IE11 Gives Microsoft A Shot At Browser Redemption

ie-logoInternet Explorer is a hard product to love. It was so bad for so long and Microsoft abused its position of having the dominant browser for so many years that even today, with a few solid releases under its belt, IE still feels like the browser you should hate. But with IE11, which just launched with the Windows 8.1 Preview, Microsoft is finally stepping up its game to the point where there's a reason to take IE seriously again. And it deserves another look from both developers and users.

Netflix Max hands-on: Jellyvision's take on your movie queue

Netflix Max handson Jellyvision's take on your movie queue

Being a Netflix subscriber is almost like being cursed -- sure, you have access to untold troves of streaming TV shows and films, but how do you choose what to watch? The burden of choice weighs heavily on the indecisive Netflix user, trapping them in a labyrinth of enticing categories, familiar recommendations and episode backlogs. Admit it, you don't know jack about picking out a good flick, which is exactly why Netflix created Max, a comedic recommendation engine that gamifies movie night with quick choices, mini games and quirky humor.

Netflix Vice President of Product Innovation Todd Yellin caught up with us at E3 earlier this month to give us a brief demo of the upcoming feature. Yellin parked us in front of a PS3 to demonstrate, pointing out that our screen's topmost category had been replaced by a larger banner. "My mother wanted me to be a lawyer," the Play Max prompt reads. "But my dream is to help you find great stuff to watch." Quirky. Yellin tells us that this is one of several boiler plates the streaming menu provides to lure users into trying Max. A cheeky button beneath the dialogue encourage us to "live our dreams" and give the content recommendation game a spin. Sure, why not?

Third man arrested in case involving ex-NFL player

BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) ? A man arrested in Connecticut in connection with the murder case against former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was being sent to Massachusetts on Friday, and investigators said a third suspect was arrested in south Florida.

Massachusetts State Police said local officers in Miramar, Fla., captured Ernest Wallace early Friday afternoon, hours after a Connecticut judge ordered Carlos Ortiz turned over to Massachusetts authorities.

New Britain State's attorney said investigators arrested the 27-year-old Ortiz in Bristol on Wednesday as part of the inquiry into the slaying of Boston semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd.

Hernandez is charged with murder in the slaying of Lloyd near Hernandez's home in North Attleborough, Mass. He has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail.

Ortiz was charged in Connecticut as a fugitive from justice. His public defender, Alfonzo Sirica, declined to comment about the case.

Also Friday, Massachusetts authorities said officers had recovered a car linked to Wallace.

Authorities revealed Thursday night that they were seeking Wallace, who they said should be considered armed and dangerous, on a charge of acting as an accessory after Lloyd's murder.

Police arrested Hernandez on Wednesday at his Massachusetts mansion and charged the 23-year-old with orchestrating Lloyd's execution-style shooting, allegedly because the victim had talked to the wrong people at a nightclub.

A judge denied Hernandez' bail appeal Thursday in a Massachusetts courtroom, where a prosecutor said a Hummer belonging to Hernandez turned up an ammunition clip matching the caliber of casings found at the scene of Lloyd's killing.

Hernandez's lawyer argued his client is not a risk to flee and the case against him is circumstantial.

On June 16, the night before the slaying, a prosecutor said, Hernandez texted two unidentified friends and asked them to hurry to Massachusetts from Connecticut.

A few minutes later, he texted Lloyd to tell him he wanted to get together, the prosecutor said. Authorities say the three picked up Lloyd at around 2:30 a.m. June 17, drove him to an industrial park near Hernandez's home and shot him five times. They have not said who fired the shots.

Meanwhile, Lloyd's relatives were preparing for his funeral in Boston on Saturday. A relative said the service will be at Church of the Holy Spirit in the city's Mattapan section.

At Ortiz's court hearing in Bristol on Friday, there was no mention of any other allegations against him, no reference to Hernandez and no discussion of Lloyd's homicide. It remained unclear if Ortiz was one of the two friends whom authorities say were with Hernandez when Lloyd was shot to death.

A friend and a relative of Ortiz said outside the courthouse that they were surprised by his arrest. They said Ortiz is the devoted father of two girls and a boy, all under the age of 9. Ortiz was unemployed recently, but previously worked a long time at a Savers clothing store, they said.

They also said they couldn't believe Ortiz could be part of a murder.

