KIEV, Ukraine (AP) -Two weeks ago, long before either team had earned a spot in the final, Spain had a chance to eliminate Italy from the European Championship.
In the final round of group matches, Spain played Croatia knowing that a 2-2 draw would send both teams to the quarterfinals - and send Italy home early for the third straight time at a major championship.
It didn't happen, and now it is Italy that will be trying to stop Spain from winning its third straight major championship on Sunday at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev.
"We'll never regret not having drawn with Croatia to eliminate Italy," Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said. "That wouldn't have been good for the sport."
Xavi Hernandez, the man in the middle of Spain's attack, said Saturday that the world champions did what they were supposed to do against Croatia: win the match and the group.
"We did our job in the group stage despite all the speculation about a 2-2 draw leaving Italy out," Xavi said. "We'll never remember that, win or lose tomorrow, we could have eliminated Italy already."
The Italians will head into Sunday's match as an unexpected finalist but looking very much like the kind of team that can finally knock Spain off its perch at the top of the football world.
In their opening Group C match, Italy held the defending champions to a 1-1 draw. Antonio Di Natale scored first, but Cesc Fabregas equalized in a game in which the Azzurri looked more similar to Spain than to the stereotype of a defensive Italian team.
"Italy and ourselves have come through a similar route and now we have to reach the maximum level that a final will require," Del Bosque said. "In the group stage match, they were possibly better than us in the first half. They were the team that caused us the most problems."
Even if the route was similar, Italy's path may have been more impressive.
They played needing a win against Ireland, at the same time that Spain turned in a 1-0 victory over the Croats on June 18, putting both through. The Italians then struggled to finish against England in the quarterfinals but still advanced by winning a penalty shootout after a 0-0 draw.
It wasn't until the semifinals against Germany that Italy really showed its strength, controlling play throughout the match and holding on to beat the three-time champions 2-1 with two goals from striker Mario Balotelli.
"I am convinced that a team needs to have a specific system and style of play. He was part of this strategy," Italy coach Cesare Prandelli said of Balotelli. "He made lots of forward runs, he was a target up front when we had to counterattack, and therefore he played a great match."
The Spanish had less trouble against France in the quarterfinals, but their finishing then seemed to go fishing for the semifinal match against Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal. Spain needed penalties to get through that one.
"Sure, our attack may not have been as aesthetically pleasing to watch as we would have liked, but we were always in control of all of our matches," Del Bosque said.
So heading into Sunday's match, it's the Italians who are scoring more goals, leaving the Spanish to worry about the back line when the superstar midfield loses the ball.
If the superstar midfield, which has been the key to Spain's titles at Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup, does lose the ball.
"(Our defensive) work has been fundamental to our game plan, especially in the last few games where our back line was always there when it needed to be," Spain defender Sergio Ramos said. "We're proud that our work is being valued and hopefully we don't concede a goal in the final because that would be the ultimate compliment to our work."

Opinion: Balotelli challenging minds with his feet
KIEV, Ukraine (AP) - The ignoramus who scrawled "non sei un vero italiano, sei un africano nero'' - "You are not a true Italian, you are a black African'' - on a wall near the San Siro stadium in Milan. Did he, despite himself, leap off his sofa in delight when Mario Balotelli thumped home his goal for Italy with a powerful nod of his shaven black head and put their country into the final of Europe's top soccer tournament?
CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's president-elect plans Friday to address thousands who have camped out in Cairo's Tahrir Square to demonstrate against the military's hold on power despite the election of a new civilian leader, a nod to the protesters who supported his bid for leadership.
Mohammed Morsi of the Islamist group, the Muslim Brotherhood, is the first president to be elected after the uprising that forced longtime leader Hosni Mubarak to step down. But he is already facing a serious challenge after the ruling generals who oversee the transition took a series of decisions that undermine the powers of his office before his swearing-in.
Morsi's spokesman, Yasser Ali, said the president-elect wants to stand with the thousands who have camped out in the square for over a week to express concern about the power grabs.
"He wants to confirm that people are the source of his power," Ali said. "He wants to show unity with his people over issues of the transition, which is now ending."
The ruling generals said they will transfer power to an elected president by July 1. But days before Morsi was declared winner, they gave themselves sweeping powers that undercut the authority of the president. The generals' constitutional declaration also designated them the country's legislature, following a court decision that dissolved the country's first freely elected parliament that was dominated by Islamists.
