Praising children for their personal qualities may backfire

Feb. 27, 2013 ? Praising children, especially those with low self-esteem, for their personal qualities rather than their efforts may make them feel more ashamed when they fail, according to new research published by the American Psychological Association.

"This type of personal praise may backfire. What may seem like common sense can sometimes lead adults astray in their attempts to help children with low self-esteem feel better about themselves," said lead researcher Eddie Brummelman, MS, of Utrecht University in the Netherlands. The study was published online in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General.

The study found that children with low self-esteem often received praise for their personal qualities, and that type of praise can trigger greater feelings of shame from failure and may lead to a diminished sense of self-worth.

In one experiment, 357 parents in the Netherlands, ranging in age from 29 to 66, read six descriptions of hypothetical children -- three with high self-esteem (e.g., "Lisa usually likes the kind of person she is,") and three with low self-esteem (e.g., "Sarah is often unhappy with herself"). The participants were told to write down the praise they would give the child for completing an activity, such as drawing a picture. On average, the parents gave children with low self-esteem more than twice as much praise directed at personal qualities (e.g., "You're a great artist!") than they gave to children with high self-esteem. They also were more likely to praise children with high self-esteem for their efforts. (e.g., "You did a great job drawing!")

"Adults may feel that praising children for their inherent qualities helps combat low self-esteem, but it might convey to children that they are valued as a person only when they succeed," Brummelman said. "When children subsequently fail, they may infer they are unworthy."

A second experiment illustrated that point. The researchers recruited 313 children (54 percent girls) ranging in age from 8 to 13 from five public elementary schools in the Netherlands. Several days before the experiment, the students completed a standard test that measures self-esteem. For the experiment, the children were told they would play an online reaction time game against a student from another school and that a webmaster would be monitoring their performance via the Internet. In reality, the computer controlled the outcome of the game, and the children were divided into winners and losers, including groups that received praise for themselves, praise for their efforts, or no praise.

In the group where the children were praised for their personal qualities, the webmaster wrote, "Wow, you're great!" after the students completed one round of the game, whereas the children whose actions were praised were told, "Wow, you did a great job!" The group that received no praise served as a control. After a second round, the children were told they either won or lost the game, and they completed a survey about their feelings of shame. Children who lost the game experienced a sharp increase in shame if they had been praised for their personal qualities, especially if they had low self-esteem, compared to the other groups.

The researchers theorized that children who are praised for their efforts may not associate their self-worth with success, so failure is viewed as a temporary setback or a lack of effort rather than a flaw in their character. Brummelman said the study results may apply generally to children from most Western countries, including the United States, but the results may be less applicable to Eastern countries, such as China, where adults may use different approaches for praising children.

The differences between praising a person and praising his or her efforts may be very subtle, but those differences can have a big impact on children's self-esteem, said study co-author Brad Bushman, PhD, a communication and psychology professor at The Ohio State University. Therefore, parents and teachers should focus on praising children for their efforts rather than their personal qualities, he added.

"In general, it is better to praise the behavior rather than the individual," Bushman said. "If you praise the individual and he fails, it can cause shame and may inadvertently send the message, 'I am a bad person.'"

Making Money With Affiliate Programs - best seo tips, web hosting ...

Making Money With Affiliate Programs

Affiliate programs can be a very powerful source of income for your website. It offers the best opportunities to start an online business, or to grow and existing one to new levels. They are a great way to monetize your web site and you should definitely take the time to look into them. There are three primary ways to locate affiliate programs for a target website. They are affiliate programs directories, large affiliate networks that provide the platform for dozens or even hundreds of advertisers and the target website itself.?

Although many affiliate programs have terms of service that contain rules against spam, this marketing method has basically proven to attract abuse from spammers. There are literally thousands of programs throughout the internet, covering a variety of different niches. Do you know which affiliate programs you should join and what the most effective marketing methods are.?

Whether you are just looking to make a little extra income every month or you are making or planning to make a full time living in the world of revenue sharing, it is absolutely important for you to get the best information on the best affiliate programs and how to cash in on these top money making opportunities. There are tens of thousands of affiliate programs on the Internet covering just about every product and service you could imagine.

