(AP) ? Greece's Parliament late on Tuesday approved new cuts in public sector pensions and government spending required to secure a second package of international rescue loans.

Lawmakers voted 202-80 in favor of cutbacks worth a total euro3.2 billion ($4.31 billion) and aimed at bringing the 2012 budget back in line with targets. Lawmakers from both parties in Prime Minister Lucas Papademos' coalition, the majority Socialists and the conservatives, backed the legislation.

Earlier, the debt-crippled country's Cabinet decided to apply recent labor reforms, including deep cuts to the minimum wage, retroactively to Feb. 14.

Greece is obliged to adopt a series of austerity measures and reforms before it can receive any funds from its new euro130 billion ($174 billion) package of rescue loans from other eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund.

The bailout, and accompanying bond swap deal with private creditors, are meant to save the country from a potentially catastrophic default in late March that could drag down other financially vulnerable countries and threaten the European Union's joint currency, the euro.

The rescue package is Greece's second in less than two years. The country has been surviving since May 2010 on funds from a first bailout from the eurozone and IMF, and has received euro73 billion ($98 billion) from the initially approved euro110 billion ($147 billion) package.

But more than two years of harsh austerity implemented to secure the rescue funds have taken a hefty toll on the recession-bound Greek economy, with businesses closing in the tens of thousands and unemployment at a record high 21 percent.

"It is dramatic to cut someone's pensions. ... But why do we have to take these measures? Because our budget is still running at a loss," Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said in Parliament. "We are still adding debt to our debt. And if we do not start to generate a primary surplus next year, that will be catastrophic."

The newly approved legislation imposes nearly euro400 million ($538 million) in cuts to already depleted pensions.

Health and education spending will be reduced by more than euro170 million ($229 million), subsidies to the state health care system will be cut by euro500 million ($673 million), and health care spending on medicine will fall by euro570 million ($767 million).

Furthermore, some euro400 million ($538 million) will be lopped off defense spending ? three quarters of which will come from purchases.

The law also revises the 2012 budget, changing the government deficit target to 6.7 percent of gross domestic product from an initial forecast of 5.4 percent.

Measures approved by Papademos' Cabinet earlier Tuesday include a 22 percent cut in the minimum salary, currently at euro751 ($1,010) per month, for private sector workers, and a 32 percent cut for workers under the age of 25, where the rate of unemployment is nearly 50 percent.

Limits also are being imposed on collective wage agreements and the process of labor arbitration, with some measures to remain in effect until overall unemployment falls below 10 percent.

Lawmakers are to vote again on Wednesday on another bill implementing cuts that have previously been announced.

The new wave of austerity measures have sparked widespread anger among a public that has seen its income and living standards drop with no clear end to the crisis in sight.

On Tuesday, about 100 uniformed police, coast guard and fire service unionists protested pay cuts outside Parliament, with a small group burning a wartime military German flag used in the Nazi era in 1935-1945. While Germany is a major contributor to both Greek bailouts, Berlin's insistence on an austerity-based cure for the country's financial woes has angered many Greeks.

Papademos, a technocrat heading Greece's temporary coalition government, is to head to Brussels for a meeting Wednesday with European Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso.

Greece's European partners have been pressing the country to implement the measures it has already passed, after repeated delays and missed targets over the last two years eroded trust in the ability of Greece's politicians to stick to their pledges.

European Parliament President Martin Schulz was in Athens on Tuesday for a series of meetings, and he gave a speech in Parliament stressing that "Greece must remain in the euro."

"We must do everything we can to prevent the collapse of the euro," he said, adding that more emphasis must be put on measures to promote growth rather than only on cutbacks.

"A policy based solely on austerity spells economic disaster," he told Greek deputies.

"Budgetary prudence is certainly essential (but) ... there is too much focus on financial penalties and austerity packages," Schulz said, adding that economic growth could be stifled in many European countries.

"How are countries whose economies are at a standstill, which are facing a recession, supposed to pay off their debts? Greece has already paid a high price. It cannot go on paying," he said.

On Monday, the Standard & Poor's ratings agency downgraded Greece's credit rating to "selective default" over a debt writedown deal with private creditors that is an integral part of the second bailout.