Protesters took to the streets, demanding that the generals rescind the declaration and reinstate the parliament.
Morsi's first test in his power struggle with the generals will be the venue of his oath-taking ceremony.
He will be sworn in before a high court Saturday. Traditionally, presidents are to be sworn in before parliament. For many of the protesters, Morsi's swearing-in before the court, as dictated by the generals' constitutional declaration, was a concession to the military.
"We demand from the president of the republic that he calls off the constitutional declaration, reinstate the parliament as it was, and to stand here among us to be sworn in and swear he has all his powers," said a preacher in the square who addressed the crowd before Morsi arrived.
"From now on, we make our demands to the president of the republic, not the military council. The military council no longer rules Egypt."
Ali said Morsi's agreement to take oath before the court does not mean the battle to regain his powers is over.
"This is an affirmation that (Morsi) respects the law and constitution," he said. "It doesn't mean approval of the declaration."
Speaking to newspapers editors Thursday, Morsi said there are still discussions on how to on how to implement the law dissolving the parliament. The court decision declared a third of the elected seats unconstitutional and Brotherhood lawyers argue it is still possible to only dissolve that third. Morsi urged patience.
Morsi, the first elected Islamist leader of an Arab country, is also trying to reach out to many of the liberal and secular forces that were behind the uprising. They, along with Egypt's Coptic Christian minority, fear Morsi would work to establish a religious state. Most of those powers have stayed out of the protest in Tahrir.
However, the prominent April 6 movement took part in the square protest.
"We should be patient with one another, two, three or four years, and try to live together in this atmosphere of freedom and democracy after the revolution," he told the editors, according to comments published in the state-run Al-Ahram daily. "This is definitely a better atmosphere than before. But there are big challenges."
Before heading to Tahrir, Morsi prayed in Al-Azhar mosque. Al-Azhar is the Sunni world's most prestigious learning institution, and represents moderate Islam. Morsi's visit there is an acknowledgement of respect to the institution.
Protesters in the square chanted, "The military council should leave tonight," and, "The president takes the oath in the square."
Health interventions for clergy must counteract need to put others firstPublic release date: 28-Jun-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

DURHAM, N.C. -- Clergy's practice of putting others first can be detrimental to their own health, say researchers at Duke University.
Pastors have been found to have higher-than-average rates of chronic disease and depression. But it may be difficult to get pastors to seek care because they typically default to caring for others first.
Duke researchers have been trying to design health programs that will be more effective for clergy, given these tendencies.
"Clergy recognize the importance of caring for themselves, but doing so takes a back seat to fulfilling their vocational responsibilities, which are tantamount to caring for an entire community," said Rae Jean Proeschold-Bell, research director of the Clergy Health Initiative at Duke Divinity School and assistant research professor at the Duke Global Health Institute.
"Many pastors equate self-care with selfishness," Proeschold-Bell said. "They feel they need permission to take the time to attend to their health. A health intervention aimed at clergy must address this tendency head-on."
Her group's latest study, published June 13 in the Journal of Prevention & Intervention in the Community, underscores the need to place preventive care programs for clergy in the context of their beliefs, congregational expectations and church polity. The findings are drawn from in-depth focus group data from 88 United Methodist clergy in North Carolina. Duke maintains a historic affiliation with the United Methodist Church.
To succeed, health intervention programs must overcome a variety of potential barriers named by clergy: cost, distance, pastors' unpredictable work schedules and fear that mental health issues will be discovered and stigmatized by congregants and supervisors.
The focus group clergy also emphasized that any health intervention must demonstrate the connection between physical, mental and spiritual health.
Research by the Duke Clergy Health Initiative has found that compared to other North Carolinians, United Methodist clergy have higher-than-average rates of obesity (40 percent versus 29 percent), as well as higher rates of diabetes, asthma, arthritis and hypertension. They also exhibit symptoms of depression at nearly double the national average: 10.5 percent vs. 5.5 percent.
Yet, despite reporting higher rates of chronic disease, these clergy were more likely to say their health did not affect their ability to do their work.
"Clergy perceive themselves to be much healthier than they actually are," said Proeschold-Bell. "They don't always recognize that they need help. That makes it all the more important that we design health interventions that pastors are likely to accept."
The Duke Clergy Health Initiative is testing this idea through a multi-year health intervention called Spirited Life.