If you are new to promoting affiliate programs and you have completed a fair trial period of the programs you started with, you are then ready to move on. What indeed are affiliate programs and how can you make money using them. They are also known as associate programs or publisher programs. For example some companies will pay 10% commission so if a visitor to your web site clicks on your affiliate link and makes a purchase of $100, you will be paid $10.

These type of programs that pay you per sale are normally called pay per sale affiliate programs. There are many different types of affiliate programs so not all of them will pay you per sale or a percentage of a sale. Something that those who are new to these programs do not know how to do efficiently is find high paying affiliate programs that best complement their web site. However, a much better and quicker method to finding quality programs is to search for affiliate program directories online.?

Some people promoting affiliate programs do not even have a website and they are making thousands of dollars a month. If you are in the affiliate marketing industry you probably know by now that finding great converting offers are not easy to find. Affiliate marketing is an internet based marketing practice in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliates marketing efforts.?

Moreover, it is also the name of the industry where a number of different types of companies and individuals are performing this form of internet marketing, including affiliate networks, affiliate management companies and in house affiliate managers and many others. The methods used include organic search engine optimization, paid search engine marketing, e-mail marketing and in some cases display advertising.?

While search engines, e-mail and website syndication capture much of the attention of online retailers, it carries a much lower profile. Currently the most active sectors for affiliate marketing are the adult, gambling and retail industries. Emerging black sheep are detected and made known to the affiliate marketers with much greater speed and efficiency. Less than one percent of traditional affiliate marketers today use cost per click.?

Cost per click was more common in the early days of affiliate marketing but has diminished in use over time due to click fraud issues very similar to the click fraud issues modern search engines are facing today. Contextual advertising programs such as Google AdSense are not considered in the statistic pertaining to diminished use of cost per click, as it is uncertain if contextual advertising can be considered affiliate marketing.?

Most merchants favor affiliate marketing because in most cases it uses a pay for performance model, meaning that the merchant does not incur a marketing expense unless results are accrued. The increased number of internet businesses and the increased number of people that trust the current technology enough to shop and do business online allows further maturation and strong affiliate marketing.?

Since the emergence of affiliate marketing, there has been little control over affiliate activity. Some programs have a large variety of marketing materials available to you for promoting their products and services. It includes dozens of banners in all shapes and forms, pop ups, mail outs, just about every type of promotional tools available. No matter what type of commission these affiliate programs pay, you still will earn money from them.

FlatIronsCarpet.com ? Home Improvement Ideas To Give Your ...

TIP! Protect the floor in any room you are going to paint. In this way, you can avoid damaging your carpeting and flooring.

Do you see yourself as a home improvement guru like the ones on TV? Do you know the steps for making complex repairs on old or broken appliances? Read this article to get more ideas on projects you might want to consider.

TIP! Do not rush into a home improvement job. Whenever you plan to paint, don?t forget to throw coverings over furniture ahead of time.

Consider padding the edges of sharp furniture if you have small children or clumsy animals. You can even turn this into a stylish do-it-yourself project. You can find cheap corner protectors in any store, or apply foam tape yourself on sharp edges. Another thing you can try is to tape dangerous wiring down that could be harmful to your children.

TIP! If your space is limited, think about purchasing a small, stackable washer and dryer. These combo units are great space savers in apartments and homes with not a lot of extra space.

You may be thinking of adding a traditional wood fireplace to your home. You may want to rethink that. While a traditional fireplace looks great, it is an inefficient heat source. Most of the energy is lost through the chimney. Also, the fire needs a lot of fresh air that will use up the oxygen that is inside your home.

TIP! Try composting to reduce how much garbage you put out. A compost pile is easily started by choosing a spot in your yard, and layering grass cuttings, coffee grounds, veggies, fruit peelings and other organic matter into a pile.

It is not necessary to completely replace your cabinetry in order to freshen your kitchen. It is possible for a bit of paint to make a huge difference. There are quite a few choices when it comes to finishes for your cabinetry. So, do a little research, pick something you love and have fun creating your own unique look!

