comprising interviews, opinion, and guidance. The company has highlighted how crucial mobile sites are for businesses, the importance of device detection, the issue of mobile web fragmentation and the ten questions businesses should answer before developing a mobile web strategy.

With 2013 underway, dotMobi's marketing manager Martin Clancy has identified some key trends for the year ahead from a mobile web perspective.

The proliferation of a vast array of different device types shows no signs of abating, with connected devices turning up in new contexts all the time ? for example we recently added a web enabled tablet from Toys R Us to our DeviceAtlas platform. One trend we?re noting at the moment is watch phones ? we?ll see if that one gains widespread traction or stays niche. That?s just on the device side of the equation - new operating environments like Mozilla?s mobile OS and Tizen may take further strides in 2013.

Transport of 1?s and 0?s over the internet is increasing. That?s not particularly specific to 2013, but the trend towards moving between multiple devices is most definitely on the increase. It means that marketers and brands need to tailor not only their content to be consumed across different screens but also to report and measure their campaigns on these channels.

TV as a primary source of media continues to be challenged by other device types as noted by Nielsen, the number of US households with TVs is in decline for the last 2 years.

Brands will have to be much more conscious of context, and that goes beyond a simple desktop/mobile dichotomy. Just because you are on a phone, doesn?t mean you are rushing about the place or on public transport ? the vast majority of tablet use is at home, but still it?s difficult to make contextual assumptions unless you know about the characteristics of the accessing device.

We think you?ll hear more about this in 2013, a kind of best of both worlds approach to content adaptation, where an initial identification of the device can determine when to send an adaptive experience. It won?t be right for everyone, but it offers a better way than pure responsive to delivering great experiences without serving massive code payloads to all devices.

We?ve seen a rapid growth in m-commerce ? we?ve seen over 33 per cent of goMobi sites include an m-commerce feature.? Google say 67 per cent of consumers said they?re more likely to make a purchase if a site is mobile-friendly. More proof that mobile web translates to real revenue.

Despite the promise of higher speeds with the roll out of LTE, only the foolhardy would dismiss bandwidth and network usage efficiency as something to aspire to for mobile content. Short version: speed still matters in the UX stakes. Check out this tool to see what page weight you are delivering to mobile devices.

Native apps still have their place but we think that the native app has already reached its high water mark, and there will be a continued shift of emphasis towards HTML5 apps delivered over the web. It just doesn?t make sense to maintain native apps across various platforms for many businesses.

It has exploded over the past couple of years. We think that trend is set to continue as more mobile specific real estate comes on stream.

Mobile phones will become the dominant web accessing device sometime by Q3 this year. Gartner said this, we think they are right and said so back in February 2012 - in any case the genie is well and truly out of the bottle by now.

FCC filing reveals Apple TV model A1469 with slightly smaller dimensions

Apple TV clears the FCC,

We don't generally find surprises from Apple in the daily stream of FCC documents and test reports, but a new filing published today seems to suggest that a new Apple TV model of some sort could be on the way. While the diagram pictured above doesn't suggest any major changes to the device's appearance, it does list some slightly smaller measurements: 93.78mm square compared to the 98mm of the current model. That's certainly not the biggest of differences, but the measurements in previous Apple FCC filing have been spot on. The model number, A1469, is also one that we haven't seen before, but the documents unfortunately don't offer much else in the way of details (only confirmation of the same WiFi capabilities as the current-gen Apple TV).

As MacRumors noted yesterday, a look at the download options for the latest Apple TV software update also revealed a new "AppleTV3,2" model, which it speculated could be an international version of the device -- although it of course remains to be seen if it and this model are one in the same. For now, you can get a closer look at the filing yourself at the source link.

Pennsylvania: accused Franciscan friar commits suicide : News ...

CWN - January 28, 2013

A Franciscan friar who was accused of abuse by dozens of his former male students has committed suicide.

Brother Stephen Baker, TOR, worked as a teacher and coach at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School in Warren, Oh., from 1986 to 1992 and at Bishop McCort Catholic High School in Johnstown, Penn., from 1992 to 2002.

In 1998, Brother Baker also served as one of nine members of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown?s confirmation committee.