More than 60 percent of the United Methodist clergy in North Carolina are currently enrolled in the program, through which they receive two years of intervention services. The program is theologically grounded and is the first study to combine weight loss and stress management interventions into a single program lasting more than 12 months.

Do you have a fear of bats? Bats should be considered human allies, rather than the subject of persecution from exaggerated fear. To learn the truth about bats, their value in pest control, and how installing a bat house benefits you, read on?
In the U.S. alone tens of thousands of illnesses (and deaths) are reported each year from diseases spread by insect vectors. West Nile Virus (WNV) and Encephalitis are two diseases spread by mosquitoes that can affect humans, pets, livestock, and wild animals. According to the December 2011 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), California leads the U.S. with 154 reported WNV cases, resulting in 8 deaths. Bat rabies accounts for approximately one human death per year in the entire U.S.
Bats can be valuable allies as Nature?s insect pest control. First, let?s dispel a few myths about bats. They are not birds, nor are they rodents. They are fur-bearing, milk producing mammals, like us. They play a key role in maintaining balance in our eco-system by keeping insect populations in check. They are nature?s most effective, least expensive, natural pest control. One bat house, that holds 100 Little Brown bats, can potentially consume 100,000 insects per hour! Mexican Free-tailed bats eat hundreds of tons of moth pests (weekly) and a colony of Big Browns can consume tens of millions of cucumber beetle larva in a season. One million bats can consume almost 7 tons of insects in a year. Bats can save farmers and foresters billions of dollars annually. Not only do they deserve our protection, urgent and effective efforts towards their conservation is critical, not only for the bats, but for our own livelihood.
Why is this matter so urgent? Bats now rank as North America?s most rapidly declining and endangered land mammal. A new disease has entered their world, killing more than one million bats in just five years. The disease is White-nose Syndrome (WNS), a fungus that has destroyed entire populations of bats living in one area. People cannot contract the disease, but can spread it by contaminating areas where the animals live. WNS is now documented in 19 U.S. states and 4 Canadian provinces, and spreading. Currently, 25 species of hibernating bats in the U.S. are faced with possible extinction. Although bats are long-lived, they only have one pup a year. Scientists predict it is unlikely that their populations will recover.
How can we help? Educate others about the benefits of bats and install a bat house for a natural solution to insect pest control. Encourage legislators to allocate funding towards understanding and fighting WNS. Adhere to cave advisories and closures to help prevent transmission of WNS. Encourage bats to live in your own yard/garden (and not in your attic) by putting up a bat house. Make sure all bats have vacated the building before installing screens to prevent them from entering. Eliminate use of toxic pesticides with organic pest control. Pesticides kill many wild animals, including birds and bats directly and indirectly by consuming the seeds or insects that come into contact with the pesticide. Bat houses are just one of many natural pest control solutions available today. By recognizing that these wild animals as a valuable and vital component in the eco-system serving as Nature?s solution to insect pest control, and that learning how to coexist rather than fear them, is a healthier perspective. Note: Bats are wild animals and it is illegal and unethical to keep them in captivity. If you find a bat on the ground, do not touch it and notify a local wildlife rehabilitator immediately.

Screenwriter and essayist Nora Ephron died Tuesday at the age of 71 following a private battle with leukemia, her son Jacob Bernstein confirmed to the New York Times. Google has announced Jelly Bean, the next version of the Android operating system, at its?I/O conference in San Francisco.?The software, also known as Android 4.1,?is faster and introduces a number of useful new functions: offline voice, more powerful notifications, and a predictive search that gives you answers before you ask.
After a short preamble in which Google's?Hugo Barra announced that the company was activating a million devices a day, they began going over the major features being added to the OS. Here they are in convenient bullet form:
"Project Butter" is the internal name for the effort to make Android more responsive. Laggy controls and delay in apps launching have been common complaints. The team did all kinds of optimizations and made a new tool that ramps up the CPU when it detects you're doing something on-screen. Using a high-speed camera, they recorded the difference between the old and new systems, and it's striking.
The camera has a new interface, and lets you get over to your latest shots super-easily. And deleting photos is quick ? you just slide them up and off the screen. Looks really easy to do.
The homescreen is more elastic, allowing for nice resizable widgets that automatically reorganize the screen around them. A custom home screen is something Android and Windows Phone have been pushing hard?and which iOS conspicuously lacks.