The downgrade had been widely expected, as ratings agencies had said the bond swap with private creditors, which seeks to cut euro107 billion ($144 billion) off Greece's debt, would constitute a selective default. Once the swap is carried out next month, the agencies are expected to upgrade Greece.

Late Tuesday, the International Swaps and Derivatives Association said it has accepted for consideration a question relating to a potential credit event with respect to Greece. An ISDA statement said a meeting will be held at 1100GMT on Thursday to determine whether a credit event has occurred.

The decision by the New York-based trade association, which represents hundreds of banks and other companies, will ultimately determine whether the bond swap will trigger payment of insurance taken by investors against a Greek default.

U.K. Corporate Arts Spending Hits 7-Year Low - Philanthropy Today ...

Financial support for cultural groups by British businesses dropped 7 percent, to $212.5-million, last year, the lowest figure since 2004, the BBC reports.

Overall donations for the arts, including gifts from individuals, foundations, and trusts, rose a little more than 4 percent to just under $1.1-billion in the 2010-11 fiscal year, according to culture philanthropy group Arts and Business.

The British government launched a major push last year to boost business philanthropy and support for the arts, terming 2011 the ?year of corporate giving.? Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt termed the overall increase in giving to the arts a success, telling a BBC radio program, ?I think it would have fallen a lot further if we hadn?t put in the effort that we have.?

Museums and heritage attractions took in more money in 2010-11, while visual-arts, theater, and community arts groups saw donations decline.

Samsung Optical Smart Hub SE-208BW review

As a species, we're distrustful of versatility. When Justin Timberlake is as successful in acting and business as he was as a singer, we cry foul. Therefore, it's only natural that Samsung's Optical Smart Hub should raise a hackle or two. It boasts of being a CD / DVD player for your mobile device, a wireless access point, a portable disc burner for your laptop and a backup server (with the help of a USB drive). Doing the work of four gadgets would certainly free up a lot of real estate on anyone's desk -- so is it worth $130 of your hard-earned? The answer's a little more nuanced than you might expect, so join us after the break to find out more.

Improving Your Life, One Home Improvement At A Time | Bill Keating ...

Home improvement projects could be rather tricky if you are not so handy or knowledgeable. Even though some undertakings could be handled without help, for far more significant fixes or enhancements, we advise utilizing, or at the very least consulting with a educated specialist. Difficulties with your home heating or air conditioner really should not be dealt with alone, because they are expensive and complicated pieces of equipment that will simply be broken. Should you be needing some repairs on your units, be sure to make contact with an HVAC contractor in Denver to have the work carried out properly.

A Home Improvement Guide To Finer Living

Your home can affect how you feel inside. If you are like most people, your time is split mainly between your home and your job. When you work from home, the comfort and functionality of your home has even more of an effect on how you live. Make your home a sanctuary, and you?ll be ready to take on the world. Here are some great ideas for making any home into a place you can truly love.

Focus on making your home as comfortable and relaxing as possible. Obtaining total perfection in your everyday life would become quite boring rather quickly. However, if there is an item of your home that causes irritation or discomfort, it will continue to be a mental thorn until you deal with it. It is important that you have high comfort, even in your computer chair. Getting a new mattress for your bed will also make a big difference in your comfort level and life.

Make your home bigger. Sometimes spaces become so outgrown that simply rearranging or reorganizing will not create the necessary improvements to environment. You should think about making an addition to your home. Minimal additions of space can make a huge difference in the look and feel of the rooms in your home.

Try to add more entertainment features to your home. Though pools or spas will dramatically increase a home?s value, workout rooms, thought less substantial, are still valued by potential buyers. Another great thing about adding recreation items is that they will enhance your home?s value.

The quality and placement of lighting can improve the overall feel of a room. Be sure to light up every nook and cranny. Experiment with different types of lamps and bulb wattage to create the desired ambiance for your home. You can do this on your own, or you can hire a professional.

Landscape your yard. Your neighbors will have fair justification to envy your beautiful and lush lawn throughout the year. Everyone loves the smell of green things and it improves everyone?s mood. Scatter some plants around the place to improve the quality of the oxygen, and breathe deeply.

Change your home?s exterior. This improvement may come from new paint or a new roof with coordinating colors. New windows can also create a fresh look. Whenever you make it home from a hard day, you will pull up to a nice place you love to call your home.