TIP! Are you trying to sell your property? Projects around the home can easily increase your home?s worth. You could get new appliances for your kitchen and include this expense into the asking price to attract more buyers.

If you aren?t happy with how your home looks, it may be time to consider a renovation. Renovating your home allows you the opportunity to build it exactly as you?d like. A well-planned renovation is far more affordable than purchasing a new home; it also gives you a greater degree of control over your surroundings.

TIP! If you want to spruce up your bathroom or your kitchen without a complete remodel, you should think about new lighting fixtures and accents. It is possible for an electrician to upgrade old-style track lighting for under $1000.

Some people may have some skills with home improvement, but true knowledge takes years of work and experience to gain. There is always more to learn, and your skills can always be improved upon. You will be above the novice level in no time if you heed these tips.

Great North Museum celebrates 200 years of Society of Antiquaries ...

Visitors to the Great North Museum?s current exhibition celebrating one of the oldest antiquarian societies in the UK, The Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne, will find much to surprise and inspire them.

Among the more unusual artefacts, which range from reform Bill notices to ancient stone inscriptions, is a rare Napoleonic animal bone model guillotine carved by French prisoners of war, complete with a bloody guillotine blade, gory bucket and tiny headless prisoner.

This morbidly fascinating is just one of the rarely seen objects plucked from a bewilderingly eclectic collection of a society which this year celebrates its 200th anniversary.

Some of Britain?s most important treasures have survived and thrived under the Society?s watchful gaze ? Hadrian?s Wall, Tynemouth Priory and Newcastle Castle Keep are all examples of their successful efforts at preservation.

The earliest scientific excavations at Hadrian?s Wall were by the Society?s founder member John Hodgson, and all subsequent excavations have involved Society members.

When the Society began in 1813 it was the only institution collecting and preserving archaeological and historical artefacts in the north of England.

These days it continues to promote the history and heritage of the region through a regular programme of monthly lectures, organized walks and visits while its world-class collections of antiquities, coins, bagpipes and archives is housed in museums across the region. Its library comprises over 30,000 antiquarian and contemporary books and journals.

As one might expect from two centuries of cultural accumulation, the collection covers all periods from the Palaeolithic to the present day, but in an area rich in Romano-British remains, it is most famous for its Roman material.

Much of this Roman material is on permanent display in the galleries of the Hancock, but some of the more unusual objects make a rare appearance here. They include the Aemilia Finger-ring, possibly the earliest Christian artefact from Roman Britain which the Society bought in 1991 to stop its purchase by an American Museum.

Other treasures include the earliest fiddle tune book dated 1694, a late 8th century runic inscription from Falstone, a 19th century man-trap and a handwritten note by Abraham Lincoln. An eclelctic line up and the fruits of two centuries of collecting and care for a region?s varied cultural heritage.

Lew moves closer to confirmation with Senate Finance vote ? CNN ...

(CNN) - Jack Lew came one step closer to Senate confirmation as President Barack Obama's second Treasury secretary when the Senate Finance Committee approved his nomination Tuesday.

His nomination now goes to the full Senate where he is expected to be easily confirmed ? especially compared to Obama's nominee for Defense secretary, former Sen. Chuck Hagel, who faced a Republican filibuster of his nomination

But that isn't to say Lew's ride through the committee was easy. He faced tough questions from Republicans about his leadership of a Citigroup bank unit which made bets against the housing market ahead of that sector's collapse, which drove the 2008 financial crisis, as well as an investment program for employees that he participated in and was based in the Cayman Islands. He has also come under scrutiny for receiving a $900,000 bonus while taxpayers were bailing out the bank, and a more recently reported bonus upon leaving New York University where he was executive vice president.

Lew has said he did not make investment decisions at Citigroup and that he paid all taxes on the investment, which he sold when leaving the company for a loss.

But Sen. Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican and one of Lew's dissenters, said "Mr. Lew is very good at getting paid by taxpayer supported institutions"

"Mr. Lew's eagerness and skill at obtaining bonuses, severance payments and perks raise questions about whether he appreciates who pays the bill," Grassley said.

