His only crime is that he hasn?t waded through the years of paperwork and processing in order to obtain legal citizenship in the U.S. What about a friend who gets pulled over and asked for immigration papers or proof of citizenship solely because of her skin color? These are the questions Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank is asking, as he fires yet another salvo in the ever increasing debate over illegal immigration in the state of Utah.

Burbank, whose infamously lenient take on illegal immigration has earned him the nickname ?Sanctuary Burbank,? from opponents, said that the current proposed ?solutions? for illegal immigration in Utah represent a serious threat to the civil liberties of U.S. citizens and could actually increase the crime rate of Utah should they be enacted.

?These are ridiculous laws,? Burbank said of proposed immigration laws similar to those passed in Arizona.

Arizona?s SB 1070 require police officers to actively check immigration status during legal stops, and require all aliens, legal or otherwise, to carry proper documentation of their citizenship at all times. Failure to do so could result in a misdemeanor charge.

?Any time we as a society can say one segment of our population?because of who they are, what they look like, the language they speak?is more engaged in criminal behavior [as a result]. Well that?s as racist and biased as anything I?ve ever heard,? Burbank said.

Burbank said that he believes by creating laws that target illegal immigrants, Utah will create significant problems for the community on two levels?crime increase, and the all too slippery slope of racial profiling.

?You actually increase crime when you enforce these kinds of laws,? Burbank said.

He cited the formation of the Italian Mafia as an example of racially specific profiling leading to increased crime, saying that due to the shunning of the Italian people on the East Coast, they began to look to each other for support and eventually turned to crime as an alternative to pursuing legal jobs outside of their own community.

One of Burbank?s main concerns with the proposed laws, is that the threatened deportation of illegal immigrants increases the likelihood those immigrants won?t feel comfortable reporting crimes to the police for fear of calling deportation down on themselves.

?When we have a segment of society that turns their back or says ?We?re not going to interact with the police,?? Burbank said. ?Well, the criminal element thrives.?

The other great threat Burbank believes these laws represent is that of selective racial profiling.

?We are a very effective form of oppression,? Burbank said of the dangers associated with racial profiling. ?Those things [profiling] are wrong and it?s my job to prevent that from happening in my profession. I will not allow my officers to be involved in that behavior.?

Burbank isn?t the only one interested in seeing Utah?s illegal immigration status solved through non-aggressive legislation. State Rep. Rebecca Edwards, R-North Salt Lake, also stated concerns similar to Burbank?s regarding an increase in crime, should these laws be enacted.

?I think that [Burbank?s view] is probably true,? Edwards said. ?I?ve talked to people in law enforcement who believe that it [immigration laws] would drive people who might report crime underground.?

Not only did Edwards express concerns regarding a possible increase in crime, but also the potentially disastrous effect such laws could have on Utah?s economy, citing the numerous illegal immigrants who help maintain Utah?s farmland.

?They [immigration laws] in the end are not realistic because of the devastation to the economy and tearing families apart,? Edwards said. ?If people are going to be here anyway, let?s help them to be responsible.?

Of course not everyone is satisfied with Utah?s current policies on illegal immigration such as HB116, which passed last year, allowing illegal immigrants who fulfill certain requirements to obtain jobs and in-state tuition at Utah?s public colleges and universities.

State Rep. Chris Herrod, R-Provo, is particularly adamant about the problems that illegal immigration is causing for those waiting to immigrate to the U.S. legally.

?By us tolerating illegal immigration, we are hurting those who are waiting up to 20 years for legal immigration,? Herrod said. ?Where is the compassion for those who are waiting in line? Nobody is talking about those individuals.?

Herrod, who has a number of legal immigrants in his family, including his wife, a native of Russia, supports the proposed laws that would crack down on illegal immigration. He believes that by acting as what he calls a ?sanctuary state,? Utah is hurting legal immigrants as much as, if not more than, the illegals who come into the state.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Lindsay Lohan returns to court Thursday for a hearing that could give the actress back something she hasn't had for nearly two years: true freedom.

Lohan will give a judge her final update on strict probation requirements that have had her doing cleanup duty at the county morgue and attending regular psychotherapy sessions since late last year. Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner has said she will end Lohan's probation on a 2007 drunken driving case on Thursday if she completes the requirements, which the actress has apparently done.

The "Mean Girls" star will remain on informal probation for taking a necklace without permission, but she will no longer be supervised by a probation officer and judge and no longer be forced to live in Los Angeles, where the actress still faces civil lawsuits over accidents and her bad behavior.