"He's not that type of person. He has a good heart," said friend Milton Montesdeoca, 24, of Bristol, who added he didn't know Hernandez and never heard Ortiz talk about the football star.

The Patriots, who cut Hernandez following his arrest, drafted him in 2010 and signed him last summer to a five-year contract worth $40 million.

He could face life in prison if convicted.

Mayor Vincent C. Gray Announces the Winning Bid for ... - ART(202)

dc_OneCity

Mayor Vincent C. Gray is pleased to join with the Deputy Mayor For Planning and Economic Development (DMPED), DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) and the Department of General Services (DGS) in announcing the selection of I.M.P., owners of the 9:30 Club, as the winning bid to become the new operator for the Historic Lincoln Theatre, beginning September 2013. ?The selection of the new operator highlights Mayor Gray?s commitment to a long-term sustainable business plan for the theatre, as well as the city?s efforts to revitalize one of the District of Columbia?s most important and historic cultural landmarks.

I.M.P. demonstrates a proven track record of successfully operating and managing cultural facilities throughout the Washington Metropolitan Area and represents a strong brand of excellence.? I.M.P. possesses the experienced leadership necessary to build and sustain a consistent artistic identity for the Lincoln Theatre. ?Currently, I.M.P. operates the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland and produces concerts in various venues of all sizes throughout the region.

?I applaud the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and the Department of General Services for moving this process forward,? said Mayor Gray. ?I?m delighted that we can now move forward with I.M.P. and begin revitalizing this immense cultural asset.?

The process of selecting an operator began in January 2012 when Mayor Vincent C. Gray granted oversight of the Lincoln Theatre to the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH). The DCCAH?s primary role was to continue operating the theatre while developing a sustainable long-term business strategy for the theater. The District evaluated the Letters of Intent based upon the economic terms, vision and business model. A shortlist of Offerors was selected to submit detailed backup information as a second round of evaluations. ?From there, a selection panel of representatives from District government agencies, the local arts community, and Ward One convened to evaluate the short-listed candidates.

?This selection raises the bar for arts and entertainment in Washington,? said Judith Terra, Chair of the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities. ?As we move toward becoming the cultural capital of the United States, our cultural assets that draw residents and visitors to our neighborhoods continue to define the greatness of our city.?

?The Historic Lincoln Theatre has been a cultural landmark in Washington for more than 90 years, and will continue to provide high quality artistic excellence for our residents and visitors,? said Lionell Thomas, Executive Director of the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities. ?The new vision for the theater represents the growing diversity of our city.?

?The Department of General Services is very pleased with the outcome of this process that will bring this historic jewel back to life,? said Brian J. Hanlon, DGS Director. ?This was a collaborative effort that resulted in selecting a very strong, long-term operator for the Lincoln Theatre.?

?It?s an honor and a thrill to be entrusted with bringing new life to such a wonderful old theatre,? said Seth Hurwitz, chairman of I.M.P. ?Who doesn?t love places like this? You walk into it and gasp every time. To be able to make this more a part of people?s lives here again is an opportunity that is truly a privilege.?There are so many kinds of shows that we are not able to do at 9:30 Club that we will now have a place for, including many that we had to take out of the city.? Although we have been doing this for 33 years, we have added very few venues in our family roster. But this one we couldn?t pass up. The Lincoln is just too cool not to do.?

One Simple Hook to Solve a Million Problems

One Simple Hook to Solve a Million Problems

You know that phrase "don't mess with a good thing?" Sometimes you come across a product that's so simple, and so-self evident about it that it's perfect. I feel that way about the Unihook by designer Pat Kim.

So, sure, it's just a hook made from stainless steel you hang your belongings from. But it's strong, it doesn't need a stud, and it just looks nice. Look at that little splash of color it has. Plus, hooks are handy! You probably use them for your wet towels, your umbrellas, your bathrobes, your jewelry, and a bunch of other stuff it's not polite to mention in public.

The Unihook site doesn't list a price, but for ordering information email info@patkimdesign.com. If it weren't for simple organizational tools like this, some of us would probably lose our minds. [Pat Kim Design]

Status of the states on same-sex marriage

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

FILE - Christian Olivera, of Newark, N.J., shouts toward the Statehouse in Trenton, N.J. on Thursday, June 27, 2013 as he and other advocates for gay marriage in New Jersey gather, saying they'll press their case in the legislature and the courts after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that invalidates parts of the federal Defense of Marriage Act. Gov. Chris Christie said he would again veto a same-sex marriage bill if it reaches his desk, and that Wednesday's U.S. Supreme Court ruling striking down a ban on federal benefits for same-sex married couples will have no effect on New Jersey, one of a handful of states that allows civil unions. (AP Photo/Mel Evans)The Supreme Court issued a pair of decisions this week with major consequences for efforts to legalize or bar same-sex marriage. One ruling opened the way for California to become the 13th state to allow gay marriage; the other struck down part of the federal Defense of Marriage Act and directed the government to recognize legally married same-sex couples.