The ranking Republican on the committee, Sen. Orrin Hatch, and three other Republicans - Sens. Johnny Isakson of Georgia, Rob Portman of Ohio and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania - joined all 14 Democrats on the panel voting in favor of Lew. Five Republicans cast the only votes against Lew: Grassley, Mike Crapo of Idaho, Pat Roberts of Kansas, Michael Enzi of Wyoming, and John Cornyn of Texas.

Lew, 57, was Obama's chief of staff for approximately a year and was nominated in January to succeed Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner.

His nomination heads to the floor as Congress and the White House are staring down forced federal spending cuts which kick in at the end of the week. There appears to be little chance of passing a plan before then to avert them, and each side is placing the blame squarely on the other.

Samsung confirms Galaxy S IV launch on March 14th in NYC

It was true. And then it wasn't. Now, here at MWC in Barcelona, Samsung has finally confirmed its rumored March 14th launch event for the much-anticipated Galaxy S IV. The smartphone giant's latest flagship is set to debut in New York City, apparently by popular demand. "We introduced the Galaxy S III in London last year," Samsung Electronics' mobile division chief JK Shin told Edaily news. "This time we changed the Venue (to New York)... as we were bombarded with requests from US mobile carriers to unveil the Galaxy S IV in the country." As with any such announcement, details are sparse at best, so we'll need to wait a few more weeks before confirming specs and appearance for the Galaxy S III successor. But, as always, you're welcome to shout out your best guesses in the comments.

Berkshire Theatre and Film Highlights

Kristen van Ginhoven of WAM.

Kristen van Ginhoven of WAM.

Of course, we are especially interested in the performances and film screenings?a special women-only edition of Made in the Berkshires, with performances by Sally-Jane Heit, Susan Merrill and Joy Spivak; a new show from Alison Larkin, Alison Larkin Live!, at the Unicorn; a Festival /BIFF screening of the new Dutch film Water Children; a special International Women?s Day film screening of Sweet Dreams, featuring local filmmaker Rob Fruchtman and Blue Marble Ice Cream founder Jennifer Dundas; and a screening of sections of the documentary film Half the Sky at the Mahaiwe, with a community conversation on women?s human rights moderated by Caroline Wheeler of Sisters for Peace and Kristen Van Ginhoven of WAM Theater.

Jennifer Browdy de Hernandez

Festival director Jennifer Browdy de Hernandez, a professor of comparative literature and gender studies at Bard College at Simon?s Rock, founded the event to give more women the opportunity to share their writing with local audiences.

?Research has shown that while boys and men tend to over-estimate their own talents and abilities, girls and women tend to second-guess themselves or have such high standards for themselves that they hesitate to speak up or take the limelight,? Browdy de Hernandez says.

?The ethos of this Festival is supportive and inclusive?we?re not so much about big names as about opening up multiple platforms for talented girls and women to share their writing and gain confidence in their own abilities.?

Diane Patrick

The 2013 Festival does feature a few women of national renown, such as the writing guru Julia Cameron, author of The Artist?s Way and many other books, who will be speaking at Kripalu on March 7, and First Lady of Massachusetts Diane Patrick, who will be speaking about women?s empowerment at Bard College at Simon?s Rock on March 16.

But there will also be spaces opened for student writers, older writers, and immigrant writers, many of whom will be sharing their work in public for the first time.

Students from Monument Mountain Regional High School in Great Barrington will be sharing their writing at the Guthrie Center on March 11 under the leadership of faculty member Lisken Van Pelt Dus.? And the Railroad Street Youth Project will sponsor a poetry workshop for teens led by two teenage women writers on March 14.

Sonia Pilcer will return with her popular panel of older women writers, ?Women of a Certain Age,? on March 2 at the Mason Library in Great Barrington.? The Mason Library will also host Sondra Zeidenstein, octagenarian poet and publisher of Chicory Blue Press, a press dedicated exclusively to the work of women over 70, for a talk on March 9 on ?Women, Creativity and Aging.?

Yuko Takaya

The Berkshire Immigrant Center is sponsoring a special event called ?Coming to America,? at Williams College on March 6, which will give four Berkshire immigrant women from different countries a chance to share their written autobiographical stories.? There will also be a bilingual panel on March 5 at Bard College at Simon?s Rock entitled Cuatro mujeres, Cuatro generos / Four Women, Four Genres, featuring student presenters reading and discussing the work of four Latin American women writers.