The hearing comes as Lohan's career is showing hints of a comeback. She is due to guest star on an upcoming episode of "Glee," recently hosted a highly rated but criticized episode of "Saturday Night Live" and is set to star as Elizabeth Taylor in a television movie.

"Lindsay is ending one chapter and starting the next," her spokesman, Steve Honig said. "She is very eager to get back on set and dive into her next few projects."

Roles have been hard to come by for Lohan in recent years as she has been in-and-out of courtrooms, admitted to rehab and sentenced to jail. Her failure to complete alcohol education classes in 2010 prompted a judge to sentence her to jail for the first time since the actress served 84 minutes for a pair of drunken driving arrests in 2007. A court-ordered rehab stint was cut short, but Lohan relapsed before year's end and was sent by another judge to the Betty Ford Center, where she was involved in a fight with a rehab worker.

Within three weeks of her release in January 2011, Lohan was accused of stealing a $2,500 necklace from a store near her Venice home and soon landed in Sautner's court. The judge rejected rehab, but did attempt to send Lohan, 25, to jail as punishment. Overcrowding reduced a November 2011 sentence to a few hours, although the actress did serve 35 days on house arrest earlier in the year.

Lohan is far from the only celebrity to encounter trouble complying with the terms of alcohol-related cases and ending up in jail. Fellow female celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie and Khloe Kardashian have all been sentenced to jail and faced multiple court hearings because they didn't properly comply with their sentences. All their cases have long since ended.

Lohan's tortured four-and-a-half-year journey to complete her case is not entirely unprecedented. Actress Michelle Rodriguez took just over five years to resolve her drunken driving case, which featured many of the same elements as the Lohan saga: extensions, missed deadlines and jail sentences.

Resolving the case will provide the actress with the chance for something Hollywood has bestowed to plenty of other fallen stars: a comeback.

Her career prospects are largely tied to her ability to stay out of trouble, which at times has been a tough task for the actress. Two weeks before her hearing, a nightclub manager in Hollywood accused Lohan of grazing him with her Porsche. The actress denies the accusation and no charges have been filed, but the matter may end up in a civil court, where Lohan is already being sued by two other people for auto-related incidents.

Three men who were in a car that Lohan commandeered and used for a chase along Pacific Coast Highway ? leading to her second drunken driving arrest in 2007 ? are suing her and the case is scheduled for trial later this year. Lohan is also being sued by a woman who claims she was struck by the star's car while walking in West Hollywood.

She is also being sued by the former Betty Ford worker.

Whether the cases will result in the end of her off-screen drama remains to be seen.

Before all that, there is one last hurdle, albeit a familiar one. She must make it past the rows of cameras Thursday morning to Sautner's reporter-packed courtroom.

From miniature elephants to monster mice, and even Hobbit-sized humans, size changes in island animals are well-known to science. Biologists have long believed that large animals evolving on islands tend to get smaller, while small animals tend to get bigger, a generalization they call "the island rule."

A new study by researchers at Duke University and the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center in Durham, NC puts that old idea to the test in island and mainland rodents.

"Some of the size changes observed in island animals are pretty dramatic," said Paul Durst, a doctoral student at Duke and the lead author of a study appearing in the April issue of the American Naturalist. The fossil remains of dwarf elephants found on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, for example, suggest that they shrunk by more than 90 percent over evolutionary time. Island giants are impressive too -- an extinct group of West Indian rodents known as giant hutias are estimated to have weighed up to 440 pounds, or as much as an American black bear.

But some animals still prove a puzzle. "Large animals like elephants and deer have a pretty consistent pattern. They all tend to get small. But it's more complicated for other animals such as rodents," Durst said.

Over the years, a number of scientists have questioned the generality of the island rule, arguing that size trends on islands aren't as consistent as originally thought. Researchers have proposed a number of hypotheses to explain why some island animals get big and others get small, but no single variable explains them all.

Size changes in island animals are likely determined by multiple factors, researchers say. Durst and co-author Louise Roth, a professor of biology and evolutionary anthropology at Duke, wanted to understand just what those factors are, and which ones are most important. So they focused their analyses on rodents, a group of animals for which the patterns are far from clear.

The researchers compiled data for 73 species of rodents on 55 islands across the world, ranging in size from the tiny 0.2 ounce Eurasian harvest mouse on the South Korean island of Cheju to the 45-pound North American beaver on Vancouver Island.