In October, the Diocese of Youngstown and the Immaculate Conception Province of the Franciscan Friars of the Third Order Regular settled with 11 former students. As news of the settlement became known, dozens more of his former students have come forward in recent weeks.

A different province of the Third Order Regular is associated with Saint Francis University in Loretto, Penn., and Franciscan University of Steubenville.

Putin fires head of Russia's restive Dagestan region

MOSCOW (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin has dismissed the head of Russia's southerly Dagestan province, the Kremlin said on Monday, signaling concern over mounting Islamist violence, corruption and political rivalries in the Caucasus.

Putin appointed Magomedsalam Magomedov, 49, to a role in the presidential administration, the Kremlin statement said, removing him from a post that he had held since 2010.

Ramzan Abdulatipov, 67, a veteran politician elected last year as deputy head of the ruling United Russia party in the lower house of parliament, was named acting head of Dagestan. The Kremlin did not specify any reason for the move.

Throughout the 13 years since Putin rose to power and crushed a separatist revolt in Chechnya, Russia has battled a simmering insurgency across its mainly Muslim provinces strung along the northern flank of the Caucasus mountains.

Dagestan is now the center of militant violence in the region, where suicide bombings, sniper attacks on officials and shootouts at road checkpoints are a near daily occurrence.

In 2012, militants killed 211 law enforcement officers and 78 civilians in the North Caucasus, the head of the Interior Ministry's operations in the region said last week.

The impending 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, at the opposite, Western end of the Caucasus, is making control of the Islamist threat ever more urgent.

"Dagestan is without question the most important security concern in the region and, with the Sochi Olympics approaching, the Kremlin needs to impose order," said Akhmed Yarlikapov, an expert on Dagestan with the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Islamist insurgency and a wider turn toward religious conservatism in the north Caucasus are fuelled at least in part by soaring unemployment as well as anger about corruption and the failure of authorities to provide basic health care, policing and education.

The province is due to hold elections in the autumn - although under a draft bill backed by Putin's ruling party, the vote could be scrapped in favor of a system that would allow Putin to pick his preferred candidate.

While born in Dagestan, Abdulatipov has mostly lived in Moscow and as such is viewed as less tainted by fierce political and business rivalries over resources and public funds in the Caspian Sea region, experts said.

Abdulatipov told the Itar-tass news agency that he planned to "fight unemployment and corruption, and take all possible measures to guarantee security in the region".

Team flag waves as 49ers arrive for Super Bowl

(AP) ? Jim Harbaugh stepped to the podium, smirked a bit, and greeted his first news conference as a Super Bowl coach.

"We're super happy to be here," he said Sunday night as his NFC champion San Francisco 49ers arrived in the Big Easy for the big game.

"I think this team has the best focus on unity and winning I've ever been a part of."

Considering that Harbaugh was an NFL quarterback for 14 seasons and a successful college coach before joining the 49ers, he knows something about winning.

Under Harbaugh, San Francisco has been to two NFC title games and, now, to its first Super Bowl in 18 years. The Niners (13-4-1) will play Baltimore (13-6), coached by Harbaugh's older brother, John, in next Sunday's Super Bowl.

He is certain his team is ready for the task as the 49ers seek their sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy; they are 5-0 in Super Bowls.

"These are uncharted waters for a rookie Super Bowl coach," Harbaugh said. "But that's exciting. It's a great thrill, and we have a desire to be in uncharted waters. We always strive for that kind of challenge."

Earlier in the evening, with a team flag waving from an open window of their chartered plane, the 49ers arrived in a businesslike manner. The players calmly walked off the airplane ? no video recorders or cameras, no waves to onlookers.

Most of the team's veteran players disembarked first, including center Jonathan Goodwin, who won a Super Bowl three years ago with the Saints.

"You get to go to the Super Bowl with your childhood team, so that's something special to me," he said. "So hopefully I can find a way to win the Super Bowl with my childhood team."

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick, wearing a red wool cap sporting "49ers" on it, mouthed the words to a song on his headphones as he walked on the tarmac.

He seemed just as relaxed 90 minutes later as he met the media.