If you are happy with your house, you will want to stay there. When you make an investment in your home you will be happier as you make your home more valuable.

DIY'er makes his own conductive ink, teaches you how to do the same

There are DIY projects that you should do at your own risk, and then there are DIY projects that you should do at your own risk. This conductive ink concocted by Jordan Bunker falls into the latter category, but it should be relatively straightforward for those who know what they're doing (or those with proper supervision), and it results in a product that's markedly cheaper than existing off-the-shelf alternatives (Jordan spent around $150 for a decent-sized batch). That can then be used for any number of electronics projects, of which you'll have to discern your own degree of danger. Jordan's promising a video soon, but you can find the complete instructions for making your own at the source link below in the meantime.

High-Altitude Surveillance Drones: Coming to a Sky Near You

Last week President Obama signed a sweeping aviation bill that, among other things, will open the skies to ?unmanned aircraft systems,? more commonly known as drones. Much of the discussion regarding the coming era of domestic drones has been focused on the many important questions regarding their use at low altitudes. To what extent will it be legal, for example, for drones to hover 300 feet above residential neighborhoods snapping pictures into backyards and windows? What level of human-in-the-loop control is needed to ensure safety in a crowded airspace? And how can we stop terrorists from piloting drones at treetop level towards a target?

But there is another portion of the airspace?the stratosphere?that while mostly empty today, will in the coming years will become increasingly populated by gossamer-like, solar-powered drones turning silent, lazy circles in the sky. These drones will stay aloft for years at a time, running on energy collected during the day using solar panels mounted on paper-thin wings. As their slowly turning propellers push them along at bicycle speeds, arrays of high-resolution cameras on their undersides will record the daily comings and goings of the population of entire cities.

The stratosphere lies roughly between 40,000 and 150,000 feet in altitude. Commercial airliners often ply its lower reaches, but above about 55,000 feet the traffic is limited to a few military reconnaissance planes, unmanned weather and scientific balloons, and at rare intervals, a rocket arcing upward on its way to orbit. The stratosphere is mostly empty, cold, and quiet, closer to the blackness of outer space than to the din of human commerce.

Like so much in aviation, that is about to change. The technology to turn the stratosphere into the domain of the drones is already well under development. The Zephyr, a high-altitude, solar-powered drone designed by British company QinetiQ and weighing under 120 pounds despite having a 74-foot wingspan, stayed aloft for two continuous weeks in a summer 2010 test in Arizona. In September 2010, Boeing announced that it had been awarded a contract by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to develop the Solar Eagle, a craft that will eventually be able to fly above 60,000 feet for five continuous years. And many of the information technologies needed perform detailed surveillance from these platforms are already found in common consumer electronics devices.

Of course, permanent eyes in the sky aren?t new. Satellites, after all, have been a constant presence for decades, and the best military reconnaissance satellites can likely deliver stunningly precise pictures of a target of interest. However, spy satellites can?t linger over a single point on the ground. By contrast, stratospheric drones will operate at altitudes that are simultaneously high enough to enable coverage of an entire city and low enough to easily collect and convey detailed images of everything in view.

What, exactly, will these drones be able to see? A lot, as it turns out. They will record the route and speed of every vehicle on the streets. They will observe the movements of individual pedestrians. At night, they will capture the precise moments when the lights in living rooms and bedrooms are turned on and off. The data they acquire, which can be correlated with information from mobile devices and smart meters, will become an important component of the growing digital record of nearly everything we do.

And what of the legal framework for the privacy of the information collected using high-altitude drones? In 1986, the Supreme Court ruled that the police use of a private plane to view otherwise hidden marijuana plants growing in a California back yard did not constitute a violation of the Fourth Amendment because the observations were made from ?public navigable airspace.? This precedent suggests that the owners of drones operated in public airspace may initially enjoy broad latitude to use them for surveillance.

Ryan Calo of the Stanford Center for Internet & Society projects that drones will lead to a tightening of privacy protections precisely because they can expose so much formerly private information. For low-altitude operation, this tightening may well occur. It is hard to imagine, for example, that paparazzi and stalkers will enjoy legal protection for the long-term operation of small, camera-equipped helicopter drones above private residences.