Boomerang Android app tames Gmail inboxes with reminders

DNP Boomerang Gmail app comes to Android, available now

The previously web-only Boomerang app for Gmail is now in open beta on Android. Just another mail app, right? Not quite -- Boomerang's hook is that it can bring unanswered messages back to your inbox. More than a clever reminder system, the app uses gesture controls (swipe right to archive, left for snooze and other options) and can schedule outgoing emails, too. According to TechCrunch, developer Baydin is also working on support for non-Gmail services and a tablet-optimized app. Jump to the Google Play link below to get your hands dirty for free.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 Google Play edition hands-on (video)

Samsung Galaxy S 4 Google Play edition handson video

It's probably not a huge stretch to say that Samsung's Galaxy S 4 running stock Android was the biggest surprise to come out of Google I/O last month. The handset -- officially called Samsung Galaxy S 4 Google Play edition -- is now on sale in the Play store for $649 alongside a special version of the HTC One. Spec-wise, the phone is identical to AT&T's 16GB model and supports the same bands (including LTE). It's powered by Qualcomm's 1.9GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor with 2GB or RAM and features a 5-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display, 13-megapixel camera with flash, removable 2600mAh Li-ion battery and microSD expansion. While we briefly handled the phone at I/O, it wasn't until yesterday that we got to spend some quality time with it. Hit the break for our first impressions and hands-on video.

Obama sees a hopeful democratic example in Senegal

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) ? The hopeful story President Barack Obama wants to tell about Africa is represented in the first stop of his weeklong trip to re-engage the continent, in a country where democracy recently overcame an impending electoral crisis.

During his visit to Senegal on Thursday, Obama also will reflect on the ties many African-Americans share with the continent as he takes a tour of Goree Island, Africa's westernmost point. Africans reportedly were shipped off into slavery across the Atlantic Ocean through the island's "Door of No Return."

Thousands of boisterous revelers welcomed Obama's motorcade Thursday morning in Dakar, cheering and waving homemade signs as the first African-American president made his way to the presidential palace for his meeting with President Macky Sall. A large sign outside his hotel gate had pictures of smiling Obama and Sall that read, "Welcome home, President Obama. We wish you a good stay."

Some in the crowd drummed, danced and sang, and many wore white as a symbol for peace. Sall and his wife, Marieme Faye Sall, greeted Obama and first lady Michelle Obama before entering the palace for a bilateral meeting between the two presidents.

Obama and Sall were scheduled to hold a press conference before ferrying to Goree Island for his tour.

It's the first of two island visits where Obama planned to highlight racial atrocities of the past. The second was scheduled for Sunday at South Africa's Robben Island, where anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years.

But Mandela's condition could affect Obama's plans. The former South African president is gravely ill, and Obama foreign policy adviser Ben Rhodes said it would be left to the Mandela family to decide whether he is up for a visit from Obama this weekend.

Mandela's legacy hangs over the entire trip, with Senegal among many African countries that have benefited from his example of a peaceful transition to power. "So much of the democratic progress that we see across the continent I think can be tied in some way to the inspiration that Nelson Mandela set," Rhodes said.

Obama's focus in Senegal will be on the modern-day achievements of the former French colony after half a century of independence. Sall ousted an incumbent president who attempted to change the constitution to make it easier for him to be re-elected and pave the way for his son to succeed him. The power grab sparked protests, fueled by hip-hop music and social media, that led to Sall's election.

But such people-powered democratic transitions are not always the story of the African experience. Fighting and human rights abuses limited Obama's options for stops in his first major tour of sub-Saharan Africa since he took office more than four years ago. Obama is avoiding his father's homeland, Kenya, whose president has been charged with war crimes, and Nigeria, the country with the continent's most dominant economy. Nigeria is enveloped in an Islamist insurgency and military crackdown.