In addition, any Berkshire woman writer is welcome to enter the 2013 Essay Contest, sponsored by Michelle Gillett and Nina Ryan, with special guest judge Katherine Bouton of The New York Times. ?The topic is ?masculinity,? and the postmark deadline is January 28.

A special feature of the Festival is the International Women?s Day observance, which has been held annually at Bard College at Simon?s Rock since 2002.

Sweet Dreams will be screened on International Women's Day 2013.

Sweet Dreams will be screened on International Women?s Day 2013.

This year?s IWD event, co-sponsored by the Berkshire Human Rights Speaker series, will offer a screening of the new documentary film Sweet Dreams, about the partnership between a dynamic women?s drumming ensemble in Rwanda and the founders of the Brooklyn-based Blue Marble Ice Cream, which brought the first ice cream shop ever to Rwanda.? A talk-back with filmmaker Rob Fruchtman and Blue Marble founder and film star Jennifer Dundas will follow the screening, and the event will end with an Ice Cream Social featuring Blue Marble Ice Cream.

Protest votes raise uncertainty in close Italy election

ROME (Reuters) - Polls in Italy opened for the second and final day of voting on Monday, with a surge in protest votes increasing fears of an unclear outcome that could hamper economic reforms.

"I'm sick of the scandals and the stealing," said Paolo Gentile, a 49-year-old lawyer from Rome who said he had voted for the 5-Star Movement, an anti-establishment group set to make a huge impact at this, its first general election.

"We need some young, new people in parliament, not the old parties that are totally discredited."

Opinion polls give the center-left coalition led by former Industry Minister Pier Luigi Bersani a narrow lead but the race has been thrown open by the prospect of a huge protest vote - most of it going to 5-Star - against austerity and a wave of corporate and political scandals.

A bitter campaign, fought largely over economic issues, has been closely watched by financial markets, still wary after the debt crisis that took the whole euro zone close to disaster and brought technocrat prime minister Mario Monti to office in 2011.

For the euro zone, the stakes are high. Italy is the third largest economy in the 17-member bloc and the prospect of political stalemate could reawaken the threat of dangerous market instability.

"There are similarities between the Italian elections and last year's ones in Greece, in that pro-euro parties are losing ground in favor of populist forces," said Mizuho chief economist Riccardo Barbieri.

"An angry and confused public opinion does not see the benefits of fiscal austerity and does not trust established political parties."

Voting ends at 3 p.m. (1400 GMT), with the first exit polls due shortly afterwards. Projections based on the vote count will be issued through the afternoon and the final result should be known late on Monday or early Tuesday.

Italian bond markets remained sanguine on Monday morning, quickly reversing modest early losses. Later on Monday Italy will offer 4.25 billion euros of bonds in a further test of market sentiment.

The result is likely to be the most fragmented in decades, with the old left-right division disrupted by the rise of 5-Star, led by comic Beppe Grillo, and by the decision by Monti to run at the head of a centrist bloc.

"It will be a vote of protest, maybe of revolt," said Corriere della Sera, Italy's largest newspaper, on Monday.

It is unclear how Grillo's rise will influence the result, with some pollsters saying it increases the chances of a clear win for the center-left, led by Bersani's Democratic Party (PD), because 5-Star is taking votes mainly from Berlusconi.

After the first day of voting on Sunday about 54 percent of voters had cast their ballots, a sharp fall on the level of 62.5 percent seen at the same stage in the last election in 2008.

Bad weather hampered the turnout in Italy's first post-war election to be held in winter.

The 5-Star Movement, backed by a frustrated younger generation increasingly shut out of full-time jobs, could challenge former premier Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PDL) party as Italy's second largest political force.

"Come on, it isn't over yet," was Monday's front page headline in Il Giornale daily, owned by Berlusconi's brother, a call to arms to voters not to give up.

The 76 year-old Berlusconi has pledged sweeping tax cuts and echoed Grillo's attacks on Monti, Germany and the euro in a media blitz that has halved the lead of the center-left since the start of the year.