But high-altitude drone surveillance that indiscriminately captures the detailed life of an entire city is unlikely to be viewed by the courts as a violation of the Fourth Amendment. Privacy rights, both in the formal legal sense and in terms of the accompanying societal expectations and tolerances, are often tied to the extent of individual targeting involved. For example, most of us do not object to the presence of video surveillance cameras in transit systems, office buildings, and retail stores. We recognize the necessity of this surveillance, and, importantly, we know that the video recording is not preferentially directed towards specific people. In practice, privacy is both an absolute and a relative concept, and we tend to be more accepting of privacy reductions that apply equally to everyone.

Today, no government body is actively and publicly promoting a plan to establish a permanent high-altitude surveillance drone presence above American cities. But because it will soon be inexpensive and easy to do so, and because the information gathered will be considered useful and valuable, it will inevitably happen?not this year, and likely not next year, but almost certainly by the end of the decade.

Should I go Vegetarian? | Garden of Life - Empowering ...

Go for it! There are better sources of protein than greek yogurt, which often has gelatin in it (animal product). If you have money and time, vegan isn?t hard! Some meat alternatives are expensive but if you shop around and find stuff you like you will be able to compare prices and find fascinating tasty stuff that is sometimes just hidden in the grocery pile and doesn?t cost a total lot. :) Cooking your own stuff is fun anyway?. Make sure you have your family?s support with helping you cook and stuff. At first my parents thought it was a burden for me to be veg but now being later they are used to it and since we cook vegan stuff together I bet they eat like 50% less meat than before. :)

If you?re doing it for animals, then veganism won?t be hard and if you really care you shouldn?t have cravings for meat or whatever thing? I just recently stopped eating cheese and I thought I would still want it all the time but now whenever I see it, it disgusts me. xD
Anyhow, whatever you do is your choice and if you don?t give up dairy you can get protein from that and you can also eat lots of beans/nuts and total grains. Excellent luck. Maybe I will post my recipe for 15 minute vegan chocolate cupcakes on here later if I have time. :D

edit~~
yes, you also have to worry about other nutrients like iron and stuff. Mineral deposits are pretty simple to get from veggies/tofu/etc and even though a lot of B vitamins are mostly from animals you can find them supplemented in some common products like muesli or you may possibly just take a supplement. Question your doctor or a dietician if you?re concerned about whatever thing?

Here?s my recipe, which is an experimental thing and made for people to modify how they want?. xP not really sure of nutritional facts but it?s got to be in excellent health than other cupcakes! ^^

Quick&Cheap vegan chocolate cupcakes:

2 cups Baker?s Corner brand ?Baking Mix? or similar product
2/3 cup soymilk
2 tbs vegetable oil
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup chocolate syrup

you can add more of whatever thing to get desired consistency or taste or add dark chocolate chips?.

-Mix everything together in the order it?s listed (while preheating oven to 425)
-Place in baking cups (makes around a dozen depending on how huge you fill them) in baking pan
-Bake @ 425 degrees for around 10-15 mins or until you can insert toothpick and pull it out clean
-Eat batter remnants while baking :D
-When done cooking take out from oven and place cupcakes on a separate cooling surface
-After cooling a few minutes, eat; or for a better flavor, top with more chocolate syrup! :D

Is DJing a performing art? ?If it were considered a performing art by our clients ? that is, if DJs were considered artists ? our profession could be elevated to a point where we could overcome stigmas of DJs being no more than glorified serving staff or musical bartenders (no disrespect to serving staff or, particularly, bartenders, without whom I?m sure I could not live). Then could corresponding prices be far behind?

When I think of ?entertainment?, I think of performances in disciplines that would most likely be considered performing arts. Things like theatre, dance or music performance. I?m a singer in a band?as well as a DJ. I consider a band performance a performing art. A band is actually ?performing? music live with skills we have worked a lifetime to develop ? our ?art?. Artists who have practiced for hours each day and spent years perfecting musical talent and skill generally don?t think twice about what to charge a client for their time and talent. But DJs do.

