Up your game - Food - The Olympian - Olympia, Washington news ...

SUSAN M. SELASKY | DETROIT FREE PRESS ? Published October 31, 2012 Modified October 30, 2012

DETROIT - As fans rev up for football games, so does their tailgating repertoire.

In parking lots on game day, tailgaters elevate their food to big and bold levels.

Consider cedar planked salmon, rubbed with applewood seasoned rub and smoked over applewood chips. Or meatloaf smoked on the grill in a special pan. Or a pizza and nacho bar.

?You have to keep it interesting,? says Robert Green of Waterford, Mich., who was tailgating before the recent Detroit Lions home game against the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 30.

Green usually tailgates with his friends, the Merrill family, and says they generally have a theme, like a pizza and nacho bar.

?It?s basically a standard pizza, and you choose toppings. It?s just cooked outside on top of a grill,? says Green, 26.

For the home opener, Green says they roasted a 150-pound pig. Throughout the season, they?ll do a chili cook-off and a seafood buffet with Alaskan king crab, shrimp scampi, lobster tails and jambalaya.

Nearby, Louis Gross, 49, of Clinton Township, Mich., was making his tailgate meatloaf.

He smokes it on a kettle-style grill in a special pan. That infused smoky flavor permeates the meatloaf because the pan has a perforated bottom.

?The holes allow the grease to drip through the bottom so the meatloaf isn?t sitting in its own grease,? says Gross.

Jessie McElwain, 50, of Sterling Heights, Mich., who tailgates with Gross, says applewood smoked salmon is one of his specialties.

?It?s real simple. A skinless salmon rubbed with olive oil and my specialty apple spice rub,? McElwain says. ?Cook it about an hour (on cedar planks). Don?t flip it or anything.?

While many tailgaters pull out all the stops, Ken Lasley?s shrimp boil was a sight to behold.

?Most of the guys like it, and it always draws attention,? says Lasley, 33, of Birch Run, Mich.

Lasley and his brother Ed Lasley follow their great grandfather J McNier?s method for making the shrimp boil.

First, they fill a tall pot with water (about 8 cups) and pour in Hamm?s beer (about 30 cans). The mixture is set on a propane burner and brought to a full boil. Lasley stirs Coach?s Low Country Boil seasoning and then adds halved red-skin potatoes and corn on the cob halves. Ken Lasley cooks them for 10 minutes; chunks of smoked sausage and quartered onion are added and cooked for another 20 minutes.

At the end, about 6 pounds of 24-30 count raw shrimp are cooked for just a few minutes.

?We do all the prep work right there,? Lasley says.

One piece of advice tailgaters agree on is to have a plan and prepare ahead.

National GOP to spend $500,000 in Pa. Senate race

(AP) ? National Republicans are spending $500,000 on the Pennsylvania Senate race as polls show a closer contest between Democratic Sen. Bob Casey and Republican Tom Smith, a wealthy tea party candidate who has invested more than $16 million into his bid.

An official with the National Republican Senatorial Committee said Friday that the organization was giving half a million dollars in initial coordinated funds to Smith, who can increase his ad buys especially in western Pennsylvania.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity to freely discuss election strategy in Senate races.

Pennsylvania had been considered a safe seat for the first-term Casey, but recent surveys show the Democrat's double-digit advantage reduced to a few percentage points. A Quinnipiac University poll released last week showed Casey with 48 percent to Smith's 45 percent.

Guy Cecil, executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, said Democratic polling and other surveys showed a larger lead for Casey.

"I'm comfortable with where the race is today, and I think Bob Casey is going to win," Cecil said in an interview.

Pressed on whether national Democrats would spend money on the race, Cecil said, "Obviously we're always assessing the race, so we're not going to announce any plans or not announce any plans prematurely, but we'll continue to monitor the race pretty closely."

