Detox Diets: Are They Right For You?

Detox diets, which claim to rid your body of toxins, are based on the philosophy that your body needs help eliminating harmful chemicals that build up from eating highly processed foods. Supporters of these diets profess that once your system is free of toxins, you'll lose weight, have more energy, and experience improved overall health. Most plans restrict your diet to combinations of juice, fruits, vegetables, and herbal supplements for a short period of time.

If you're thinking of starting a detox diet, be sure to do your homework first. Most plans are based only on anecdotal evidence; there is no solid scientific evidence that supports the claims of detox diets or even their necessity. Your liver, kidneys, and colon all remove toxins from your body naturally. Also, initial weight loss is usually just water weight, not fat. Once you return to a normal diet, you may gain the weight back. Unfortunately, overstated or even blatantly false claims are not the only things of which you need to be wary. Some diets are actually detrimental to your overall health. Restricting your calorie and nutrient intakes can lead to fatigue, muscle aches, and headaches. Following such a diet for longer periods of time can have serious and irreversible effects on your immune system and several internal organs.

There are healthy ways to approach detoxing. Instead of going to extremes like prolonged fasting and getting frequent colonics, revamp your diet to include more natural, whole foods that haven't been processed or contaminated with artificial ingredients. Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, low-fat dairy, and whole grains can lead to more energy and improved health. If you're looking to lose weight, remember that slow and steady weight loss is much healthier and more sustainable than any quick fix. Most dieticians and doctors recommend that you eat at least 1,200 calories per day to avoid undernourishment. Pair your new diet with other healthy choices like exercise and drinking lots of water. If you're wary of exercising, start slowly and simply. Running is a great way to ease into physical fitness. All you need is activewear and a good pair of shoes to get started. As you lose weight, you can treat yourself to some new, cute women's sportswear as a reward. For those that abhor water, try squeezing in a bit of fresh lemon juice to give it a flavourful kick without extra sugar and calories.