"Pressure comes from a lack of preparation," said Kaepernick, who took over as the starter when Alex Smith got a concussion in November and has been sensational in keeping the job. "This is not a pressure situation. It's a matter of going out and performing."

Harbaugh said the 49ers came to New Orleans on Sunday to simulate a normal week. He likened their trip to his strategy the last two seasons when the 49ers spent a week in Youngstown, Ohio, between Eastern games rather than return to the Bay Area.

He liked the way the players and coaches bonded during that experience.

"Same approach," Harbaugh said. "Enjoy the moment and the preparation. I think our team enjoys that the most: the meetings, the preparation and then, especially, the competition."

Banking official: Watch those asset prices

(AP) ? A top international finance official is warning banks to be cautious about the prices of investments that have gone up sharply because of current low interest rates.

Jaime Caruana, the general manager of the Bank for International Settlements, says the low interest rates in effect now may have made it difficult to assess the true value of those investments.

In an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Caruana told The Associated Press that banks and their regulators "should be vigilant on the prices of some of these assets."

That's so that bank finances are solid in case those assets fall in price when central banks in developed countries start raising interest rates as the economy recovers.

Investments such as U.S. junk bonds ? bonds issued by corporations with less than perfect credit ratings ? have gone up as investors abandon lower-yielding, safer investments in search of higher interest yields. That rise, however, could go into reverse when rates rise. And that could mean losses for investors and banks if they are not careful ahead of time.

"We should be monitoring the levels of the asset prices that have moved rapidly, particularly in risky assets," Caruana said. "Financial institutions need to understand that the level of rates is very low."

At some point, there will be "a return to normality. and I think they should be at some point in time resilient to this type of movements," said Caruana.

The Bank for International Settlements, based in Basel, Switzerland, is a global organization of central banks. Its members include the U.S. Federal Reserve, Bank of Japan, Bank of England, and the European Central Bank, which conducts monetary policy for the 17 countries that use the euro.

Caruana's caution follows a similar warning from the Institute of International Finance, a global association of banks, investment funds and other financial institutions. The IIF this week warned that low rates could mean a "boom-bust cycle" once the central banks withdraw their stimulus.

Central banks in the richer countries ? such as the U.S. Federal Reserve, the Bank of England and the Bank of Japan ? have lowered interest rates to record lows and pushed newly created money into the financial system by purchasing financial assets.

Caruana avoided mentioning any individual country's policies but said central banks had done the right thing by making a strong effort to support the economy at a time of crisis.

Technology kills jobs for middle class | TribLIVE

By The Associated Press

Published: Saturday, January 26, 2013, 12:01?a.m.
Updated 14 hours ago

NEW YORK ? Five years after the start of the Great Recession, the toll is terrifyingly clear: Millions of middle-class jobs have been lost in developed countries the world over.

And the situation is even worse than it appears.

Most of the jobs will never return, and millions more are likely to vanish as well, say experts who study the labor market. What?s more, these jobs aren?t just being lost to China and other developing countries, and they aren?t just factory work. Increasingly, jobs are disappearing in the service sector, home to two-thirds of all workers.

They?re being obliterated by technology.

Year after year, the software that runs computers and an array of other machines and devices becomes more sophisticated and powerful and capable of doing more efficiently tasks that humans have always done. For decades, science fiction warned of a future when we would be architects of our own obsolescence, replaced by our machines; an Associated Press analysis finds that the future has arrived.

?The jobs that are going away aren?t coming back,? says Andrew McAfee, principal research scientist at the Center for Digital Business at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and co-author of ?Race Against the Machine.? ??I have never seen a period where computers demonstrated as many skills and abilities as they have over the past seven years.?

The global economy is being reshaped by machines that generate and analyze vast amounts of data; by devices such as smartphones and tablet computers that let people work just about anywhere; by smarter, nimbler robots; and by services that let businesses rent computing power when they need it, instead of installing expensive equipment and hiring IT staffs to run it. Whole employment categories, from secretaries to travel agents, are starting to disappear.

?There?s no sector of the economy that?s going to get a pass,? says Martin Ford, who runs a software company and wrote ?The Lights in the Tunnel,? a book predicting widespread job losses. ?It?s everywhere.?