At Jerry Bruno Productions, I work full time booking all of the bands and DJs we represent. This gives me a unique perspective from both the artist viewpoint and the agent?s. There seems to be an almost universal expectation among clients booking live bands to pay premium rates. This expectation goes beyond the simple math of ?more musicians equals more money?. There seems to be an inherent respect for a musician?s skill that manifests itself in an expectation to pay more. That?s not to say that everyone who wants to book a band has a bottomless wallet. They don?t and band clients present many of the same budget-related challenges that we deal with with clients looking for DJs. But what?s not the same is the almost automatic price objection from DJ clients. I tend to spend a lot more time defending, explaining and justifying DJ prices than band prices. Clients consider musicians artists.

Price haggling is rare if it exists at all among patrons of the arts. Concert tickets are what they are. Theatre fans will pay $100 a ticket or more to see a Broadway show. What about DJs? Wouldn?t it be nice to demand the same respect ? and proportional price. As a DJ, do you consider yourself an artist? If so, (and I believe you should), how can you translate that to your clients?

A brief Google search for the definition of ?Performing Arts? yielded this definition:

?Forms of creative activity that are performed in front of an audience, such as drama, music, and dance.?

OK. ?Creative activity?. Preparing, programming and presenting music is certainly creative activity. Add to that other creative DJ skills of acting, dancing, narrating and writing just to name a few and DJing fits that criteria. And all of those skills should definitely be rehearsed (if you have any level of professionalism) and are certainly ?performed in front of an audience?. Many DJs have spent a lifetime immersed in popular music. Through study and practice, they have exceptional knowledge and skill that should be respected (and paid for) every bit as much as that of a ballerina or an orchestra conductor.

Skeptics might point out that a DJ is not actually creating something original. I would argue that neither is a revival of a stage musical created long ago by writers that often have nothing to do with the current production. The sculptor who creates a ?work of art? out of mechanical parts or even garbage is using material she didn?t create. But she is interpreting that material in her own way to make something new. DJs can do the same thing.

There are even some DJs who seem to be held in higher regard as actual performers. High profile turntablists or controllerists, whose gear seems to be considered musical instruments are viewed as artists on a much different level than professional mobile DJs. If the glass is half full, these high profile, DJs/Producers will raise awareness of the profession in general as a true art.

All of us DJs know our profession has a sort of an identity crisis. Just spend a few minutes in any DJ forum and try to navigate through the sea of insecurity disguised as ?my speakers are bigger than yours? or threads regarding bottom feeders. One cure for this crisis is to realize that we are artists. We have developed and honed skills that can enlighten, challenge and, of course, entertain an audience. DJs can elevate an audience experience to a level that can create memories for a lifetime.

What could be more artistic than that?

iPhone 'antennagate' settlement: free bumper or $15

Paul Sakuma/AP

Apple CEO Steve Jobs talks about the Apple iPhone 4 at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., Friday, July 16, 2010.

By Athima Chansanchai

If you were one of about 21 million people who bought an iPhone 4 in the first half of 2010, you may now claim one of two choices in a recent settlement of a class action lawsuit against Apple for its flawed smartphone antenna:?a free bumper case (which was offered in 2010 when "Antennagate" raged throughout the land) or $15.

We know, it seems like a pittance for all the angst over the controversy, which turned already rabid Apple fanboys and girls into "Quarantine"-level homicidal maniacs in defense of their precious iPhone 4, even as researchers proved there was something to how user grips contributed to dropped calls. "Antennagate" also stirred more animosity as?Consumer Reports' refused to recommend the iPhone 4, despite it earning its highest score in the smartphone category.

As the Rothken law firm pointed out:

The alleged design defects include the antenna embedded in the case, when used and handled?in the normal and ordinary course, caused a degraded signal and dropped calls. In addition, software that?was meant to provide the display of the strength of the mobile signal via "bars" was programmed in a defective manner.?

Ira Rothken tweeted the update Friday: "We got preliminary approval of class action settlement in the iphone 4 antenna case today over 21 million class members 15 dollars or bumper."

CNET has the details on the settlement, which came from:

18 separate lawsuits that were consolidated into one. All share the claim that Apple was "misrepresenting and concealing material information in the marketing, advertising, sale, and servicing of its iPhone 4 ??particularly as it relates to the quality of the mobile phone antenna and reception and related software."

Emails will go out to purchasers before April 30, with the claims period open for 120 days.Apple is again giving free bumper cases to those who didn't take advantage of the offer in July 2010, with bumper cases then priced at $29 (with full refunds available to those who had already bought the case). A quick scan at Amazon shows they're now priced under $2 (including shipping).