Support for Monti's centrist coalition meanwhile has faded and he appears set to trail well behind the main parties.

SENATE RACE

Monti helped save Italy from a mounting debt crisis when he replaced a discredited Berlusconi in November 2011, but with the economy in its longest recession for 20 years analysts fear an electoral stalemate could spark renewed market pressure.

"I voted for the PD because a PD win is the only way to have a stable government and we need stability or we will end up like Greece," said Viola Rossi, an 80 year-old pensioner from Rome.

Whatever government emerges will inherit an economy that has been largely stagnant for much of the past two decades and problems ranging from record youth unemployment to a dysfunctional justice system and a bloated public sector.

The credibility of the political system has been hit by corruption scandals and criminal investigations affecting state-controlled defence group Finmeccanica and Italy's third-largest bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena.

If Bersani wins, it is far from clear that he will be able to control both houses of parliament and form a stable government capable of lasting a full five-year term.

Italy's electoral laws guarantee a strong majority in the lower house to the party or coalition that wins the biggest share of the overall national vote.

However the Senate, elected on a region-by-region basis, is more complicated and the result could turn on a handful of regions where results are too close to call, including Lombardy in the rich industrial north and the southern island of Sicily.

Many politicians and analysts believe Bersani and Monti will end up in an alliance after the vote, despite a number of spiky exchanges during the campaign and Monti's insistence that he will not join forces with Bersani's leftist allies.

For his part, Bersani, who has pledged to maintain the broad reform course set by Monti while doing more to help growth, says he would seek support from other parties and would be ready to offer the former European commissioner a job in his government.

Kobe scores 40, Lakers hold off Blazers 111-107

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Back on the court after days of mourning, the Los Angeles Lakers grinded out a gritty win thanks to a vintage performance from their biggest star.

Kobe Bryant scored 40 points, Dwight Howard had 19 points and 16 rebounds, and Los Angeles capped a trying week with a 111-107 victory over the slumping Portland Trail Blazers on Friday night.

Hours after longtime Lakers owner Jerry Buss was buried, and a day after a moving memorial service punctuated by eulogies from Bryant and other franchise greats, the team got back to basketball with a much-needed victory at Staples Center.

"It's been a tough week," Howard acknowledged. "But as a team and a city and an organization, we're coming together. And it's great. We need all the support we can get from our fans, and the Buss family needs the support from us. So we're getting there. You could see the effort and emotion that we have on the court."

During his eulogy, Bryant publicly challenged his teammates in the audience to win a championship in Buss' memory ? even though the Lakers are 3? games behind Houston for the final Western Conference playoff spot with 26 games remaining.

"Kobe said what he had to say. But as a team, we understand how important the second half of the season is for us and what we want to accomplish," Howard said. "We've had a lot of ups and downs this year, and we want to do whatever we can to get this right. Kobe and myself understand that. It starts with me and him, as far as being on the same page. And on defense, it starts with me."

Bryant scored 11 points in the final 5? minutes as the Lakers won for the seventh time in 10 games.

Antawn Jamison had 16 points off the bench, helping to hand Portland its season-worst seventh straight loss. The Trail Blazers have lost five consecutive road games and 10 of their last 11 away from the Rose Garden, leaving them 11th in the conference standings.

Portland led 82-80 after three quarters, and the lead changed hands 11 times before Steve Nash's layup gave the Lakers a 107-105 lead with 1:44 to play. Bryant fumbled the ball out of bounds on the Lakers' next possession, but the Blazers couldn't capitalize and Bryant closed it out with four free throws in the final 13 seconds.

Bryant finished 9 for 9 from the line and 15 of 23 from the floor, but still called it "somewhat of an off-shooting night."

"I had to be a little bit more assertive ? but at the same time make plays for my team," said Bryant, who committed five turnovers. "I've been having off-shooting nights for the last month. We just need to continue to focus and approach every game like it's a playoff game."

Howard, looking for his sixth rebounding title in seven seasons, came in averaging an NBA-best and career-high 11.8 boards per game. The Lakers are 19-12 when he gets double digits in rebounds, and 11 of those losses have come on nights when he grabbed 14 or more. They wasted 26 boards in a home loss to Denver on Jan. 6, and 20 in a Dec. 11 loss at Cleveland.