"Some rodent species get bigger on islands, and others get smaller," Durst explained. Coues' rice rat on the Mexican island of Cozumel, for example, has grown to more than twice the size of its mainland counterparts, whereas Finlayson's squirrel on the Thai island of Ko Lan has shrunk by half.

Using a method called classification tree analysis, Durst and Roth measured the importance of several factors, including natural history, habitat and interactions with other species. In addition to size, they looked to see whether something else about the species in question -- such as its diet -- might explain why some species of rodent get big and others get small. They also asked whether something about the island itself -- such as how big the island is, or how far from the mainland, or how many species call it home -- explains why some islands breed giants and others breed dwarfs.

Previous studies have tested some of these factors in isolation, but this study is one of the first to measure the relative importance of multiple factors simultaneously.

The key factor in determining which rodents got bigger and which got smaller, they found, is original size on the mainland. Rodents above a cutoff size of 253 grams -- a group including beavers, groundhogs, squirrels and hamsters -- generally got smaller over time, whereas those that started out below 253 grams generally got bigger.

The original version of the island rule -- that small animals get big while big animals get small -- holds up within rodents. "Size is a good starting point," Durst said.

But size wasn't the only factor. Other features of the island itself, such as island area, precipitation and temperature also played minor roles. Figuring out why some factors are more important than others will take much more work, the researchers say. But the methods developed here could help scientists test additional factors in the future.

Plenty of uncertainty around. I live in the USA, and despair at the clearly inflationary policies. As such, I think that gold and silver will hold value during times of inflation far better than cash, stocks, or bonds.

The problem with certificates and savings accounts is that if things really go wrong, you are holding a piece of paper. There are downsides to owning physical gold, too, but I feel those are more addressable.

Drake has been cooped up inside for far too long, and now the Young Money standout is ready to breathe some fresh air into his Club Paradise Tour. On Thursday morning (March 22), Drizzy announced a 27-city amphitheater run that will begin on May 7 at the Sleep Train Pavilion in Concord, California.

"I feel like this tour is coming at the perfect time," Drake said in a press release issued to MTV News. "It's taking place in the season that we all wait for, we're outdoors and you've got every single artist you wait to hear in the club on one bill ... that's Club Paradise."

will ride out with Drake as an opening act, and Waka Flocka Flame, Meek Mill, 2 Chainz and French Montana will all support unspecified dates.

On the first leg of his tour, Mr. OVO sold out a string of U.S. college dates with Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky before taking the show across the pond to a number of European venues like London's O2 Arena and the Oslo Spektrum in Norway. This time out, the "Take Care" rapper will hit a number of outdoor venues like the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Aaron's Amphitheatre in Atlanta and the Jones Beach Theater in Long Island, New York. Drake will also rock the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, and the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee, before wrapping up the run at Boston's Comcast Center.

Tickets for the Club Paradise amphitheatre run will go on sale March 23 on Live Nation's website.

Cancer fighting game works in real life: study

"Re-Mission" is a video game in which the player controls a microscopic robot in the body of someone undergoing cancer therapy, to fight the disease and help off set the side effects of treatment. If the player is successful, the patient is cured, and now studies show the game can also help those afflicted in the real world.

As Kotaku points out, it's what is commonly referred to as a "serious game," which aims to illustrate real world issues in a virtual, and most importantly, interactive manner. Non-profit HopeLab developed?"Re-Mission? in 2006. It is aimed at those undergoing cancer treatment, to help better understand what is happening with their bodies:

A study conducted in 2008 confirmed the game's effectiveness: those who played "Re-Mission" were more likely to comply with treatment directives. A more recent study examined why, and according to the results, the act of playing works with parts of the brain responsible for motivation, more so than non-interactive methods of education.

According to Steve Cole, Ph.D., Vice President of Research and Development at HopeLab:

Active involvement in video game play sparks positive motivation in a way that watching and hearing information does not? All participants in the study received the same information. It was the active participation in gameplay that made the big difference in motivation. This study helps refine our 'recipe for success' in harnessing the power of play in the service of health.

Well, the evidence is mounting, and it looks like I may have let my eagerness for the possibility of self-propelled flight (of the Wii-sensored flapping variety) get in the way of reality. Yesterday, we covered Jarno Smeets, a.k.a. The Human BirdWings guy, supposedly taking off on self-built wings on a flight that he claimed spanned over 100 meters. However, the CGI experts are calling BS on the semi-self-propelled flight. And while this still doesn't prove it's a hoax directly -- in fact, Jamie Hyneman of MythBusters yesterday laid out an explanation of how it could be plausible using modern tech -- it sure isn't looking good for old Jarno.