?

The Rothken firm is no stranger to tech-based class action lawsuits, as it has also in recent years filed class action lawsuits against T-Mobile, Microsoft, Sony and Carrier IQ, mostly as it pertains to privacy and sensitive data.?

Commercial Real Estate Crash Coming | home business blog

COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE CRASH?

There is much mystery in the topic of the credit crisis, but not as much mystery as the ?huge crash in commercial real estate? which we see on the horizon. It is looming but no one is warning us! It?s a very strange situation. It might have hit private sectors but Main stream news is hardly covering the topic. There could be reason for this, especially as it could be a catalyst for the market, which at new highs and weak is just looking for the perfect excuse to start heading south.

All of the components of real estate value are going in the wrong direction simultaneously, Occupancy rates are going down. Rent rates are going down and the capitalization rate ? the return that investors are demanding to buy a property ? are going up. This is a slap in the face. And is imploding more and more each day. Commercial real estate has over the last several months taken a tremendous setback both in rents and in cap rates, depending on the type of product, the value of real estate is down anywhere from 25 to 75 percent.

Many of the big wigs on wall st are now very hesitant and are using ?extreme caution? before putting money into commercial real estate, especially office space, because properties are losing tenants at a dramatic rate.

U.S. commercial property sales are forecast to fall to the lowest in almost two decades as the industry endures its worst slump since the savings and loan crisis of the early 1990s, according to property research firm Real Capital Analytics Inc. The Moody?s/REAL Commercial Property Price Indicies already have fallen almost 41 percent since October 2007. A move that has not been seen for many years. It is solid evidence that this is a very big problem that won?t go away quickly.

In order for the commercial real estate market to start its healing process, trust in people and banks must be restored and we cant see this in the short term.

The four keys to restoring this confidence, at the moment are by

1) Making sure consumers have jobs,
2) Having them see their home prices go up instead of down,
3) Giving them access to credit
4) Letting them see an increase in their 401k.

We see this problem continue to worsen down the track, and if it hits mainstream news it will spook investors, and those invested in the global markets. We have to monitor this situation and investigate things further as time progresses, but this needs to be mentioned and is a big deal. We feel that it is not being put out in the open for a reason, and as we move into 2010 there might be more evidence of why this has occurred.

(AP) ? After all the testimonials from relatives and friends, the songs from legends and pop stars, the preaching and even laughter, the raw emotion of Whitney Houston's funeral came down to just one moment: The sound of her own voice.

As the strains of her biggest record, "I Will Always Love You," filled the New Hope Baptist Church at the end of the nearly four-hour service Saturday and her silver-and-gold casket was lifted in the air, the weight of the moment was too much for her mother to bear.

Gospel singer Cissy Houston wailed, "My baby! My baby!" as she was held up by two women and led out of the church behind her daughter's body.

A few steps behind her was the pop icon's daughter, Bobbi Kristina, also crying uncontrollably as she was comforted by Houston's close friend, singer Ray J.

It was the most searing scene on a day with mixed moods as family, friends and a list of celebrities ? sometimes one and the same ? came to the humble New Hope Baptist Church, where Whitney Houston first wowed a congregation, to remember one of music's legends, but also a New Jersey hometown girl.

Houston died the previous Saturday in Beverly Hills, Calif., on the eve of the Grammys at the age of 48.

She is to be buried Sunday next to her father, John Houston, in nearby Westfield, N.J.

Her death marked the end of a life of stunning achievement. Blessed with a voice of great power and beauty, Houston became one of pop music's most successful artists over a career that spanned nearly three decades and segued into film with hits like "The Bodyguard."

But her life was not without struggles. An addiction to drugs and a tumultuous union with ex-husband Bobby Brown saw her tumbling from grace.

Both sides of Houston were recalled at the service at New Hope, which was filled with about 300 mourners, including Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Forest Whitaker, Jennifer Hudson, Diane Sawyer and Houston's cousin, Dionne Warwick.

"She was someone with a charmed and a beautiful life, sometimes misunderstood, even by herself," said her sister-in-law and manager, Patricia Houston. "But a life nevertheless that gave joy, happiness, enthusiasm, peace and beautiful music to millions of people around the world."

