Yahoo names PayPal exec as its CEO (AP)

NEW YORK ? Yahoo Inc. has named Scott Thompson, president of eBay Inc.'s PayPal division, as its new CEO, the fourth one in less than five years for the struggling Internet company.

Yahoo, which announced its choice Wednesday, has been without a permanent CEO since early September. It fired Carol Bartz after losing patience with her attempts to turn around the company during her 2 1/2 years on the job. Tim Morse, Yahoo's chief financial officer, has been interim CEO since Bartz's ouster.

Thompson has served as president of PayPal, eBay's online payment service, since January 2008. He previously served as PayPal's senior vice president and chief technology officer.

Yahoo said Thompson's new job starts on Jan. 9. Morse will return to his CFO post.

Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock said Thompson's track record of building on existing resources "to reignite innovation and drive growth" is "precisely the formula we need at Yahoo."

It will be a big task. Yahoo, which is based in Sunnyvale, Calif., has been losing ground in the fast-growing Internet advertising market to Google Inc. and Facebook Inc. for years. Mainly for this reason, its stock price has not topped $20 for the past three years.

Yahoo's board has been reviewing a possible sale of all or part of the company since Bartz's ouster last fall. There are several potential suitors, including China's Alibaba Group, which may partner with private equity firms in a joint bid. Wednesday's announcement signals that Yahoo is not looking to sell the entire company.

Bartz, too, was hired to help turn Yahoo around but she had no experience in Internet advertising ? Yahoo's main revenue source. This immediately raised doubts about her qualifications.

Thompson, who was PayPal's chief technology officer before becoming president, is a technologist, with no skills in restructuring or media, said BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis.

"Payments and ads are not the same thing," he said.

But the analyst added that Yahoo could have done worse, and Thompson has had "a good run" at PayPal.

"He's certainly going to have an opportunity to prove himself," he said, adding that it "remains to be seen how desirable this job was.

"Whoever steps in this role is not going to have an easy time," Gillis said.

Yahoo's stock fell 38 cents, or 2.3 percent, to $15.91 in morning trading following the announcement.

Shares of eBay, meanwhile, dropped $1.21, or 3.9 percent, to $30.13. Gillis, though, said Thompson's departure won't hurt eBay.

"PayPal is much bigger than any one individual," he said. "Some new blood may even help reinvigorate it."

Football banning orders could be extended to the Gaelic games and rugby

Football banning orders could be extended to the GAA and rugby if the sporting codes request it, the Justice Minister has said.

The new power to allow a court to ban individuals from matches came into force on January 1, but applies only to soccer.

But David Ford said it could be extended to Gaelic games and rugby if their governing bodies of the sports asked for it.

"Football banning orders provide the police and the courts with the power to stop someone whose actions have resulted in violence going to or from a match from attending another game in Northern Ireland for up to 10 years," said the Justice Minister.

"They should be seen as part of a package of measures we have put in place to make sporting events safer for spectators and more family-friendly.

"We have already commenced legislation preventing the possession of alcohol on special transport going to football grounds. This also applies to GAA and rugby as well.

"It sits alongside powers prohibiting supporters from pitch invasion, missile throwing and offensive chanting.

"If the sporting authorities from GAA or rugby request the extension of banning orders to their sport, this is something I will consider."

Saudi Arabia: OIC opposes military intervention in Syria

Saudi Arabia: OIC opposes military intervention in Syria

02-01-2012

JEDDAH, (Arab News): The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is firmly opposed to any international military intervention in Syria and has called for a negotiated settlement of the conflict through regional means, Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said on Sunday.

We have seen the disaster and turmoil brought by international military intervention in more than one place, be it Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia or any other place. So, we fully oppose the idea of any such intervention but are open to dialogue and regional endeavors to resolve the conflict and to stop the blood-shed in Syria, Ihsanoglu said.

The OIC chief called for the reforms promised by the Syrian leadership to be implemented in order to meet the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people, and for security and stability to return to the country.

He further said that the OIC was waiting for the report of the Arab League monitors already in unrest-hit Syria to take stock of the situation and that it will not send a fact-finding mission of its own to Damascus, because there is no need to duplicate a similar effort already under way.

We will wait for the Arab monitors' report and study it threadbare and then chalk out our future course of action, he said.