The numbers startle labor economists. In the United States, half the 7.5 million jobs lost during the Great Recession were in industries that pay middle-class wages, ranging from $38,000 to $68,000. But only 2 percent of the 3.5 million jobs gained since the recession ended in June 2009 are in midpay industries. Nearly 70 percent are in low-pay industries, 29 percent in industries that pay well.

In the 17 European countries that use the euro as their currency, the numbers are worse. Almost 4.3 million low-pay jobs have been gained since mid-2009, but the loss of midpay jobs has never stopped. A total of 7.6 million disappeared from January 2008 through last June.

Experts warn that this ?hollowing out? of the middle-class workforce is far from over. They predict the loss of millions more jobs as technology becomes even more sophisticated and reaches deeper into our lives. Maarten Goos, an economist at the University of Leuven in Belgium, says Europe could double its middle-class job losses.

Some occupations are beneficiaries of the march of technology, such as software engineers and app designers for smartphones and tablet computers. Overall, though, technology is eliminating far more jobs than it is creating.

To understand the impact technology is having on middle-class jobs in developed countries, the AP analyzed employment data from 20 countries; tracked changes in hiring by industry, pay and task; compared job losses and gains during recessions and expansions over the past four decades; and interviewed economists, technology experts, robot manufacturers, software developers, entrepreneurs and people in the labor force who ranged from CEOs to the unemployed.

The AP?s key findings:

? For more than three decades, technology has reduced the number of jobs in manufacturing. Robots and other machines controlled by computer programs work faster and make fewer mistakes than humans. Now, that same efficiency is being unleashed in the service economy, which employs more than two-thirds of the workforce in developed countries. Technology is eliminating jobs in office buildings, retail establishments and other businesses consumers deal with every day.

? Technology is being adopted by every kind of organization that employs people. It?s replacing workers in large corporations and small businesses, established companies and start-ups. It?s being used by schools, colleges and universities; hospitals and other medical facilities; nonprofit organizations and the military.

? The most vulnerable workers are doing repetitive tasks that programmers can write software for ? an accountant checking a list of numbers, an office manager filing forms, a paralegal reviewing documents for key words to help in a case. As software becomes even more sophisticated, victims are expected to include those who juggle tasks, such as supervisors and managers ? workers who thought they were protected by a college degree.

? Thanks to technology, companies in the Standard & Poor?s 500 stock index reported one-third more profit the past year than they earned the year before the Great Recession. They?ve also expanded their businesses, but total employment, at 21.1 million, has declined by a half-million.

? Start-ups account for much of the job growth in developed economies, but software is allowing entrepreneurs to launch businesses with a third fewer employees than in the 1990s. There is less need for administrative support and back-office jobs that handle accounting, payroll and benefits.

? It?s becoming a self-serve world. Instead of relying on someone else in the workplace or our personal lives, we use technology to do tasks ourselves. Some find this frustrating; others like the feeling of control. Either way, this trend will only grow as software permeates our lives.

? Technology is replacing workers in developed countries regardless of their politics, policies and laws. Union rules and labor laws may slow the dismissal of employees, but no country is attempting to prohibit organizations from using technology that allows them to operate more efficiently ? and with fewer employees.

Technological innovations have been throwing people out of jobs for centuries. But they eventually created more work, and greater wealth, than they destroyed. Ford, the author and software engineer, thinks there is reason to believe that this time will be different. He sees virtually no end to the inroads of computers into the workplace. Eventually, he says, software will threaten the livelihoods of doctors, lawyers and other highly skilled professionals.

Many economists are encouraged by history and think the gains eventually will outweigh the losses. But even they have doubts.

?What?s different this time is that digital technologies show up in every corner of the economy,? McAfee says.

Peter Lindert, an economist at the University of California, Davis, says the computer is more destructive than innovations in the Industrial Revolution because the pace at which it is upending industries makes it hard for people to adapt.

Occupations that provided middle-class lifestyles for generations can disappear in a few years. Utility meter readers are just one example. As power companies began installing so-called smart readers outside homes, the number of meter readers in the United States plunged from 56,000 in 2001 to 36,000 in 2010, according to the Labor Department.