Obama's itinerary in Senegal was designed to send a message, purposefully delivered in a French-speaking, Muslim-majority nation, to other Africans in countries that have not made the strides toward democracy that Senegal has. Obama plans to meet with civil society leaders at the Goree Institute and visit the Supreme Court to speak about the importance of an independent judiciary and the rule of law in Africa's development.

"It's not enough to have elections, it's not enough to have democratically elected leaders," Rhodes said. "You need to have independent judiciaries. You need to have confidence in the rule of law. You need to have efforts to combat corruption. Because, frankly, not only is that good for democracy and respect for human rights, but it's critical to Africa's economic growth, because where you have clear rules of the road and efforts to combat corruption, businesses will invest, and jobs will be created and growth will take off. And that's what we want to see."

South Africa: Mandela family gathers at rural home

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Members of Nelson Mandela's family and tribal elders gathered Tuesday at the former president's rural hometown in eastern South Africa, as concern grew for the 94-year-old leader who spent a third day in critical condition in a hospital, local media reported.

The office of President Jacob Zuma said Mandela's condition remained unchanged after reporting late Sunday that his health had deteriorated to critical, alarming many South Africans as well as people around the world who regard the former president as a symbol of sacrifice and reconciliation.

Mandela's family members held a meeting at his home in Qunu village in the Eastern Cape province, 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) south of Johannesburg, where the anti-apartheid leader grew up. No details on what was discussed in the meeting were announced. Those at the gathering included Mandela's grandsons Mandla and Ndaba Mandela, according to press reports.

The Mail & Guardian, a South African newspaper, reported on its website that some elders in the area were only told of the meeting shortly before it started.

"Many of us in the village were not aware and we were only told this morning, so a number of Mandela elders still need to be transported to Qunu for the meeting," the newspaper quoted Silumko Mandela, a relative, as saying earlier in the day.

A military helicopter was also seen hovering over the Mandela home, reported the online edition of City Press, a South African newspaper.

As on previous days, other family members were seen visiting the hospital in Pretoria where the Nobel Peace Prize laureate is being treated. South Africa's defense minister and an Anglican archbishop also visited the facility.

Dozens of doves were released on Tuesday outside the hospital, which has attracted well-wishers who have gathered outside to leave messages of support for Mandela.

"In terms of releasing these doves, we're simply saying it symbolizes how he has set free us as South Africans," said Kelvin Hugo, who arrived with the birds. "He set us free in the capacity not only of social freedom or economic freedom but he's given us an opportunity to have freedom of speech, freedom of movement, freedom of association."

Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison during white racist rule and became South Africa's first black president in all-race elections in 1994, was taken to the hospital on June 8 to be treated for what the government described as a recurring lung infection. Zuma's office said doctors were doing their best to ensure his recovery and comfort.

"We must support him and support his family," Zuma said in a statement. "We must demonstrate our love and appreciation for his leadership during the struggle for liberation and in our first few years of freedom and democracy by living out his legacy and promoting unity, non-racialism, non-sexism and prosperity in our country."

The president asked that the legacy of Mandela, also known by his clan name Madiba, be celebrated on July 18, his 95th birthday. In recent years, organizers have sought to turn the day into an international event in which participants do something to honor Mandela's values for 67 minutes, noting that he spent 67 years as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner, a peacemaker and a democratically elected president.

"We must all be planning what to do next month in marking our 67 minutes of doing good for humanity as called upon by Madiba to do so, when he launched the International Mandela Day campaign," Zuma said. "Let us make it the biggest Mandela Day ever on the 18th of July, focusing on doing good all over the country."

South Africa's foreign minister, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, said people should honor Mandela but not dwell excessively on his illness.

"We continue to wish the father of our nation well," she said. "We are realistic about his age. We are also consciously aware of the fact that the doctors are saying he remains critical. But I am sure he would be very disappointed, if he hears that because he's very sick, life has stopped in South Africa."

Democratic Rep. Markey tops Republican in Massachusetts Senate race

By Scott Malone

BOSTON (Reuters) - Veteran Representative Edward Markey of Massachusetts on Tuesday won the U.S. Senate seat vacated by John Kerry and helped Democrats maintain their majority in the chamber.

Markey, 66, claimed victory in a post on his official campaign Twitter page, saying: "Thank you Massachusetts! I am deeply honored for the opportunity to serve you in the United States Senate."

Local cable news station NECN said Markey secured 55 percent of the vote with 99 percent of districts reporting.