Kevin Costner, her co-star in "The Bodyguard," said that for all of Houston's beauty and success, she was still yearning for approval from the public and somewhat insecure, a superstar who "still wondered, 'Am I good enough? Am I pretty enough? Will they like me?'"

"It's a tree we could all hang from ? the unexplainable burden that comes with fame," he said. "Call it doubt. Call it fear. I've had mine. And I know the famous in the room have had theirs."

Many who spoke talked about Houston's unshakable faith in Jesus Christ. They said it got her through some of her most difficult times. Perry recalled a conversation where Houston would look sad when reflecting on her troubles, but then would hasten to add that God was taking care of her.

"The other thing I know for sure ? and this is more important than anything that she's done in her life ? Whitney Houston loved the Lord," he said.

Fittingly, music played a major role in the send-off to one of music's greatest voices.

Stevie Wonder rewrote lyrics to "Ribbon in the Sky" for Houston ? "you will always be a ribbon in the sky," he sang.

So did gospel's the Rev. Kim Burrell for "A Change is Gonna Come," which Warwick said was Houston's favorite song of all time. R. Kelly brought the New Hope Baptist Church to its feet with a stirring version of "I Look to You," the title of Houston's final studio album.

And Keys, her voice breaking at times, dedicated her song "Send Me An Angel" to Houston

Brown briefly appeared at the funeral, walking to the casket, touching it and walking out. He later said in a statement that he and his children were asked repeatedly to move and he left rather than risk creating a scene.

Close family friend Aretha Franklin, whom Houston lovingly called "Aunt Ree," had been expected to sing at the service, but said early Saturday she was too ill to attend. Franklin said in an email to The Associated Press that she had been up most of the night with leg spasms and sent best wishes to the family.

Saturday night, Franklin performed at Radio City Music Hall and remembered Houston with a light gospel rendition of "I Will Always Love You."

Warwick presided over the funeral, introducing speakers and singers and offering short insights about her cousin; she joked that Houston's Super Bowl performance of "The Star Spangled Banner" became almost as big as the telephone book.

Hudson, who sang "I Will Always Love You" in a Grammy tribute the night after Houston's death, mourned Houston along with Monica, Brandy, and Jordin Sparks ? representing a generation of big-voiced young singers who grew up emulating the star of the '80s and '90s. Sparks stars with Houston in the remake of the 1970s film "Sparkle," due out in August.

As the funeral began, mourners fell quiet as three police officers escorted Houston's casket, draped with white roses and purple lilies. White-robed choir members began to fill the pews on the podium. As the band played softly, the choir sang in a hushed voice, "Whitney, Whitney, Whitney."

A program featuring a picture of Houston looking skyward read "Celebrating the life of Whitney Elizabeth Houston, a child of God." Pictures of Houston as a baby, with her mother and daughter filled the program.

"I never told you that when you were born, the Holy Spirit told me that you would not be with me long," Cissy Houston wrote her daughter in a letter published in the program. "And I thank God for the beautiful flower he allowed me to raise and cherish for 48 years."

"Rest, my baby girl in peace," the letter ends. It is signed "Mommie."

Over her career, Houston sold more than 50 million records in the United States alone. Her voice, an ideal blend of power, grace and beauty, made classics out of songs like "Saving All My Love For You," ''I Will Always Love You," ''The Greatest Love of All" and "I'm Every Woman." Her six Grammys were only a fraction of her many awards.

Houston had her first No. 1 hit by the time she was 22, followed by a flurry of No. 1 songs and multi-platinum records. Her last album, "I Look To You," debuted on the top of the charts when it was released in 2009 with strong sales, but didn't have the staying power of her previous records. A tour the next year was doomed by cancellations because of illness and sub-par performances.

On Saturday, fans were kept blocks from the church and the invitation-only funeral, but their presence was felt. A huge shrine of heart-shaped balloons and personal messages covered the street corner around the church entrance.

A few fans gathered hours before the service as close as they could get to the church, some from as far away as Washington, D.C., and Miami. Bobby Brooks said he came from Washington "just to be among the rest of the fans."

"Just to celebrate her life, not just her death," he said. "Just to sing and dance with the people that love her."