Casey is bidding for a second term against a Republican who didn't have the backing of the state's Republican governor but scored a surprise win in the primary. A political newcomer, Smith made a fortune in coal mining and has been on course to outspend Casey by 2-to-1 since July 1.

This week, the Majority PAC, a Democratic political action committee, began running TV ads in Pittsburgh to help Casey. The commercial criticizes Smith for his plans to eliminate the federal Education Department, arguing that it would mean less money in classrooms and less aid for college students.

The Smith campaign said he has not ruled out keeping some Education Department functions, such as Pell grants.

Casey, a moderate Democrat, is the son of a former governor, a veteran of several statewide races and popular with labor unions in a strong labor state. Although Republicans are investing in the race, strong Democratic turnout in Philadelphia, especially in a presidential election year, often dashes GOP hopes.

Orbitz for Business Promotes Consumerization of Corporate Travel ...

CHICAGO, Oct. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ ??At the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) Procurement Symposium today in Los Angeles, Orbitz for Business Vice President of Strategy and Account Management Mark L. Walton spoke to the importance of ?consumerization? in corporate travel through the development of online tools that deliver a planning and booking experience that more closely mirrors the process business travelers already use for leisure travel.? Such innovation will continually improve the corporate travel experience for travel managers and travelers alike, Walton argued, leading to increased online adoption and adherence to company policy while empowering travelers with intuitive, convenient technology that truly meets their needs.

?Travel managers prefer the control and minimized risk of a travel program sourced to a single TMC,? said Walton.? ?But with that control comes a perception among travelers that they have limited choice and flexibility, so we must continue innovating to deliver technology and tools that more closely match the ones travelers already use for their leisure travel bookings.? Doing so will provide flexibility and convenience throughout the planning and booking process, which will in turn lead to the increased online adoption travel managers seek to effectively meet company goals.?

Adam Goldstein, cofounder of Hipmunk, moderated the GBTA Procurement Symposium panel titled ?The Consumerization of Travel,? with Carol McDowell, manager of corporate travel services at FINRA, and David LeCompte, CEO of Short?s Travel Management, also serving as panelists alongside Walton.

How To Cut Business Costs Without Layoffs Of Quality Employees In ...

Cutting Costs Human Resources

Save Money Without Layoffs

When times are tough and business opportunities are not growing as expected, companies often choose to lay off workers. But poorly thought-out layoffs can lead to the loss of valuable employees. Total HR Management believes a company should consider cutting other business costs before taking the risk of losing experienced employees with proven track records. As a result, here are 5 alternative ways to cut costs in challenging economic periods without laying off employees:

1) Trim spending on training and travel to avoid layoffs

Rather than?hiring?an expensive training consultant, form employee discussion groups so that your workers can learn about the latest industry updates. In tough times, in-house training options take advantage of and access the talent your company already possesses. Videoconferences and Internet connections make on-site visits to clients and potential clients less essential. Reduce travel expenses by judging the true value of each proposed business trip.

2) Review your telecommuting policies

Providing office space for all your employees is costly and often unnecessary. Telecommuting employees are willing to make sacrifices in exchange for spending less money on gas and other commuting expenses. If it does not need to be done in your office, can it possibly be done from an employee?s home? Can your employees divide their time between working at home and working at the office, switching off to lower expenses?

3) Regularly seek estimates from your suppliers and their competitors

Are you getting the most for your dollar? Your suppliers and their competitors should be finding ways to help your business save money. In a competitive environment, incentives and bargains make sense. In addition, with the Internet providing access to the world, can you expand beyond your local suppliers to find better deals?

4) Freeze hiring to avoid Layoffs

How many companies are laying off workers in one division but also?hiring in another? While some new hiring may be needed to adjust to changes in the direction of your business, retraining current employees may be a better and less costly alternative. Make sure you are taking advantage of the assets presented by your permanent employee base to help your company.