However, the OIC chief assured that the group had already conceived a contingency plan to put in action if the situation further deteriorated in Syria, but refused to divulge its details.

A team of Arab League monitors arrived in Syria on Monday night. The 60 Arab League monitors, who began work Tuesday, are the first Syria has allowed in during the nine-month anti-government uprising. They are supposed to ensure that President Bashar Assad's regime complies with terms of the Arab League plan to end crackdown on dissent. The UN says more than 5,000 people have died in the uprising since March.

When asked whether the OIC was keen to play any role in facilitating talks between all the stakeholders in Afghanistan, Ihsanoglu said, that Taleban's inclusion is the main factor for the success of any peace process in war-torn Afghanistan. The OIC is in touch with all the stakeholders in Afghanistan conflict through its ambassador in Kabul and if needed willing to take up any responsibility in this regard.

While speaking about the Middle East crisis, Ihsanoglu condemned the approval given by the Israeli occupation authorities for the construction of 130 new settlement units in the Gilo Settlement in East Jerusalem. He also blasted the Quartet for its complete failure.

Ihsanoglu deplored the bill declaring Al-Quds a capital of Israel and of the Jewish people, calling it a direct aggression against the Palestinian people and their inalienable rights.

While addressing a press conference, the OIC chief highlighted the achievements of the group in 2011 and called it very satisfying. He touched upon many issues arising from the Arab Spring and what it means to the region. He also focused on Muslim-West relations, economic development and progress in science and technology in the Muslim world and the projects and initiatives undertaken by the OIC on these issues.

Ihsanoglu disclosed that an initiative was taken by the OIC to achieve national reconciliation in Somalia besides its humanitarian efforts launched early August.

We achieved many milestones in 2011. For example, we were able to agree on changing the name and new charter of the group after 40 years. We were the first to react to Libyan crisis. When the uprising took place in Benghazi on Feb. 17 and in just five days on Feb. 21, the OIC gave its support to the legitimate aspirations of the Libyans.

On humanitarian front, the OIC chief said the group has sent a mission to Mindanao in the Philippines in the wake of last months devastating storm. It also raised a considerable amount of money to help flood victims in Pakistan and drought-hit Somalia.

Ihsanoglu highlighted the efforts made by the OIC in alleviating the suffering of the victims of Sendong in the cities of Caganyan De Oro and Illigan where close to 3,500 families (approximately 21,000 people) received food and non food items through the OIC in cooperation with the relevant governmental authorities.

On the domestic front, Ihsanoglu lauded the role of Saudi Arabia and noted that Custodian of the Two Holly Mosques King Abdullah has donated a plot of land for the construction of a new OIC headquarters, adding that the OIC is waiting for the royal decree to start construction soon.

Identification of pyrimethamine- and chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum in Africa between 1984 and 1998: genotyping of archive blood samples

??Identification of pyrimethamine- and chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum in Africa between 1984 and 1998: genotyping of archive blood samples

Understanding the geographical distribution of drug resistance of Plasmodium falciparum is important for the effective treatment of malaria. Drug resistance has previously been inferred mainly from records of clinical resistance.

However, clinical resistance is not always consistent with the parasite's genetic resistance. Thus, molecular identification of the parasite's drug resistance is required.

In Africa, clinical resistance to pyrimethamine (Pyr) and chloroquine (CQ) was evident before 1980 but few studies investigating the genetic resistance to these drugs were conducted before the late 1990s. In this study, genotyping of genes involved in resistance to Pyr and CQ was performed using archive blood samples from Africa between 1984 and 1998.

Methods: Parasite DNA was extracted from P.

falciparum-infected blood smears collected from travellers returning to Japan from Africa between 1984 and 1998. Genotypes of the dihydrofolate reductase gene (dhfr) and CQ-resistance transporter gene (pfcrt) were determined by polymerase chain reaction amplification and sequencing.

Results: Genotyping of dhfr and pfcrt was successful in 59 and 80 samples, respectively.

One wild-type and seven mutant dhfr genotypes were identified. Three dhfr genotypes lacking the S108N mutation (NRSI, ICSI, IRSI; amino acids at positions 51, 59, 108, and 164 with mutations underlined) were highly prevalent before 1994 but reduced after 1995, accompanied by an increase in genotypes with the S108N mutation.