"I think a lot of us are playing a lot harder. I know for myself, I'm in better shape now and I'm able to do more. So that's going to get better," Howard said. "I think I have to really come out every night with the same intensity and the same effort. I have to do a better job of playing hard, and I'm going to try."

J.J. Hickson had 22 points and 11 rebounds for Portland, and Nicolas Batum also scored 22. Two-time All-Star LaMarcus Aldridge finished with 15 points in 34 foul-plagued minutes after picking up his fifth personal with 8 minutes remaining.

Damian Lillard added 19 points. All of Portland's starters scored in double figures, while the bench produced just 14.

Hickson, who came in fifth in the NBA with a 56.5 field goal percentage, shot 8 for 10 in the first half and had 16 points ? including a 20-footer with 2.6 seconds on the clock to give the Blazers a 55-53 lead at the break.

"I like the way our team fought," Portland coach Terry Stotts said. "We've had a rough stretch, but we came out and played aggressively. We pushed the tempo and did a lot of good things out there. I thought we played well enough to win the game, but unfortunately we didn't."

NOTES: The Lakers (27-29) haven't been under .500 this deep into a season since 1993-94, when they were 21-35 after 56 games and finished 33-49. That was the first of only two times that the team didn't make the playoffs during Buss' term as owner, which began in 1979-80. ... The Lakers are 5-13 when Bryant commits five or more turnovers. ... Bryant hit a 3-pointer in the first quarter that snapped his string of 16 consecutive misses from behind the arc. He is only 2 for 39 since Jan. 20, when he misfired on his last two attempts. "I didn't realize I was shooting so poorly from the 3," Bryant said. "It was one of those things where I was facilitating and taking a 3 here and there, a 3 here and there. All of a sudden, it adds up. It just irked me it's not going down." ... Hickson was 11 for 15 from the field, extending his club-record streak to 18 consecutive games of shooting 50 percent or better. ... No Lakers player scored 30 or more points in the team's previous 17 games since Jan. 15, when Bryant and Howard each had 31 in a 104-88 home win against Milwaukee. ... The Blazers haven't lost more than seven straight games in the same season since 2005-06, when they dropped their final eight and 19 of their last 20. They begin a four-game homestand Sunday against the Celtics, who have beaten Portland six straight times and won 13 of the past 14 meetings. ... The Blazers have lost six straight road games against the Lakers, and are 5-20 against them at Staples Center since the arena opened in 1999-00.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 official: 1.6GHz Exynos 4 Quad, 1280 x 800 display, HSPA+ 21, Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2

Samsung Galaxy Note 80 official 16GHz Exynos 4 Quad, 1280 x 800 display, S Penoptimized Flipboard app, HSPA 21, Android Jelly Bean

We knew another Note was coming. After all, Samsung Mobile head JK Shin confirmed the news back in January. But here at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the tablet's finally been made official. If you haven't already inferred from its name, Samsung's latest S Pen entry boasts an 8-inch 1,280 x 800 TFT display. That puts it on par with the Note 10.1's resolution, although here users will obviously benefit from a more eye-pleasing pixel density (189ppi) and smaller 210.8mm x 135.9mm x 7.95mm (8.3 x 5.4 x 0.31 inches) footprint. Beneath that love it or hate it sealed plastic chassis, lies the company's Exynos 4 Quad processor clocked at 1.6GHz and paired with 2GB RAM, radios for WiFi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS, GLONASS and HSPA+ 21 (850/900/1900/2100MHz), up to 32GB of internal storage (microSD expansion available), in addition to a 4,600mAh battery. And, as with most Android products rolling out as of late, the Note 8.0 will ship with version 4.1.2 of Jelly Bean onboard -- skinned with the requisite TouchWiz UX.