5) Avoid Contract Staff and Consultants

Contract staff and consulting firms significantly markup their bills to cover their expenses. This extra cost could be used as?compensation?paid to your own permanent employees or new employees you hire directly yourself for less. Consultants are far less likely to be loyal to your company than the people you keep on your own payroll. Rather than laying off permanent employees, avoid using consultants and contract staff and paying the extra costs.

Total HR Management understands how challenging it can be to succeed in today?s economic climate. Even in a Presidential election year, the roller-coaster ride seems to be continuing. When your business is getting squeezed, make sure you examine these possible alternatives before you lay off valuable employees. After all, your most valuable resources are your human resources.

What Fears Are Holding Your Small Business Back? | Small ...

Halloween is almost here and creepy things are everywhere. It?s the time of year when we enjoy a good fright. But are there other (not-so-fun) fears holding your small business back from getting where you want it to go?

One of the joys of running your own business is that you get to decide what happens next. You don?t have to do what a boss is telling you. But sometimes, that can backfire if you avoid doing things that make you scared or uncomfortable. Yes, you may be able to get your business to a certain level of success without ever facing your demons. But if you want to achieve breakthrough growth, you need to push past the fears that are holding you back.

business fear

What kinds of fears are you facing (or failing to face)?

Below?are some common ones:

Fear Of Technology

Technology moves so fast today that sometimes it?s tempting to just throw up your hands and say, ?I?ll never get up to speed.? Well, your business can?t afford that attitude. Even if you?re a dyed-in-the-wool technophobe, you need to get over it, because today technology is essential to give your small business an edge.

Start by hiring someone (inside or outsourced) who knows the stuff you don?t and can get your company up to speed. If you must, take a class (online or off) to learn the basics. Enlist a patient friend to tutor you. Anything that gets you comfortable with what you need to know.

Fear Of Sales

This is a huge one for lots of entrepreneurs, myself included. When we first started our business, I struggled with fears of seeming pushy, aggressive or money-grubbing when I went out to ask for the sale. I wish I could tell you there?s some easy formula for getting over this fear, but there isn?t.

I just had to do it over and over, until it got easier (I didn?t say easy). Practice makes (almost) perfect.

Fear Of Being A Boss

When your company is young and small, it?s easy to feel like you and your tiny team are pretty much equals, and that?s more comfortable for many entrepreneurs who don?t want to be perceived as the distant ?boss-man.? However, as your business grows, you?ll have to distance yourself a bit so you can take on sometimes scary tasks like making unpopular decisions, or disciplining employees who aren?t working out.

I?m not saying you can?t be a nice, friendly boss, but acknowledging that you are the boss is a crucial step in getting your business to the next level.

Fear Of Networking

It?s easier than ever to network through social media today, and many of us are great at that. But you also need to go offline sometimes and get up close and personal. Networking has earned an unfortunate reputation as phony ?schmoozing,? but in reality, it?s how relationships are built and business is done.

Make sure you invite your online connections out for coffee or lunch on a regular basis, attend networking events and industry conferences, and generally put yourself out there. If you?re shy (like I am), start with things in your comfort zone (like coffee with one person) and move up to the big leagues gradually?but do move up, or your business won?t.

Fear Of Success

When you get stuck in the day-to-day running your business and making payroll, sometimes your sights get set too low. Do that long enough, and you may decide it?s not worth dreaming big because you?ll never get there anyway.

That?s the surest route to business stagnation and a ho-hum life. To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, take your eyes off the ground and make time to look at the stars.

iPad Mini starts at $329, is thinner than a pencil

15 hrs.

"This isn't just a shrunken down iPad,"?Phil Schiller,?Apple's senior?vice president of worldwide marketing, said as he showed off the all new iPad Mini during Apple's media event on Tuesday. "It's an entirely new design."

The iPad Mini is 7.2 millimeters thin (that's about as thin as a pencil). It weights 0.68 pounds, which is as light as a standard pad of paper.?These measurements make the iPad Mini 23 percent thinner and 53 percent lighter than the third-generation iPad.?The tablet is a 7.9-inch device with a?1024??768 pixel resolution.?"Easy to remember. 7.9, 9.7," Schiller said, contrasting?the measurements of the?iPad Mini and the regular iPad.

