The American Society of Magazine Editors recently announced the 2013 National Magazine Awards. Zinio scoped out the finalists and hand-picked potential future winners.

The Injustice: Gods Among Us iOS game brings your comic book fantasies to life, at least assuming those fantasies involve having 3 on 3 battles between DC Comics superheroes and villains. Players collect cards based on characters like Batman, Flash, Cyborg, Green Lantern, Harley Quinn, Superman and more. Once the cards have been collected, players level up their characters and increase their powers to get ready for a touch-based 3 on 3 battle. Injustice: Gods Among Us also features cross-platform functionality, as players can unlock items in the console version of the game and use them in the mobile version (and vice versa).

If The Other Brothers, developed by 3D Attack Interactive, feels slightly familiar, you can just think a little harder about the name, which is a callout to the Mario Bros. series of games. But The Other Brothers is sort of Mario escalated. The game is pixel-animated, but everything looks more realistic than in a Mario game especially the enraged mobsters and cityscape backdrops. Each level has a familiar 3-star rating system, but The Other Brothers also features classic boss battles to challenge even the hardiest of gamers. This is a classic platformer that is bringing some new ideas to the table.

Do you like those endless runner games but think they need a little more strategy and planning? How about an endless RPG? Enter Slayin from FDG Entertainment. In this unique app, players choose from one of three heroes (a knight, wizard, or knave) and go on an adventure slaying as many monsters as possible. Players will level up as they play, but once they die, that?s the end of the game. Slayin? features retro graphics more than a hundred challenging quests to master over its three game modes.

Run Sheldon! by Bee Square is a more standard endless runner than Slayin?, but it also features a bit more of an action element, as Sheldon can pick up power-ups and other items along his way to aid him as he attempts to evade the angry Hare Gang trying to catch him. Run Sheldon! features one button controls and there are over ten types of enemies in the game to give players a real challenge.

'Strikingly similar' brains of human and fly may aid mental health research

Apr. 11, 2013 ? A new study by scientists at King's College London and the University of Arizona (UA) published in Science reveals the deep similarities in how the brain regulates behaviour in arthropods (such as flies and crabs) and vertebrates (such as fish, mice and humans). The findings shed new light on the evolution of the brain and behaviour and may aid understanding of disease mechanisms underlying mental health problems.

Based on their own findings and available literature, Dr Frank Hirth (King's) and Dr Nicholas Strausfeld (UA) compared the development and function of the central brain regions in arthropods (the 'central complex') and vertebrates (the 'basal ganglia').

Research suggests that both brain structures derive from embryonic stem cells at the base of the developing forebrain and that, despite the major differences between species, their respective constitutions and specifications derive from similar genetic programmes.

The authors describe that nerve cells in the central complex and the basal ganglia become inter-connected and communicate with each other in similar ways, facilitating the regulation of adaptive behaviours. In other words, the response of a fly or a mouse to internal stimuli such as hunger or sleep, and external stimuli such as light/dark or temperature, are regulated by similar neural mechanisms.

Dr Hirth from King's College London Institute of Psychiatry says: "Flies, crabs, mice, humans: all experience hunger, need sleep and have a preference for a comfortable temperature so we speculated there must be a similar mechanism regulating these behaviours. We were amazed to find just how deep the similarities go, despite the differences in size and appearance of these species and their brains."

Dr Strausfeld, a Regents Professor in the UA's Department of Neuroscience and the Director of the UA's Center for Insect Science, says: "When you compare the two structures, you find that they are very similar in terms of how they're organized. Their development is orchestrated by a whole suite of genes that are homologous between flies and mice, and the behavioral deficits resulting from disturbances in the two systems are remarkably similar as well."

In humans, dysfunction of the basal ganglia can cause severe mental health problems ranging from autism, schizophrenia and psychosis, to neurodegeneration -- as seen in Parkinson's disease, motor neuron disease and dementia -- as well as sleep disturbances, attention deficits and memory impairment. Similarly, when parts of the central complex are affected in fruit flies, they display similar impairments.

Dr Hirth (King's) adds: "The deep similarities we see between how our brains and those of insects regulate behaviour suggest a common evolutionary origin. It means that prototype brain circuits, essential for behavioural choice, originated very early and have been maintained across animal species throughout evolutionary time. As surprising as it may seem, from insects' dysfunctional brains, we can learn a great deal about how human brain disorders come about."

The findings suggest that arthropod and vertebrate brain circuitries derive from a common ancestor already possessing a complex neural structure mediating the selection and maintenance of behavioural actions.