NFC, the short-range wireless Google has been hyping (and which is rumored to be on the next iPhone as well), can now be used to share media or to sync up accessories quickly and easily.
Notifications have become very rich: icons, contact photos, more content, and some now actually can expand to show more info. If you miss a call, you can call back or send a text right from the notification, or if a new song comes on, you can favorite or skip it.
Voice recognition has been moved offline, which is a very significant development. With or without a connection, you can dictate your emails or search terms. Right now it's only available in English, but they're rolling out more languages soon.
A new Siri-like voice search gives rich search results quickly, with map snippets, media, and Knowledge graph data. "Show me pictures of pygmy marmosets," for example:
Google Now, a predictive search engine, that (if you let it, they were careful to point out) uses your search history and location to determine what you might search for, and provides that preemptively. Drive to work every day around 8:30? Google automatically gives you traffic and route data. Take the train? It pre-loads train arrival times and other stuff. Getting on a plane? If you've searched for that flight, it'll track the flight in real time and advise you of gate changes and so on.
It'll also tell you about games and teams you're watching. On a slightly creepy note, the presenter explained: "You don't need to set up your favorite teams. You've already done that." By searching, naturally.
Maps has gotten a medium-size update, with a cool new "Compass mode" that lets you navigate street view by looking around with your phone in hand. And you can now download maps for offline use by city and neighborhood instead of just in square chunks.
A few more minor features: App updates are more efficient, only delivering the part that needs updating. The OS is now more friendly to blind users, who can use voice and braille to navigate. Media format input and output has been improved (multichannel audio, better codec detection).
Overall it's quite a significant update, and should be arriving to the Nexus series of phones starting in mid-July. When will other phones get it? Hard to say, but Google noted that they've started a new program with hardware manufacturers that should let them make the latest version of Android available more quickly on their devices. So it may not be for a little while yet, especially?considering how?many devices have yet to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich, the last version.?Hopefully the wait will be shorter than it has been before.
You can see a few of the features in action in this video showing off the new Nexus 7 tablet.
More?information and further discussion of the new features can be found at Google's Jelly Bean key features page.

Adding fuel to the iTunes make-over fire, new rumors are making the rounds that suggest Apple's do-over will include much better iCloud integration. Which, of course, makes the kind of sense that does.
WASHINGTON (AP) - A juror in the Roger Clemens perjury trial said Wednesday that he and his fellow jurors didn't find the key prosecution witness in the case credible.
The witness, Clemens' longtime strength coach Brian McNamee, testified that he injected the star baseball pitcher with steroids and human growth hormone. But McNamee's physical evidence was kept in a beer can and his story changed over time. Clemens was acquitted last week of charges that he lied to Congress in 2008 when he denied using steroids or HGH.
"Brian McNamee was not a strong enough witness to render a verdict of guilty against Roger Clemens," juror Bradford Weaver told The Associated Press. He said that McNamee wasn't credible for the jury because of a lack of "truthfulness."
"The witnesses for the prosecution were, uh, how does one put it, kind of wanting, if you will. ... It was quite lacking. If that's what they were going to go with, then they should probably not have pursued the case in the first place if that's all they had, you know."
The U.S. Attorney's office for the District of Columbia, which prosecuted the case, declined to comment Wednesday.
Another juror, Joyce Robinson-Paul, told the AP the case came down to "who was the liar? Was it Clemens or was it McNamee? We decided that it was McNamee."
She said jurors concluded there were too many inconsistencies and too many different stories from McNamee. And she said they didn't believe that the physical evidence - medical waste containing steroids and Clemens' DNA - was reliable.
"Seven years of garbage?" said Robinson-Paul, a retiree. "That had to be tested against the test of time in a beer can. Plus, it was devious on his part."
Weaver said the testimony of Clemens' longtime friend and teammate, fellow pitcher Andy Pettitte, "was quite important to all of us, because he recanted." Pettitte testified that Clemens acknowledged in a conversation using HGH - only to say under cross-examination it was fair to say there was a "50/50" chance he misunderstood Clemens.
Weaver, 63, works as an administrative assistant at the Canadian Embassy, which coincidentally is next door to the federal courthouse where the Clemens trial was held. He said during jury selection in April that he was not a baseball fan, and that Clemens "seemed forthright" in his 2008 congressional appearance.
Jurors deliberated less than 10 hours, and Weaver said no one had to be persuaded to vote for acquittal. He said the jurors were unanimous from the beginning.