There's a dual-core A5 chip, a FaceTime HD camera in the front, a 5MP iSight camera in the back, a Lightning connector, and all the usual iPad guts, of course. From the sounds of it, the iPad Mini contains the power of the iPad 2, with some slight upgrades (and a much smaller body). ?According to Schiller, the iPad Mini has a 10-hour battery life, which is about?on par with the battery life Google advertises for the Nexus 7.

Schiller took several jabs at Google's popular 7-inch tablet, ouf course, pointing out that???unlike the Nexus 7???the iPad Mini has over 275,000 apps specifically designed for tablets available to it, rather than a bunch of scaled-up phone apps.

"We took the time to create a product that was a concentration of, but not a reduction of, the original product,"?Apple's senior vice president of industrial Design, Jony Ive, pointed out in a video shown during the media event.

Like the iPad, the iPad Mini has a line of accessories such as Apple's Smart Covers, naturally. "It is every inch an iPad," a commercial shown during the event emphasized.

The iPad Mini starts at $329 for a 16GB Wi-Fi-only model. 32Gb and 64 GB Wi-Fi-only models are available for $429 and $529, respectively, while their LTE-capable counterparts are priced at $459, $559, and $659, for the 16GB, 32GB, and 63GB versions, respectively.

Pre-orders start on Oct. 26. The Wi-Fi-only models will ship a week later, on Nov. 2. The LTE-enabled models will ship about two weeks later.

Video: Left vs. right on final race to White House

>> us, michael smerconish , a syndicated radio hall. welcome to both of you.

>> good morning.

>> the race we know is razor tight. romney advisers say they have momentum and obama advisers say they have the get out the vote and ability in the key states. which would you rather have?

>> the momentum has favored governor romney the last three weeks ever since the first debate. the question is whether or not president obama cauterized the bleeding with his strong debate performance in the third debate. the goal is energize your base and make a play for independents, and that's what you see them doing in the final 13 days .

>> let me pick up on that with crystal. we see the president very fiery out on the campaign trail deploying his new favorite term romnesia. mitt romney says if he's attacking me it just shows he doesn't have a better plan. is there any danger on the part of the president by using the sarcasm he'll turn off independents by firing up the base?

>> he's responding to criticism that he hasn't talked enough about his own term for a second term. as you pointed out earlier, he's released a 20-page booklet outlining what he would do in a second term centered around the idea of economic patriotism . he wants to underscore, no, i don't only have complaints about the other guy, i also have plans of my own that i want to implement in a second term.

>> michael, what do you make of this book, because all those who have looked at it says it contains no new policies, happening less than two weeks before the election? is it too little too late?

>> i don't think that it's too little too late. i look tat in the same way i looked at governor romney 's play in the debate where he tried to portray himself as the moderate who had governed massachusetts, toned down the war talk with regard to iran and some of the middle east positions. i see the same thing going on relative to president obama , and that is he wants to be forward looking and make that pitch to independents. there's been so much attention in this campaign on the fringes, and now in the final two weeks, less than the final two weeks, both campaigns recognize that the power lies in the middle.

>> and there's this "x" factor which, of course, is the economy, and we've all known that will be the key issue. crystal, you're a democrat. when you see a day like yesterday on wall street , the dow dropping more than 200 points, big companies saying their earnings are falling short and they are cutting jobs, that's got to wake you up in the middle of the night .

>> sure, absolutely, and the economic numbers in general are one of the key factors that are going to be going into the decisions of undecided voters , and i would highlight for you there's a jobs number coming out the friday before election day so that could be a pivotal number, but if we look over the course of this campaign, surprisingly the economic numbers haven't really moved the needle. when we had a few tough jobs numbers several months back, the president was holding the lead. now we've had some better numbers coming out in recent weeks and it looks like mitt romney has the momentum so the jobs numbers surprisingly haven't been pivotal thus far.