The dhfr IRNI genotype was first identified in Nigeria in 1991 in the present samples, and its frequency gradually increased. However, two double mutants (ICNI and NRNI), the latter of which was exclusively found in West Africa, were more frequent than the IRNI genotype.

Only two pfcrt genotypes were found, the wild-type and a Southeast Asian type (CVIET; amino acids at positions 72-76 with mutations underlined). The CVIET genotype was already present as early as 1984 in Tanzania and Nigeria, and appeared throughout Africa between 1984 and 1998.

Conclusions: This study is the first to report the molecular identification of Pyr- and CQ-resistant genotypes of P.

falciparum in Africa before 1990. Genotyping of dhfr and pfcrt using archive samples has revealed new aspects of the evolutionary history of Pyr- and CQ-resistant parasites in Africa.

For stock market in 2011, the world was flat

Stock market, as measured by the S&P 500, ends the year just as it started. But stock market in fourth quarter staged an impressive rally, which could set the tone for 2012. ?

The stock market ended a tumultuous year right where it started.

In the final tally, despite big climbs and falls, unexpected blows and surprising triumphs, all the hullabaloo proved for naught. On Friday, the Standard & Poor's 500 index closed at 1,257.60. That's exactly 0.04 point below where it started the year.

"If you fell asleep January 1 and woke up today, you'd think nothing had happened," says Jack Ablin, chief investment officer of Harris Private Bank. "But it's been up and down all year. It's been crazy."

It was a year when U.S. companies were supposed to run out of ways to make big profits. But they didn't, and in fact generated more than ever. It was a year when the U.S. lost its prized triple-A credit rating, which should have spooked buyers of its bonds. Instead investors bought more of them and made Treasurys one of the best bets of 2011. It was a year when stocks caught fire, then collapsed to near bear-market lows.

Among stocks, there were some surprising winners. Scaredy-cat investors who bought the most conservative and dullest of stocks ? utilities ? gained 15 percent this year, the biggest price rise of the ten industry sectors in the S&P 500. Other winning groups were consumer staples, up 11 percent, and health care companies, 10 percent.

Other market curiosities:

? Bad year, great quarter. Despite disappointing returns in 2011, the last three months of the year were impressive, which could bode well for the new year. The S&P 500 rose 11 percent. The Dow Jones industrial average, comprising 30 big stocks, climbed 1,344 points, or 12 percent. That was the largest quarterly point gain in its history. The Dow closed up 5.5 percent for the year.

? Best of the bad. U.S. stocks delivered little this year, but other markets did even worse, including ones in fast-growing economies. Brazil's Bovespa index fell 18 percent in 2011. Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 20 percent. In Europe, many of the biggest markets ended down in 2011. Britain's FTSE 100 lost 5.6 percent, Germany's DAX 14.7 percent.

? Buy American is back. A broad index of the Treasury market gained 9.6 percent, despite the fact that the U.S. government is now slightly less likely to repay its debt, at least according to Standard & Poor's. In August, the rating agency stripped the U.S. of its triple-A rating, citing mounting U.S. debt and political squabbling over what to do about it.

For stock investors, 2011 wasn't supposed to end this way.

At the start of the year, the Great Recession was officially 1? years behind us and the recovery was finally gaining momentum. The economy added an average of more than 200,000 jobs a month in February, March and April. And U.S. companies kept reporting big jumps in profits, defying naysayers.

The stock market roared in approval. On April 29, the S&P closed at 1,363, double its recessionary low of March 2009.

Then manufacturing slowed, companies stopped hiring and consumer confidence plummeted, taking with it those hopes of big stock gains for the year. Adding to the misery, Japan was rocked by an earthquake and tsunami. That shut down factories run by crucial parts suppliers to U.S. firms, in particular auto makers.

Gridlock in Washington didn't help. After much squabbling, politicians eventually decided to raise the cap on how much the federal government can borrow in early August. But the heated debate took its toll. The Dow Jones industrial average swung more than 400 points four days in a row ? down and up and down and up.

Overhanging it all was fear that the debt crisis in Greece had spread to Italy and Spain, countries too large for other European nations to bail out.

Talk of another blockbuster year for stocks turned to dark musings about the possibility of another U.S. recession. And so stocks kept falling. On Oct. 3, stocks had dropped 19 percent from their April high. That was just one point short of an official bear market.