My GF's son-who is going to school in PA-borrowed a room-mate's car to drive home and surprise his GF for Valentine's Day. The car he drove is a decked-out ricer...heavy tint on the windows, loud blatty muffler, NO2 system, and neon blue wheels. While traveling through VA, he was pulled over by a State Trooper-he was not speeding-and given three tickets. One ticket was for the level of tint-which was illegal in VA, but not Missouri where his roomie is from, one for the muffler-again, illegal in VA but not MO, and having a radar detector-which is illegal in VA. I can understand getting the ticket for the radar detector, but don't see the reason why he got tickets for the windows and muffler. Especially since he was just driving through the state and the car was not his, and that all these things are legal in MO where the car is from. Like I said earlier, he was not speeding, and was not operating the car in any fashion that would be considered reckless. One good thing is that the AH Trooper didn't notice the NO2 buttons, and if he had, he'd have gotten ticketed for that as well...again, that is legal in MO but not in VA.
My questions are as follows:
Was it legal for the Trooper to ticket him for the tint and muffler since those items are legal in the state where the car is registered?
Do these infractions carry any points violations, or do they only carry a fine?
Is it worth him taking a day off from school to come fight the tickets? The total fine for all three is $181.00-including a BS "processing fee" of $51.00.
If he does not pay the fines, is there any danger of him losing his license? I know both VA and SC(where he resides)are part of the Driver's License Compact and report traffic violations to one another. If the fines do not get paid, will a SC Trooper knock on his door one day or arrest him on a VA bench warrant if he were to get pulled over?
He's a starving student, and doesn't have that kind of money right now. It's a damn shame that he was made an example of...especially since it wasn't even his car. I know this kid, and you could not hope to meet a nicer and more respectful young man.
Note to self...stay the hell out of VA.

General terms:

a. He is the Captain of the 'ship'.

b. He can ask his friend to have the tint removed and show proof to the Court.

c. He may be able to do community service in lieu of a fine.

d. VA will not be interested in what MO does or does not do.

e. I don't hear any legal defense.

f. If he FTA's, VA may suspend his operating privelage and notify MO who will/may suspend his DL, which means he will have to get a clearance letter from VA and do whatever is required to be reinstated in MO.

g. Go the website AVVO and ask your legal question there, than you will have a bonafide answer.

Pat the tickets. Had a buddy in college in SC who forgot to pay a Florida ticket. Next time he tried to renew his license, it had been suspended! Paid the Florida ticket and got his license back but it was a hassle.

Dark tint and loud pipes are illigal in most states. In Ma. they usually look the other way on the pipes IF you are not trying to make noise. The tint is pretty strictly enforced. Personally I find it a lot safer at an intersection when I can make eye contact and know the other guy is looking, even if I have the right of way.

You need to obey the law everywhere you are regardless of what it is elsewhere. I suspect you will find that the tickets are valid regardless of MO law.

This is NOT the answer.

This is NOT the answer.

Sure it is.

Some laws say "shall not operate on the highways of...", some say "shall not be registered in..."

Whether your tint or muffler is legal will depend on how the laws in the state you are in are written.

In Missouri tinting of the driver or passenger side windows is limited to no less than 35%, no additional tinting allowed on the windshield. Unless you have a medical permit for darker.
Virginia allows no less than 50%.
If the MO tint on that car is at the legal limit, how did the trooper determine it was too dark?

I suspect the window tint and exhaust were both non-factory items. I would not expect a driver to be ticketed for having factory-standard items installed on a car. Once somebody starts putting after-market stuff on a car, different story.

Well i can tell you for sure because i went through this a couple of years ago that the cop shouldn't have wrote him for the windows. I got myself a lawyer and it was addressed under the interstate commerce act. Needless to say i won. Sure it would have been cheaper to just pay the fines but i am not one to give in if i think i am right regardless of the cost.

Edit.
My windows probably were not as dark as i am thinking a kids car would be.

Unless it has changed
HOW DARK CAN WINDOW TINT BE IN VIRGINIA? Virginia Window Tint Law
Virginia Tint Law Enacted: 1999

Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In Virginia, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.
? Windshield Non-reflective tint is allowed along the top of the windshield above the manufacturer's AS-1 line.
? Front Side Windows Must allow more than 50% of light in.
? Back Side Windows Must allow more than 35% of light in.
? Rear Window Must allow more than 35% of light in.