>> maybe the voters have already factored them in. good to have you both. thank you.

>> thank you.

Goldman book was not meant to be an expose - author

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - The former Goldman Sachs Group Inc vice president who publicly accused the bank of taking advantage of unsuspecting clients said he never intended his book to be an expose of practices at the Wall Street firm.

Preliminary reviews of Greg Smith's "Why I Left Goldman Sachs," which hits bookstores on Monday, have been lacklustre. Critics say the book contains few revelations, given that it had been hyped as a "tell all" look at the investment bank.

Smith, a native of South Africa, told Reuters in a phone interview on Sunday that his book was not meant to be a manual for change on Wall Street. Instead, he said he wanted to shine a light on what was wrong in investment banking and how ordinary people - not the super-wealthy - pay for it.

"People are looking for something sensationalist and expose-like," said Smith, who sold equity derivatives at Goldman. "I would like people to look at it in a thoughtful manner, with an objective sense that Wall Street has do to things that are right.

"I didn't write this book for Wall Street, I just wanted to give the Main Street people a window into what goes on, so they could make their own judgment."

Smith created a furore earlier this year when he resigned from Goldman, saying in a New York Times op-ed column that the firm had engendered a "toxic" culture of treating clients as "muppets" - slang in Britain for idiots - and relieving them of their money.

Smith then promised the book about the bank, building up expectations of new insights about the culture at Goldman.

Grand Central Publishing, a unit of Hachette, planned a print run of 150,000 copies for the book. That is considered a relatively big number for a first run, although many will also be sold through e-book formats.

The publisher declined to say how much it had paid Smith for the book, but media reports said he had received $1.5 million as an upfront payment.

Smith's op-ed piece and his plans to write a book prompted a public relations campaign and internal inquiries at the bank, as it tried to avoid another hit to its image after suffering a barrage of bad publicity in recent years.

"The Goldman Sachs Mr. Smith describes is not one our employees would recognize," a spokesman for the firm said on Sunday. "Mr. Smith has asked for answers, yet he did not respond to our repeated attempts to contact him after his abrupt departure earlier this year."

Goldman has said it looked into Smith's allegations - including the use of "muppet" in emails - and turned up little. The bank says that unless Smith provides specific examples, it cannot check what he is alleging.

Although "Why I Left Goldman Sachs" does not reveal a new scandal at the firm, Smith said he believed his book shines a spotlight on a worsening culture of greed on Wall Street.

Smith, who worked for Goldman in London, said the company would overcharge customers, such as charities or funds managing the pensions of teachers and firemen, or sell them products they did not need and did not understand.

In some cases, Smith said, traders would use knowledge of the clients' business to make easy bets against them.

"When you're trying to make an extra $2 million off a teachers' retirement fund, it doesn't jive at least with the values that I felt," he said. "There is no criminal activity because it's legal. But it should not be allowed, because it's unethical."

Smith, who quit his $500,000-a-year job at the bank, said he would do more to push for change in finance.

"I am in a rush to spread a message and get mainstream people to realize there is a big problem and to be outraged that no one fixed it," Smith said.

"There is a real absence of people within the financial industry trying to advocate for positive reform," he said. "I would like to try to be part of that conversation."

Pope creates first Native American saint

Lucas Jackson / Reuters

By Claudio Lavanga, NBC News

VATICAN CITY - She was known as Lily of the Mohawks, or the Pocahontas of the Catholic Church. But on ?Sunday, Kateri Tekakwitha went down in history as the first Native American saint.

Born more than 300 years ago in the Mohawks village of Ossernion - today Ausierville, forty miles from Albany NY - she was one of seven people canonized by Pope Benedict XVI Sunday in an open-air ceremony held in Saint Peter?s Square.?