Weaver said he doesn't have a personal opinion about whether Clemens used performance-enhancing drugs. And he declined to comment when asked if he thought the case was a waste of money.
He also said that the two jurors who were dismissed for sleeping were very young.
"And given the nature of the case, and the intricacies that we had to deal with, I'm not surprised that they found it a bit boring," he said.
U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton on Wednesday released the names of the jurors in response to a Washington Post application for access to the names.
Besides Weaver and Robinson-Paul, all other jurors the AP was able to locate Wednesday either declined to comment or did not respond to messages.

Some security tokens designed to protect computer systems, like RSA's SecurID 800 system, are now just plain old tokens - for now. Team Prosecco, a group of cryptographers based at the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control, have figured out a way to extract the secret key from such tokens in just 13 minutes, effectively rendering them useless. The attack also works against older versions of the Estonian national ID card, allowing the team to forge a digital signature in around 48 hours.
The tokens are designed to provide more security than a fixed password alone can. They regularly generate a new six-digit number based on an initial starting number provided by RSA or another security firm, and users must input this number along with their password when logging in. Many tokens are stand-alone devices, but some like the SecurID 800 can be plugged into a computer via USB so that users don't have to enter the number themselves.
It is these USB tokens that have been cracked, using a technique called a "padding oracle attack", which essentially involves slightly modifying the encrypted text thousands of times. If the system views this extra padding as a valid encryption, the attacker can learn something about the original text until eventually they know the whole thing.
This kind of attack was first proposed in 1998 but until now was thought too slow to be practical, requiring 215,000 attempts to crack 1024-bit encryption. Now Team Prosecco have worked out a way to cut that number to just 9400, which takes about 13 minutes.
The researchers will present their attack at the CRYPTO 2012 conference in Santa Barbara, California, next month, but they have already informed the affected security token manufacturers, who are in the process of fixing the flaw. It is the latest in a series of troubles for RSA, which last year had to recall its tokens after hackers breached its internal network and stole secret information related to the system.

International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction publishes fundamental and applied research, critical reviews, policy papers and case studies addressing these issues at all geographical scales, and from a multidisciplinary perspective.
Dr. David Alexander of the Global Risk Forum GRF Davos, Editor-in-Chief of the journal said of the launch, "As the founding Editor?in?Chief, my vision for the journal is to create an international and interdisciplinary forum to foster communication and collaboration between researchers, policymakers and practitioners concerned with disaster research, mitigation and risk reduction."
International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction publishes research in the following scientific fields: earth sciences in its entirety; environmental sciences; engineering; urban studies; geography; and social sciences.
The first year of the journal's content will be freely available to view online until 31 August 2013 on ScienceDirect; first papers accepted for publication in the journal are now available online.

Lonesome George, the last surviving giant tortoise of Pinta Island in the Galapagos Islands, has died. Scientists say he was more than 100 years old.
Staff at the Galapagos National Park in Ecuador say George, the only remaining member of his subspecies, was found dead by his long-term keeper.
The park said it was "unhappily surprised" to discover his charge "stretched out in the direction of his watering hole with no signs of life," on Sunday.
A post-mortem examination will ascertain the cause of death; as old as he was by human standards, Lonesome George was not old for a giant tortoise.
The animals can live to around 200 years of age or even longer.
Lonesome George became a symbol of the Galapagos Islands and evolution in general after he was found on Pinta Island by Joseph Vagvolgyi in 1971.
George's plight as the only known member of his subspecies (hence his nickname) led to a series of ill-fated attempts to provide him with a mate.
But despite the efforts of conservationists - and two female tortoises from a close subspecies at the Charles Darwin Research Station - it wasn't to be.
George remained a solitary creature until his death yesterday.
His death marks the end of the purebred Pinta Island tortoise, but there is hope that they will survive in some form: at least one first-generation descendant of the subspecies has been found at the Wolf volcano on neighboring Isabela Island.
Genetic testing has been carried out to try to find further hybrids residing among the population there, according to reports.
The giant tortoises of the Galapagos played a key role in helping Charles Darwin formulate his theory of evolution after he visited the islands in the 1830s.
At the time, the super-sized reptiles were common, but the introduction of wild goats, which ate the vegetation that formed their diet, and the hunting habits of passing sailors left them on the brink of extinction.