Markey, who has been vocal on climate issues, said he would push for more investment in alternative energy sources.

"I want to lead the effort to launch a clean energy revolution in our country," Markey told supporters in Boston. "We can combat climate change, break our dependence on imported oil and create jobs here in Massachusetts and across our country."

The win caps a campaign that Markey began in December, shortly after President Barack Obama said he wanted to appoint Kerry U.S. Secretary of State.

In a statement, Obama said Markey has "earned a reputation as an effective, creative legislator, willing to partner with colleagues across the aisle to make progress on the issues that matter most. The people of Massachusetts can be proud that they have another strong leader fighting for them in the Senate, and people across the country will benefit from Ed's talent and integrity."

Markey ran an aggressive campaign, painting Gomez, a private equity executive and former Navy SEAL, as out of touch with Massachusetts voters.

Gomez, the son of Colombian immigrants and a graduate of Harvard Business School, polled well among Republicans. But that support was not enough to win a majority of voters in the heavily liberal state.

Democrats also remembered the lessons of three years ago, when little-known Republican lawmaker Scott Brown won a special election to fill the late Democrat Edward Kennedy's U.S. Senate seat.

Obama and former President Bill Clinton traveled to Massachusetts this month to campaign for Markey, who lead in polls throughout the primary and general election campaigns.

Conceding defeat, Gomez told supporters: "In the military you learn one thing ... not every fight's a fair fight. We were massively overspent. ... But in the face of this great adversity we could not have fought a better fight."

Republican political strategist Eric Fehrnstrom said Gomez could be "a battle-tested GOP candidate for statewide office in 2014" when Massachusetts voters will choose a new governor.

Markey, who will have to defend his Senate seat in November 2014, was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1976.

Democrats have a 54-46 majority over Republicans in the U.S. Senate.

Apps pinpoint locations of nearby concerts for music lovers

By Natasha Baker

(Reuters) - Music lovers looking for a nearby concert can turn to apps that detect a person's location and list nearby live events based on the type of tunes they and their friends like.

Apps such as Bandsintown and Songkick scan fans' music libraries on their mobile devices and iTunes, along with music streaming services such as Spotify, Pandora and SoundCloud, to learn musical preferences so fans never miss a show.

Bandsintown also shows users which bands their friends are heading to see.

"There are two reasons why someone might go to a concert. The first is that they like a particular style of music or the artist. The second is that it's a social event with friends," said Julien Mitelberg, the CEO of New-York based Bandsintown.

The app makes recommendations for concerts nearby and notifies users when friends indicate they are going to see a show. Users can also invite friends using the app, which is available worldwide for iPhone and Android.

Songkick, which is available worldwide for iPhone and Android, gathers information from ticket vendors, websites and newspapers to compile its database of concerts.

An app from music streaming service Rhapsody, called Rhapsody Concerts, shows upcoming concerts nearby and lets users stream a band's albums before deciding whether to buy tickets.

"Our customers like to go see live music. But there weren't really any services out there that combined an unlimited catalog of songs with live music discovery," said Paul Springer, senior vice president of product at Rhapsody International, which is based in Seattle.

Thrillcall, which started four years ago, lets users buy tickets for any concert in every major city from their iPhone and Android apps.

The company also introduced exclusive offers in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and San Francisco that allow fans to meet the band, bypass lines and buy VIP tickets and merchandise.

Matthew Tomaszewicz, co-founder of Thrillcall, said one of the main benefits of the app is that users can buy tickets to shows in two clicks on the app.

About 100,000 concerts are available in the app at any time.

AT&T cuts smartphone prices in half, jumps on the discount bandwagon

AT&T cuts smartphone prices in half, jumps on the discount bandwagon

If you're looking for a new smartphone, this is apparently the weekend to go shopping. Following Radio Shack's promise to chip in a $100 Google Play credit with purchase an HTC One and Walmart's deep iPhone discounts, AT&T has quietly tacked on a 50% discount to all smartphone purchases under $199. This puts devices like the HTC One, Samsung's Galaxy S4 (and the S4 Active), the Note II, both of BlackBerry's latest handsets and iPhone 5 at an enticing $100. Naturally, Ma Bell has attached the usual hooks: the deal necessitates a new 2-year agreement or contract renewal, and in-store purchases require a trade-in device to activate the discount. Not a bad deal if you're hankering for new hardware -- just make sure you don't walk away with buyer's remorse.