One of the remaining six was also American: Mother Marianne Cope, a 19th century Franciscan nun who cared for leprosy patients in Hawaii.

Kateri had a short life ? she died at 24 ? and yet, as for most saints, her devotion to Christianity, sacrifices and ?heroic virtue? were so inspirational that her legacy survived for generations.

Her mother was a Christian Algonquin woman who was captured during a raid and given as wife to a Mohawks tribal member. She was born in the middle of the 17th century, a time of infighting between rival American tribes, deadly diseases and colonization. And a time when French Jesuit priests preached in the area, trying to convert locals to Christianity.

Kateri was only four years old when a smallpox epidemic spread among the Mohawks tribe. Her parents and younger brother were killed and although she survived she was left with permanent scars on her face and an impaired vision. The Jesuit priests were held accountable for having brought the disease, and three of them were slaughtered.

A faithful wearing Indian headress attends a special mass to name seven new saints in St Peter's square at Vatican on Sunday.

And yet, at the age of 20, Kateri swapped the Totem for the Crucifix.

She converted to Catholicism after living close to French Jesuit priests, something her family and village saw as a betrayal for siding up with colonizers. She soon became a pariah in her own tribe after refusing to marry a Mohawk man, and was forced to leave the village to practice freely her new faith. She walked hundreds of miles to Quebec, Canada, to join a community of Christian women, and took a vow of lifetime chastity.

Soon her devotion led to self-inflicted painful penances. She is believed to have walked barefoot in show, for whipping herself bloody with reeds, praying hours in an unheated chapel on her bare knees on a cold stone floor or for sleeping on a bed of thorns.

In the end, the punishing penances are believed to have contributed to the weakening of her health, until her premature death at 24 years old. And it was immediately after her death, the legend goes, that it became clear she would be on her way to sainthood. Her smallpox scars, witnesses claimed, miraculously disappeared minutes after her death.

Although the petition for her canonization was filed in 1884, she was only blessed ? the first step to become a saint ? by Pope John Paul II in 1980.

Video shows an anti-austerity protester jumping the railing at the observation deck atop St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican to set up camp with a sign on the iconic Italian dome. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

The miracle that sealed her sainthood came in 2006, when Jake Finkbonner, then a 5-year old boy from Ferndale, WA, miraculously recovered from a flash-eating bacteria, allegedly through Kateri?s intercession. Jake contracted Necrotizing fasciitis, a potentially deadly infection, after cutting his lip on a baseball field. In a matter of days, his condition became so critical his parents gave him his last rites and discussed donating his organs.

When medical help seemed hopeless, his father Donny, a Catholic member of the native American Lummi tribe, turned to Kateri, already an icon in the local catholic community and the subject of many stories he heard as a child. His congregation prayed Kateri and his mother even placed a small relic, a small piece of Tekakwitha?s wrist bone, on his body. ?Soon after, Jake recovered.

On his website, Jake also remembers the role played by doctors: ?Please don't confuse the issue which is that my survival is a miracle?, he writes.? ?We thank the doctors at Children's Hospital for all that they did to save my life.? I wouldn't be here without them?.

Pope Benedict's XVI former butler took the stand in a Vatican courtroom and admitted to stealing private documents from the papal apartment, but ?Paulo Gabriele said he didn't feel guilty of aggravated theft.? He also said he feels guilty of betraying the pontiff's trust.? NBC's Claudio Lavanga reports.??

The canonization of Kateri has been welcomed with mixed feelings in the 2.5 million-strong Native American community. While most of the 680,000 catholic Native Americans are thrilled to finally have their own saint and icon, others still resent the role of Catholicism during the colonial era and the way it affected the indigenous traditions, culture and customs.?

Some traveled to Rome to see the ceremony.?Dressed in a traditional Indian Squaw brown dress and braided hair, Valery Moran had come from Saskatchewan, Canada, to support her hero. ?I am honored to witness the canonization of our first aboriginal saint?, she told NBC News.