Although no fossil remains of the common ancestor exist, trace fossils, in the form of tracks criss-crossing the seafloor hundreds of millions of years ago, reveal purposeful changes in direction.

Dr Strausfeld (UA) says: "If you compare these tracks to the tracks left behind by a foraging fly larva on an agar plate or the tunnels made by a leaf-mining insect, they're very similar. They all suggest that the animal chose to perform various different actions, and action selection is precisely what the central complex and the basal ganglia do."

The trace fossils may thus support the early existence of brains complex enough to allow for action selection and a shared ancestry of neural structures between invertebrates and vertebrates.

Relationships: Team women versus distant men

Apr. 10, 2013 ? Women immerse themselves in their romantic relationships, while men place their best friendships and romantic partners on an equal but distant footing.

These are the findings by Dr Anna Machin and Professor Robin Dunbar from the University of Oxford presented today, Thursday 11 April 2013, at the British Psychological Society Annual Conference in Harrogate.

A total of 341 people took part in online psychological research forum where they answered questions regarding the maintenance, role and value of their best friend and romantic partnerships.

Women saw the maintenance of their romantic partnerships as a team sport, involving equal input from both partners with shared goals and beliefs being the key to success. Further, their happiness and contentment were intimately bound up in both their best friendships and romantic partnerships.

In contrast, men were found to exist at a greater distance from both of their closest relationships. When asked to score themselves against their best friends and romantic partners on a range of attributes their responses indicated that, consciously or not, they continued to act as though they were members of the dating market despite being in committed relationships.

Women preferred cooperation not competition with their best friends. They also scored their partner consistently higher than themselves, seemingly placing their partner on a pedestal.

However, both sexes reported emotional extremes within their romantic partnerships, the effects of which appear to be buffered by their relationship with their best friend. For both sexes this relationship is a vital source of comfort, stability and understanding, a refuge from the sometimes choppy waters of the romantic relationship.

Dr Machin concluded that: "Our research shows that successful relationships are much more essential to women's well-being than men's. Men seem to keep their relationships at arm's length with one eye on the dating market. It seems that regardless of our culture of monogamy and commitment the biological imperative still operates, to a greater or lesser degree, for men. The war of the sexes is still alive and kicking within our relationships."

When Public Scrutiny Requires Crisis Communications | TheGutes

It?s a type of public relations that any public relations professional can come across. Some firms focus specifically on this tough topic. Other firms have specialists. Some hate it and others love the challenge. Regularly referred to as Crisis Communications, enterprises, small businesses, celebrities and consumer brands can all be affected by a crisis and are smart to prepare a plan in case of an emergency.

Crisis communications is defined as a sub-specialty of public relations.? It is designed to protect and defend an individual, company, or organization that?s facing public challenge to its reputation. Some recognizable crisis communications at its finest include: Richard Branson?s Virgin, Chick-fil-A, Bill Clinton, Chris Brown after his altercation with Rihanna, and even motorcycle guru Jesse James after his affair while married to Sandra Bullock.

After the online release of a couple offensive ads for the Ford Figo hatchback, Ford Motors has become the latest victim of scrutiny, media backlash, and in immediate need for crisis communications. The advertisements showed former Italian Prime Minister flashing a peace sign in the front of the vehicle with three women bound and gagged in the rear. Another ad portrayed characters of the Kardashian sisters bound and tied up in the back of the car, while a Paris Hilton look-a-like drove the car with the tagline: ?Leave your worries behind with Figo?s extra-large boot.?

Ford FigoAlthough, the advertisers who created these ads have been relieved of their jobs, the damage has been done. The public has voiced its opinion and Ford is hearing comments such as: ?I will never buy a Ford? and ?I will try to never sit in a Ford again.? After all the hard work the automotive industry in the United States has done to keep strong during the recession, from a PR perspective the goal would be to quickly repair Ford?s image and prevent this from setting the company back. Immediately, a carefully drafted public apology on the matter was released by Ford on Monday ? the first step of a crisis communication plan. The advertising agency responsible for the ads released an explanation, saying the ?distasteful? posters were never intended for paid publication and were not requested by Ford. Regardless if they were requested or not, it did force Ford to speak up and ensure they are taking this seriously and will make sure nothing like this ever happens again.

Issues with public images can occur anytime, whether a crisis is predicted and prepared for, or comes out of the blue ? such as with Ford Motors. In either case, an effective crisis communications plan is critical for your public relations team to prepare. You never know when it might need to be applied.

During challenging times, you need a communications team that thinks on its feet and offers viable solutions. The key is to move quickly and get underneath the issues, develop scenarios and contingency plans, and undertake actions to mitigate the fallout from crises.? Do you have a plan in place?