In 10 years? That number is expected to be zero.

NYC Food Truck Lunch: 'Moc 'n Cheese' & Chunky Veggie Soup ...

(credit: New York Street Food)

(credit: New York Street Food)

Perry, the voice behind New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City food trucks.

One of the newer street vendors in NYC is The Squeeze. They started with a food truck last May, then added a cart in November. The truck has been parking in Tribeca, and the cart has been parked on Union Square West between 14-15 St.

The Squeeze sells ?raw comfort food.? Think cold pressed juices, booster shots, cleanses, and a few other healthy goodies.

(credit: New York Street Food)

(credit: New York Street Food)

On our first visit to The Squeeze, we had a vegan hot dog with kimchi topping. That was not one of our more enjoyable lunches, but we seem to have found the sweet spot on our second visit.

We ordered a ?moc ?n cheese? for $7, and since it was a cold day (to say the least), also got an order of chunky veggie soup for $5.

We started with the soup, and chunky veggie soup was not an understatement.

The portion size was small for $5, but the soup was jam-packed with veggies. The main vegetables were carrots, zucchini and cabbage, which nearly filled the cup to its brim.

The vegetable broth was tasty too. There was a very slight sweetness to the broth, and a rich vegetable flavor.

There were 3 different soups available at The Squeeze, and they all looked good. We almost got nutmeg cauliflower, but one of the guys on the bikes in the photo below heartily endorsed the chunky veggie soup, and he was right. It was excellent.

We almost got the moc ?n cheese on our first visit, and made sure to get it this time.

(credit: New York Street Food)

(credit: New York Street Food)

The macaroni was made with quinoa pasta, which didn?t taste much different to us than pasta made with flour, eggs and water. The texture was pretty similar too, albeit on the soft side.

The cheese sauce was made with raw cashew cheese, and it had a fairly strong cheesy flavor. We?re not too up on vegan food, but this dish was tasty and filling, two of the more important traits to us.

There were even some cereal flakes in the center of the dish to add some crunch.

Glad we went back for a second visit, because it was definitely more enjoyable than the first.

You can follow The Squeeze on?Twitter here, and their Facebook is here.?You can also check out the full menu on their?website here.

Obama's recess appointments ruled unconstitutional

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A federal appeals court on Friday invalidated President Barack Obama's "recess" appointments to a labor board last year, ruling that the move was unconstitutional and dealing a blow to Obama's strategy of bypassing Senate Republicans.

The three appointments to the National Labor Relations Board in January 2012 were made while the Senate was out of town but potentially available to act on them.

"Considering the text, history, and structure of the Constitution, these appointments were invalid from their inception," the panel said.

Obama also used such a "recess" appointment last January to install Richard Cordray as head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, although his appointment was not part of the lawsuit.

The suit started as a routine dispute between soda bottling company Noel Canning and the labor board, but lawyers for Senate Republicans seized on the suit as a chance to challenge the appointments.

The case was seen as a test of the limits of the president's ability to make appointments during a Senate recess, a power that bypasses the Senate's usual ability to block nominees and that dates to the U.S. Constitution of 1787.

At the time, the Senate was not officially in recess, meeting every few days for minutes at a time but accomplishing no work and with few senators present. Meanwhile, Obama's nominees remained on the Senate's calendar, blocked by Republicans from up or down votes on their confirmation.

Nancy Cleeland, a spokeswoman for the NLRB, had no immediate comment.

Cordray's appointment was challenged in a separate lawsuit brought in June by the State National Bank of Big Spring, Texas, and other institutions. That suit presented a similar argument that the recess appointment was invalid because the Senate was technically in session.

Cordray's appointment followed months of rancorous debate over the new consumer bureau, which was created by the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial oversight law to police markets for products such as credit cards and home loans.

Once rare, recess appointments became more common in the late 1970s as a way to bypass the confirmation process, which senators have used increasingly to block nominees of both Republican and Democratic presidents.

Recent presidents pushed the boundaries. George W. Bush took the rare step of filling a judgeship during a recess, while Obama appointed the NLRB members while the Senate was holding "skeleton" sessions set up to keep it from going into recess.