"She is my role model, I named my baby after her. My baby is called Kateri."

Bill Volker, a falconer and sole representative of the Comanche Nation, had mixed feelings about the canonization. "It?s bittersweet, but I am delighted. It?s the right direction after all these years,? he told NBC News in St. Peter?s Square. ?Our relationship with the all churches have not always been the best in the Americas, but I think this heralds a new day for us?.?

The Vatican's complicated saint-making procedure requires that the Vatican certify a "miracle" was performed through the intercession of the candidate ? a medically inexplicable cure that can be directly linked to the prayers offered by the faithful. One miracle is needed for beatification, a second for canonization.?

The five other new saints are: Jacques Berthieu, a 19th century French Jesuit who was killed by rebels in Madagascar, where he had worked as a missionary; Giovanni Battista Piamarta, an Italian who founded a religious order in 1900 and established a Catholic printing and publishing house in his native Brescia; Carmen Salles Y Barangueras, a Spanish nun who founded a religious order to educate children in 1892; and Anna Schaeffer, a 19th century German lay woman who became a model for the sick and suffering after she fell into a boiler and badly burned her legs. The wounds never healed, causing her constant pain.

Case Study: 5 Tips on Using Facebook From a Social Media Expert ...

I love Facebook!I have a major confession to make: Although I write about social media a lot here on GrowSmartBiz, I was not that active on Facebook. I would read as much as I could about using social media for marketing, share what I had learned, and then not follow my own advice.

I have a second confession to make: Facebook intimidated me when it came to my professional life. I was so scared of doing it ?wrong? ? posting content no one would care about or see ? that I ended up doing nothing. Sad, but true.

When September came around, I decided to get serious and start actively using my company?s Facebook page (I am already active on my personal page).? Here are 5 things I have done and learned over the past, nearly-2 months:

1. Play around with timing

I like to quote Dan Zarrella, the Social Media Scientist, a lot, because he takes a very in-depth, numbers-focused look at social media use, including when to post on Facebook, what words to use, etc.

However, I found that what works for everyone else might not work for me.? After quickly looking at the posts that got comments and likes and the most views, I learned that the best time for me to post is between 8am and 11am during the week and around 6pm on the weekend.

2. Personal posts are engaging posts

I thought it would be a great idea to share articles, videos and photos that I found valuable, interesting, and/or entertaining. Not my best idea. I have learned that the more personal the post, the more activity it generates. ?For instance, last week I was without an Internet connection for half a day (Verizon thankfully showed up to fix the problem very quickly!). I posted about how crappy it is to be without Internet when you work from home, and it generated a lot of engagement, which surprised me.

3. Photos definitely get more attention

You hear a lot about how engaging photos and videos are, and I learned that yes, they are. When I share a photo that I take (rather than one that someone else took), I get higher engagement rates.? I just started using videos last week, so the jury is out on what content is most engaging, as well as when to post it (weekday versus weekend).

4. Editorial schedules help ? a lot

I always suggest putting together an editorial schedule, but I didn?t put one together for myself at first, because I wanted to learn what people would find engaging.? Now that I know, I have a partial schedule:

  • Monday: Fun post that has nothing to do with work because I hate Mondays
  • Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday: Share latest GrowSmartBiz blog posts
  • Wednesday: Post something client- or partner-related
  • Friday: Video tip of the week

5. Facebook is not time-consuming

One excuse that small business owners use a lot to justify their non-use of social media is the time commitment. Well, I can say with no uncertainty that this is exactly that?an excuse. If? I added up the amount of time I spend each week deciding what to post on my Facebook page, writing the update, posting, and responding to comments, it would be 30 minutes tops.? That?s 4- 5 minutes a day. Totally doable.

Now that you know how I use Facebook (you can like my company page here), how do you use it? What status updates have you found to be most engaging? If you?re not using Facebook for your business yet, why not?
